Customer Reviews

Simply The Best Sharpening Systems for those who get out into the world... I have the WGSS, the WSGFS22, and the Ken Onion Edition. All three systems, with all the accessories. I can truthfully say that for me, there are no better ways to sharpen any blades that I have... Quality, dependability, reliability- as well as superb customer service. I know of no other products that are guaranteed for 42 years... I've had lots of sharpening systems over the years, but nobody comes even close to Work Sharp. If you're serious about keeping your blades sharp, go Work Sharp. You won't be disappointed.Five Stars- only because Amazon won't let them have 10...Yes, I heartily endorse Work Sharp, and recommend their products to all... 5I wanted something a little better with more versatility I wanted to wait a while before doing a review of this sharpening system. I have had the sharpener for about 6 months now. I wanted to make sure that I have used it in every application before posting a concise review.I bought this sharpener for my birthday in September. I have used the Spyderco triangle sharpener for a few years now. I wanted something a little better with more versatility. This sharpener is exactly that. It works perfectly on almost every knife I have thrown at it. I sharpen my Spydercos, my Benchmades, my kitchen knives, machete, tomahawk, etc... This thing sharpens everything to a razor edge. The only thing you may have issues with is scissors. The Spyderco has it beat in that department. I would recommend getting the expansion set with extra fine, extra course, and a strop for $20 more. I think it's worth it. This system with everything is about $75, but it does just as well as those $300+ systems. I have seen reviews that people say "it is not really guided". That is false. It is guided. The guides are meant to set the angle. All you have to do is maintain the angle with your hand. It's not that hard. Just don t' change the angle once you run the blade down the stone. I did have an issue with one of the extra fine stones. The stone did come with a micro abrasion that would chip the edge. They sent me a new stone in a day. All they asked was a picture of the stone for their quality control department. I would recommend this to anyone who owns any knives. The only knife that doesn't get razor sharp on the diamond stones are Swiss Army knives. Not sure why. So I just use the ceramic rod provided. That works great. It gets all of my knives shaving sharp. No reason to ever buy anything else. Great product. My dad just bought one also. He has tried all kinds of "easy" sharpeners and they all fail. I told him that this one is the real deal. 5Fun to Use Well, isn't it great to enjoy your Saturday morning coffee while sharpening your dull kitchen knives! This is a very good system and it actually inspired me to sharpen my knives. Although anyone can set this up and begin immediately, I got a sense of satisfaction following the step-by-step procedure and taking my time. Did I get a razor sharp edge? No, but they're way better than before. I love the pictorial user's guide. Easy to follow, and easy to setup. I think the swivel/pivot can still be improved. I find that it tends to abruptly move down when sliding a curved knife to its tip, instead of say, to smoothly drop on its side. Also the 2 small ceramic honing rods on the sides are fixed. Perhaps if it could be rotated like the longer rod, to maximize its surfaces? The box makes for a nice organizer and will fit the additional upgrade kit just fine.I actually look forward to sharpening my knives now. Perhaps the only thing I don't like is that the original sharpening plates are not available separately. You have to get the upgrade kit plates if you would need to replace them. But I got the upgrade kit anyway, and find that the benefits I've read about it are true. 5Love the WSGSS Guided Sharpening System I've gone through a lot of sharpening systems over the years, from Arkansas stones, to Japanese water stones, to ceramic stones, to powered belt sharpeners, on and on. I get a lot of enjoyment from free hand sharpening, almost therapeutic for me, but I've always had trouble getting the results I want, nice clean bevels with razor sharp edges. I finally invested in a good set of quality diamond bench stones and started getting really impressive edges, so when I saw the Guided Sharpening system I figured I'd give it a try and so glad I did. The sharpening plates are great quality and the grits seem to be very consistent across the entire plate. I absolutely love the fact that the plates are held in place with magnets and can be easily and quickly changed out to the next grit. The base is nice and heavy even though it's not very big and doesn't move at all when sharpening. The angle guides are a cool feature, but I found that when using them it was leaving small scratches in the middle of the blade near the edge so I took them off. The kit comes with course and fine plates, but I highly recommend getting the upgrade kit that adds extra coarse, extra fine, and leather strop plates. I use a small spray bottle filled with water and a drop or two of dish soap and keep the plates wet with a fine mist while sharpening and it keeps the plates from getting clogged up with metal, a quick wipe with a paper towel removes all the removed metal. This system has replaced me edge pro apex, the only other thing I added to my set up is a Spyderco ultra fine stone that leaves my blades with a nice polished edge. 5Embellishment to the Edges Every now and then one has the opportunity to purchase an item that lives up to the hype of the advertising. I do not recall where I initially saw the advertising; however, I did go online later and was directed to the manufacturer's website (worksharptools.com) where I viewed the tutorial videos. I completed my purchase on Amazon.com.I bought the Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System (GSS) and a month later I bought the upgrade kit Work Sharp WSSA00033300 Upgrade Kit and the enhancement of the knives at my household are now complete. The blades are now razor sharp.I would recommend that one purchase the upgrade kit in conjunction with the GSS and employ the use of the Extra Course Diamond plate (220 grit, found in this upgrade kit, initially--only using the lightest pressure), and then escalating to the Course Diamond Plate (320 grit) again, using light pressure to hone the knife edge making several passes to tune the knife edge dependent on the severity of the damaged/dull-state edge. Once this is complete then graduate to the Fine Diamond Plate (600 grit) and then the Extra Fine Diamond Plate (800 grit) found in the upgrade kit).I ardently recommend you read, follow and understand the enclosed instructions and view the videos at worksharptools.com first and then follow my set of instructions as an enhancement.I use light pressure AT ALL TIMES and make more passes if the edge requires better finishing. Finally, I use the Ceramic Honing Rod to whet the knife-edge to the penultimate hone (one might say that this is more accurately the pre-penultimate--being that--before the penultimate, or the step before using the leather strop).Speaking of which, I haven t used the leather strop in the upgrade kit because it seems a tad hazardous to employ in that one must draw the knife toward oneself--in this instance, you are "drawing" the blade not "cutting" at the sharpener, as it were).I can see myself cutting my finger attempting to pull the knife blade in this manner. I am seeking a hand glove that would protect my finger(s) and securely hold the blade at the optimum angle while accomplishing this task. Because of the several passes necessary to tune the blade, there is a tendency for extreme concentration and muscle memory that is only retained from practice/repetition. I know this scenario would be more likely to happen with a smaller bladed knife (i.e., pocket knife) the tendency for injury might be realized.I enjoy the many uses of this GSS, and the sharpening plates are detachable and great for sharpening chisels and screwdrivers for watchmaking and axes, etc.I have bought many "Arkansas" sharpening stones and ceramic stones in the past and all of these stones did not provide the immediate satisfaction and ease of use; providing the ultimate edge the GSS provided in a short learning curve of time.Who wants to spend hours using a ceramic or stone whetstone with dribbling water for hours on end?Reading some of the other reviews, these persons gripe at the expense of the unit or the upgrade kit, or other trivial matters and on and on.Typical deficiencies of the human condition use this GSS unit per the instructions and one will realize the nonsense of the whiners. Finally, customer support and satisfaction is second to none. Just last week I contacted their customer support (thank you Heather!) to seek clarity on an issue and the clarity of the information provided me and the response time was fantastic. I also sought more accessories: such as a CAD drawn foam Penguin case (as an add-on/accessory) and a leather fold-up (much like the current cardboard containment unit for the upgrade kit).Quality and versatility in a small and mobile package. This is the bottom line. 5FOLLOW the instructions! & use dry Used the sharpener for about three weeks. The ease of use has caused me to sharpen all of my knives. This is a buy again and gift item.It is an excellent tool which out performs all of the stones I have purchased over the years. You do not use oil or water but you use water with mild soap to remove the filings. You need to follow the outline for a successful result. I have not tried the optional sharpening kit cause I have not used it enough to form an opinion yet. It looks like like an axe/hatchet tool which looks as if it should be used by hand cause the extra grit on the dressing edge allows for dressing an abused edge back to health. The. Ceramic sharpening attachment adds the final paper cutting edge. 5For the Blind Assassin The designer(s) deserved an award for the WSGSS. It's a brilliant example of good design. The "pivot" system, for instance, is simply the fact that the plate holder fits loosely on the stand and is molded so that it can rock back and forth a bit, just as it can in fact lift off the stand in this position. It's not even a component. That's good design, because it's simple, reliable, and effective. The slide locks the holder down, again in a very simple and reliable way. The hone is very cleverly designed as well. The materials are first rate, very much unlike the Original Knife and Tool Sharpener, also sitting on my desk but in its box to return. The WSKTS feels rather cheesy and is brittle plastic. Finally, the angle guides are just as simple, being just plastic wedges that snap snugly onto the stand. The stand doesn't budge in use, thanks to metal rods that have some heft to them, plus rubber feet. As always, you pay extra for cute kits. But seems like a reasonable price point for small diamond plates and a ceramic hone, and it's a pleasure to handle. In terms of design, the only quibble is that the guide widgets aren't quite flush with the plates. They're a few millimeters off. Not a big deal at all, but it does reduce how easy it is to start with the proper angle just a bit.The rest of these observations are for the novice who, like me, has been wandering lost for days in the wilderness of sharpening products. Hit the button if you feel that others would get some use from it...First, I should point out that putting "guided" in the starring role is an over-reach. It provides a reference angle, but doesn't help maintain the angle throughout the stroke the way clamp-based systems do, such as the Lansky Universal or DMT Aligner kits around this price point (or the KME and Edge Pro Apex at the hobbyist level). Several other products toss in a similar angle guide without making a big deal of it, like the Sharpal 156. The Aligner offers more grits and the guide, while the less-expensive Sharpal (also on my desk as I write this) offers 4 angles and exactly double the surface area. A 4-angle pair of guide cones on their own sells for $9 for use with any stone. Work Sharp should have included an additional pair of wedges for 15 and 25 degrees, like basically everyone else. I will say, though, that the Work Sharp wedges are slightly easier to lay the knife against than the pyramid-style guides.Second, while I'm a fan of their design team, I'm less so of their marketing department. I felt forced to buy the upgrade kit--not for the 800, which is an odd choice (1000 or 1200 for polishing seems more typical), but for the 220, which I need for initial reprofiling. I have no interest in the strop. A basic product packaged to give customers what they would typically want would include three grits (a la the DMT Aligner and many other kits)--220, 325, and 600--and include 15, 17, 20, and 25 degree reference angles. The upgrade kit would include 800, 1200, and strop, perhaps. There should be an included case, or pouch, also (I've taken the plastic tray from the box and put it in a shallow drawer, which works well). Still pointing fingers at marketing and management, they seem to have changed their minds over time about ideal sharpening angles, since the WSKTS (and virtually all other brands) declare 20 degrees ideal for kitchens and 25 for outdoor, but by 2015 when the WSGSS came out, they started saying 17 versus 20. Whatever difference 3 degrees truly makes, one effect is to lock people into Darex products, because the knife profiles in your house will now be non-standard. The Darex answer to the first Q&A on this product doesn't even make sense. Grits seem equally mysterious, since 220 is "medium" on the WSKTS and is called "extra course" for the WSGSS, though this likely has, at least in part, to do with electric versus manual systems. Finally, there is absolutely no information at all about the plates. Monocrystaline or poly? Electroplated? Although people say mono is just "better," I think this stems from DMT marketing material. The X factor regards other stages in the manufacturing process that can make either monocrystaline or polycrystaline crappy or steller. But Work Sharp, which is not a manufacturer of diamond plates to my knowledge, says zippo. One person in the Q&A mentions them saying a plate is good for 500 sharpenings. I can't find this info anywhere, so I either just haven't come across it or they've actually removed it. Either way, it doesn't seem like a large number for diamond. Another reason I purchased the upgrade kit is just to prolong the 325 plate life. Reviewers who say the plates go smooth after a short time may be experiencing the "break-in" of diamond plates, where the tips of the diamonds get initially broken off (so says Sharpal, at least). Not sure. BTW, yet another answer by Darex here states that the diamond plates are 1.5"x6". This is wrong. They are 1.25" x 6".I'm a rank novice at sharpening and haven't made much headway yet. I've gone more than 120 strokes on each side, of an old SAK for practice, but my arm hair and computer paper remain quite safe and intact, as do tomatoes (e.g., pushing down with light pressure without using the tip or sawing--a genuine test of kitchen knives, since people look at you funny if you shave your arms in the kitchen). I'm sure it's user error. I did get my poor battered Felco pruners back to something close to good condition in much less time, so that branches less than 3/4ths inch cut like carrots. But when I bought the pruners, they cut me the moment I got within five feet of my mailbox. Honest! I will say that the kitchen knives I've sharpened are certainly now the sharpest in the house by a considerable margin. I think I need more pressure on the initial stone to get the bur faster, then fewer light strokes going forward and then she is what she is. I think I'll be able to get workable edges on everything in a reasonable amount of time, but never shaving sharp, because I'm not interested in "practicing" at something I view as a chore I need to do now and not again for many years on most edges (pruners and loppers, likely the exception). After I get a new edge put on my tin snips, decades-neglected kitchen knives, etc. reprofiled, the ceramic hone will be what I or anyone else would use regularly on an ongoing basis. Now for the title of my review. As a blind person, I often don't know what tools will turn out to be insanely useful (Japanese hand saws) and which won't work (anything made by Dremel). The WSKTS electric belt sharpener didn't work for me, because I need to keep a hand on the blade tip to know when to lift the knife off the belt; otherwise, the tip will be rounded, as many reviewers point out. But you also need to keep a hand on the switch to turn it off before lifting the knife off: Doug the Darex knife sharpener Salesman said so in his videos! I'm one hand short. Although that was the decisive factor in returning it, it also blew up a cloud of metal shavings that landed all over my table and, doubtless, in my lungs. So, it would be an outdoor activity, and I would still need a hone for the kitchen (I had a Lansky Turn Box in my cart for $17). I'm not sure how many of these issues are remedied by the "E" series of WS Culinary sharpeners. If I were to keep all three of the afore-mentioned manual products sitting on the desk now, I'd be in $121 and all my knives would as yet still be dull, because I haven't started sharpening yet; nor will they get as good an edge as a pro service would do for $2-$5 per blade. Think 'bout that before going too deep. To sum up, it's a really well-designed system that's really hard not to like just because it has that design aura about it. Letting the holder rock back and forth a bit is kind of a long walk for all that design, though, since nobody reviewing any other product I've looked at or on the blade-nut forums ever mentions "oh, if only my stone could rock back and forth, I could sharpen the tip of my knives!" On the other hand, I definitely reach for this over the Sharpal because of the pivot. IT takes one wrist motion out of the equation and thereby makes maintaining the angle that little bit easier. It's a very fancy holder for free-hand sharpening, two small plates, and a ceramic rod. Not a bad price for that combo, regardless. Add the upgrade kit, and it jumps into hobbyist territory. The plates needed to be wider, the grit assortment needed to be more consumer-friendly (less manipulative), and the angle guides shouldn't be as stingy. 3.5 stars. 3Made in the USA! Top quality product So I am new to the sharpening game I did a TON of research before settling on this. I really liked the idea of hand sharpening instead of using a belt system. This is very well packaged, very user-friendly and straightforward. I seem to be having constant success. I just think its a bit over priced, maybe not the best bang for your buck? I would have been a lot happier if it had the leather strop included instead of making you buy the upgrade kit. I don't want or need the other dimond stones in the upgrade kit. I guess ideally having all these in your arsenal would be good. Its just that if you are going to want professional results then you will either need to purchase the upgrade kit or a separate leather strop. That being said this is MADE IN THE USA! I also purchased the Feild Sharpener before I bought this and it is a great product. I had to reach out to their customer service and they were quick to respond. I lost one of the sharpening plates for the field sharpener and it was good to know they have replacement parts available. 4Great, if you upgrade. I bought this and the upgrade it because of the flat diamond plates. So far I've sharpened a few knives, chisels, and carving tools. Nice expensive ones and dirt cheap ones alike. This has got to be, hands down, my favorite sharpening system. I would recommend it highly. I plan on getting a couple extra leather strops for it and then using 3 grits of compound to get a sharp edge. The system is heavy which is nice to help prevent it sliding around. I keep it locked but it should work good either way. It's nice how there is also something to sharpen anything that curves inward, not a common tool.I also don't agree to use a higher angle on the leather, I use a slightly lower angle because the leather will curve to the edge. But it isn't a big deal. 5This is a great sharpening solution!!! The Work Sharp WSGSS knife sharpening system is the perfect tool for both the beginner and experienced individual that s looking for a easy to use and very effective knife sharpening solution. The product is solidly built and well thought out, I couldn t be happier with my purchase. When I received it, the first thing I did was grab my oldest and dullest knife that I could find and then I followed the instruction which are included and within just 10 minutes the knife was sharp as it s ever been. I was amazed at how easy it was to bring it back to life. Before I bought this system I carefully researched just about all the systems available and I selected this one because of the key features it offers and also the fact that they offer an upgrade system, for those whom want to take sharpening to the next level. I ve already decided that I want the upgrade kit so I can properly care for my knifes without having to take them in to be sharpened. I ve already sharpened all my kitchen knifes as well as my pocket and fixed blade knifes and I couldn t be happier with my purchase. I strongly recommend this product and I plan on buying several more to give out as gifts to some friends and my son, which I know will appreciate such a great and useful gift. 5
