Customer Reviews

Not impressed with the video and SD issues, I like the audio quality and it is easy to use, but nothing else so far. This unit is almost useless because the video quality is so poor. The video quality is very bad inside so you will need extra lighting, and thought the audio quality is good, it only records in the MOV format. Since Quicktime is so dangerous to have on a computer you have to install codecs to play the files without Quicktime. And VLC fails to convert the files (for me anyway). So you are stuck with buying software to convert the files too unless you already have it. On top of that, you have to buy an SD card (it does not come with one) and you have to take the bottom of the unit off to remove the card (so if it is on a tripod, you have to remove it from the tripod first). They say you can plug the USB into your computer and record to that, but then you have to use batteries because there is only one USB, and it eats them fast. All around fail in my opinion. It is just too much work to get the recording off of the unit and onto your computer and converted. The bottom line is that it is just as easy to drag out my camcorder and tripod to make a video, than to run this unit. I will keep it for when I want to record something fast to see how it sounds or to remember how I played it. But I won't use it for much else. Too bad, I had hopped for more. 1"The Camera For Musicians" is the perfect thing to call the ZOOM Q2n. "The Camera For Musicians" is the perfect thing to call this. I am a professional musician and an audio engineer, I run a YouTube Channel called Garageband and Beyond based on Equipment reviews and Home Recording Tutorials and this little ZOOM thing is fantastic, especially for the price. If you're one of those musicians who wants to make good looking and good sounding recordings with the least amount of work, this is the camera for you. If you're looking to record you rehearsals and ONLY record the audio, it does that too. It's also a USB mic, a webcam capable of doing Facebook live and all the other live platforms as well. It's awesome and for $159 you cannot do any better, that is for sure. A++++++ ZOOM!!! Nice work! 5Great audio and video, poor USB plug quality, plug broke after 2 uses I have 3 of these cameras which I use to record seminars from multiple angles. This is a very lightweight and quality camera that produces good video and excellent audio.Pros:* Good video quality* Excellent audio quality* Many video/audio formats and resolutions* 6 different Field-of-View anglesCons:* Consumes new batteries in less than 40 minutes, needs power supply/battery pack over USB for serious use* Flimsy USB plug broke on one of the 3 cameras after three uses, despite very careful handling. Can't use without USB power (see above)The build quality is not 100%. Several reviews point to a problem with the USB port. Without USB power this camera can be used for only 30-40 minutes on brand new high capacity batteries, so once USB breaks you can't really use it. I'm waiting to see if they will provide a repair/replacement, since it is only 5 weeks from the purchase that this happened. 3Buy this, but understand... We Americans are a bit spoiled. How much we spend on our hobbies is sometimes not as important as the "simplicity" of what we buy. We LOVE one-stop, all-included, turn-key purchases! The Zoom Q2N is NOT one of these. Do not let this stop you. This Zoom Q2N is wonderful and compact device. You should buy it! BUT, you need to understand that Zoom marketing & sales have let us down big time. Here is why I say that and what you NEED to know. The TWO most important parts of the Zoom Q2N are not included as part of this Zoom product! In fact, they are not even sold on the Zoom website. Nothing on this great device will work WITHOUT PROPER VOLTAGE AND A FAST (Write-Speed) Micro-SD Card! Ordering a recommended power supply is fairly easy. But, there are SO MANY imitation micro SD cards even on Amazon, it makes it difficult to find a trustworthy source even though you have the exact mfr name, part number, and specs. You have two ways to ensure adequate proper voltage. Replace the 2 AA batteries about once per hour, no kidding! OR provide external power of 5 volts DC (1amp) to the USB port. You NEED to buy a proper power supply (AD-17 or compatible) AND a proper 2.0 USB Cable intended for CHARGING. You "can" use an external battery pack IF it supplies adequate power. While none of these are expensive, Zoom could have done us a BIG favor by including a PROPER ext power supply and USB cable! We would gladly pay a little more for a complete product purchase! Zoom chose NOT to do that. So, we NEED to do that as part of our steps to make this Q2N work! FACT!Users have complained about "the USB port", "the microSD card", or "the HDMI output" not working after "a while". All of these problems are actually experienced when the Q2N is not receiving the NEEDED 5 volts for power! Again, this points out why Zoom SHOULD BE providing a proper power supply and USB cable with the Q2N...or at least list part numbers, specs, and sources for such purchases. The biggest problem is trying to buy a legitimate micro SD card. The write speed needs to be high...approaching 80mbps or more if you want to record 1080 hd. I don't mind spending $60-100 on a proper U3/V30 rated Class 10 Micro-SD Card. The problem is REAL and it is trying to find cards that are not fakes...even through Amazon!Buy this Q2N video recorder. The device itself is great. Just understand that you also NEED to buy a couple more things to complete your purchase and be a happy hobbyist. For the Zoom Q2N, you NEED to also purchase one of the recommended high speed microSD cards. Do not throw in any old card! 4Ok so I really wanted to love this little Gizmo Ok so I really wanted to love this little Gizmo. Knowing that Zoom makes great audio, I had high hopes for this one. Out of the box I noticed a speck or haze in the lens, it seemed super minor so I figured i would try out. So from the box to a small music event I went. I got a 64gb card that worked fine..The Good:Suund quality is verypretty easy to figure out all the modesvideo smoothThe not so good:the lens definitely picks up stray light and produces a haze/glarethe color balance seemed to keep shifting during the filmingBattery life is short I got about an hour on 2 aa batteriesThe Bad... Deal BreakerThe assembly is very iffy. I plugged in a usb cable to the camera and when I went to disconnect it, the jack came right out of the camera crashing the computer. It needs to go back to Amazon....I am on the fence as to get another to see if I get a good one. The thing has lots of potential... I was Bummed 2Great camera tbut I can't recommend because the power port is poorly designed and doesn't work. UPDATE! Really bummed. I've used my Q2n about 8-10 times. This weekend my band had a big show and I brought the Q2n to capture the performance. I always use a power adapter because the battery doesn't last long enough and I would not have a chance to change batteries during the performance as I am on the stage. So I prefer to plug the camera in for power. BUT after plugging in the adapter, it's so loose that the connection is extremely fragile. I have a few cables that fit the Q2n and I tried them all. It simply doesn't work. If I wiggle the cable I see the battery icon on the screen toggle on and off. I tried to tape down the cable in a way that would keep the battery icon off but the connection simply is too hit-or-miss and I can no longer get the camera to use AC power. So this was a learning lesson and now I have this cool camera that can't really be used for how I want to use it. I'll keep it and use batteries but please know that if you plan to use this over a long period of time, you can't depend on AC power because of the poor design. No adapter will fit snug at all. It slides out with very little effort. The Q2n is a great way to capture your band's performance. Unlike other competitors who offer cameras with a microphone, the Zoom Q2n is really a great microphone first that happens to have a camera. The audio I got this weekend at a couple of gigs is very clear and not overly compressed. I had the input volume set to "auto" and the Q2n positioned just behind me (drums). No distortion! I'm happy with the results audio-wise.Video quality was good. Not the most amazing image quality but I'm okay with that. I actually don't mind average image quality for what I'm using this device for. I had 2 shows and one venue had crazy harsh white stage lights for most of the first set and we are all washed out on stage in the video. Bummer but I can't really blame the camera. It was crazy bright. Also very note-worthy: At the end of the show, someone unplugged the Zoom Q2n from its outlet. I didn't have batteries in it and relied solely on AC power. When it got unplugged, it shut down completely while in record mode. I copied the MOV files over to my computer the next day and found one to be damaged (naturally). The fix was simple: Re-insert the SD card back into the Zoom camera and turn it on. The display notified me it was repairing a file and within seconds it was finished. I shut down the camera properly, connected it to my computer and the damaged MOV file was repaired.Great little product and surprisingly small and lightweight too. I actually wish it was a little bigger and heavier as it feels fragile to me. But I can live with that (first world problem). I have since put batteries in it mostly for the extra weight and in the event it gets unplugged prematurely again. I also wish the adapter plug would fit more securely in to the Q2n. It feels like it could just slide out all too easily. I have to make sure I position the adaptor cable in a secure way as not to promote it falling out due to gravity. 2Zoom Q2n Handy Video Recorder gets added battery time now... Great little product. Clear video, easy to use. Go thru the owners manual and play with it beforegetting frustrated. I like it so far.One of the cons was not enough battery life. I saw a video where someone overcame this and Ifollowed their lead.Get yourself a Tascam BP-6AA External Battery pack. Holds 6 batteries and the camera and thebattery pack mounts on the tripod. Cool...The connection cord that's supplied will not fit the miniconnection on the Zoom Q2n, but your cable from your cell phone recharger will. See pic. I have a black shortercable on order or only .99 on eplay...This works great. Remember to turn on external power in thecamera's settings screen. See owners manual. With the battery pack on it shows 10 plus hours of run time. Now if you can find something similar to use more power to you. This one was $29 bucks. Not available on Amazon yet. Search the usual places. So looking forward to getting a lot of use out of this. Remember you can record sound only if youwant to play your guitar to it... 5USB broke after 4 weeks of light use. Showstopper. Avoid until manufacturer redesigns micro USB connection. As others reported, the micro USB port failed after less than a month. As a long time user of Android mobile phones and literally years of dealing with micro usb connection failures, I treat them gently but it didn't matter with the Q2N, simply using it causes it to fail and as everyone else noted, this means you are screwed because of battery drain and you've also lost the easiest way to transfer files to a PC. This otherwise isa really capable unit and I was happy with it but this design or manufacturing issue is a critical failure. Will see how warranty process goes and update review afterwards. Given this is just a 3v device, I might just skip the micro usb interface all together and solder in a couple of leads to a more robust 3v power supply if I have to. I do want to keep using this camera and haven't found anything similar in this price range. Will post pics if I end up modding it. Another odd thing about the micro usb was that some usb cable / power supply combinations produced audio noise - though this might have been the port getting ready to fail.7/16/18: ZOOM support was extremely responsive and had a new unit sent to me within days of contacting them. So far, no problems and happy to have it back and working. I'm hoping there was a bad batch of units but we'll see. Kicking review up a star for the great support. 3Not bad but not great,,, read my review for a better option. Decent camera quality and very good sound quality recording my band at live gigs. The cons,,, the camera would shut off and restart ever 17 minutes while recording a one hour set with my band,,, very odd, I couldn't find anything in the settings to resolve that issue so I returned the Zoom Q2N.As others have stated, it does eat batteries and unfortunately to change the batteries ya have to remove the camera from a tripod and then open the bottom of the camera,, bad design !!!Perhaps a battery door on the side of the camera would have made to much sense for doing a quick battery change.Sound is pretty good but any newer smartphone will have way better video quality. If you have an iPhone get the Zoom iQ5 mic instead of this camera,,, and the Zoom iQ5 mic even sounds way better than the built-in mics on the Zoom Q2N.An iPhone with the Zoom iQ5 makes for great stereo live sound and great video quality,,,,, I have that setup and it works AMAZING for doing videos of my band at live shows, even at loud volume.CheersDavyo 2Easily scratched lens, short battery life, sub-par everything else. Not very much good here other than the listed capacity of recording video and audio which most celphones can do today, perhaps at better quality than this. It'll eat your batteries like there's no tomorrow and the design is poor at best. The lens protrudes from the front side of the device more than anything, so any accidental drop is virtually guaranteed to scratch your lens. Not recommended. 2
