Customer Reviews

Excellent Value I bought this to replace my Shun stone which was a gift. The only noticeable difference in the two is that the Shun was wider. I have owned dozens of sharpening products over the years and I have to say, I am very pleased with this stone. It wears fairly evenly and, with proper use, can put a razors edge on almost any blade, even if the blade is of inferior quality. I would caution users to make sure they have used heavy grits stones or other methods to remove dings in blades/build the edge. This is stone is far too fine for that kind of work; while it's possible to build an edge with this stone, doing so will cause your stone to wear out prematurely. I highly reccomend this stone! 5Great Stone... Once it arrives in one piece. Received broken stone. I'm quite surprised that after so many people's reviews saying the same thing, you would think Amazon would get sick of paying shipping for everybody to keep sending their stones back! I would think Amazon would be more careful in packaging these stones, but I guess not. Stone came in a cardboard box packed inside of another larger cardboard box with no packing paper, peanuts, or bubble wrap! Pure ignorance.UPDATE: After calling amazon and speaking with a representative, they were extremely classy in taking care of me and also took the stone off amazon for about a week while they conducted an investigation as to why so many people were receiving the stone broken. After finally finishing their investigation, I was contacted by a representative of amazon to inquire if I still wanted to purchase this stone now that it was placed back up on amazon.com. They then allowed me to place a new order for the stone, and then gave me free over-night shipping.I received the stone packaged in nothing more than a large manila bubble padded envelope. Ironically, it got to me without any damage whatsoever! lol go figure! After finally getting to use this stone for the first time, it functions just how I expected it to. I am still concerned with how they bond the two stones together. I am already noticing small chips in the stone where the two stones meet. I'm going to monitor the issue and will post an update if anything develops.UPDATE: 03/14/2013 I've been putting this stone through extensive use now, and it's been holding up great! I've been careful to make sure the stone does not get banged into anything (including other stones) or dropped. With that in mind, the stone has done a wonderful job on my knives.I'm able to get hair popping edges on all of my blades. How good of an edge you get on this stone all depends on how good your technique is. But this stone is definitely a great buy if it's being sold at the right price. 4What you need for serious sharpening Oh yes, there is work involved, but the rewards are awesome. Most people sharpen knives and such with wet rocks, sand paper, diamond blocks, etc. And they are ok, but when you do that, and feel the sharpness, you actually feel tiny, or micro scratches, and yes, it feels very sharp to the touch, because those fine scratches will cut as well, but, have you ever sharpened a knife and had it come out shinny, polished, and razor sharp? If not, this is what you'll have to have. The 1000 side is for cleaning up nicks and scratches and returning the proper angle to the cutting point, then the 6000 side cleans all that up, and leaves a professionally sharp blade. Research knife sharpening, because correct method is of importance. Now, very important, the blade you sharpen will have to be of quality material, if not, it will never get as sharp as it's meant to be, nor will it hold an edge very long. Soak it in water for 10 minutes before use, and keep it wet, or just store it in water. I know, I know, I hated forking out the $30, but it was well worth it. Money well spent. Besides, you won't sharpen a $100 knife on a $5 wet rock, would you? Get this waterstone, it's the real deal. You won't be disappointed. 5Produces a sharp edge I've mostly been using this waterstone for sharpening chisels and plane irons in conjunction with an eclipse style guide. My results have been very good and i'm able to get a nice polished edge that will easily shave the hair off my arm.As with most waterstones it should be soaked before use and kept wet during sharpening to get the best result. It does go out of flat pretty quickly, depending on what you are sharpening of course, but this is to be expected with a waterstone. If you do a lot of sharpening I recommend getting a diamond plate for maintaining the flatness of the stone. The only other thing to keep in mind before buying is that if you are using this to sharpen plane irons with a guide you will only be able to sharpen blades that are 2" wide.Given the price and overall quality, this is an great stone especially if you are just getting into sharpening. 5Smooth operator. This whetstone is great for typical knife sharpening and polishing maintenance. It is especially good if you have a great set of knives that you want to maintain, like Henckels, Wusthof, Shun, etc.It can be used in about 5 - 10 minutes after being soaked in water. However, it takes about a full day to dry completely. For typical knife sharpening maintenance, you first sharpen on the 1000 grit side, followed by some honing & polishing on the 6000 grit side.Alternatively, you can skip the 6000 grit side and hone the knife on your steel rod instead. However, the 6000 grit gives the knife blade a polish that cannot be matched by the rod.Note that this stone will not fix damaged knife blades. This stone is also not good for dull knives; I recommend sharpening a dull knife on 240 grit first, followed by sharpening on 1000 grit, then a hone & polish on 6000 grit (or hone on your steel sharpening rod).If you are not concerned with polishing your knife blade, then skip the 6000 grit and get a dual-sided whetstone with 240 & 1000 grits instead. 5Beginner can get a good edge. I bought a 250 grit stone along with this to revive some long dead edges. I have used this stone as a part to fix kitchen knives, chisels, pocket knives and even a hatchet.I would like a grit between the 1000 and 6000, as it seem to require a little extra effort in the transition, but I do get a nice, sharp polished finish. With a decades old hatchet I was able to take an edge from what can be described as nothing more than "Blunt" to stuck in the wood sharp after a series with a file, 250 grit, 1000 grit then finally this 6000 grit. I didn't expect much with the soft metal of the hatchet, but I was pleasantly surprised.I was able to get a dangerously sharp edge revitalizing an old chisel with a mirror finish. No complaints there.I have an easy time keeping my kitchen knives sharp enough. It only takes a few swipes on each side with each knife to keep them nice and sharp. My girlfriend and I have never been happier with our knives. The 6000 grit side is fairly soft. if you do not have steady hands, it can cause trouble. It is easy to gouge, which will mess up your stone.Comes with directions. 4Sharpening Stone I always thought my kitchen knives were relatively sharp. But, now I know I was basically using stone axes to chop up my vegetables instead of razor-sharp surgical instruments that fall through the tomatos and make slicing potatos more like a ballet on spuds. Literally you cannot feel the cut, you just watch the pieces falling away. Study a few videos about knife sharpening, buy this beautiful and effective stone, and reach a level of culinary equipment efficacy that you may have thought was reserved for samurai warriors. Oh, and buy a box of bandaids. Everyone says a sharp knife is soooo much safer. That is only true after you mentally transition to the realization that even the slightest touch along the edge leaves a fine line of separated skin on your hand. The pros online view this as an economy stone for beginners. You can spend a lot more money on waterstones. But, I'm a beginner, and this set was perfect for my beginningness. In a couple of years I'll let you know if I'm now eager to spend more and achieve an edge that will slice vegetables just by setting it on the block next to the crudites. 5Best water stone I have ever had/ have (used it all up and got another) I have 6 different water/wet/whet/sharpening stones and this is the only one I useDO NOT USE OIL ON THIS WATER STONE YOU WILL RUIN IT oil is not water and you cant wash away oil if you used oil on this stone, THIS STONE IS FRAGILE AND CHIPS EASY SO TAKE CARE OF IT, keep it wet 5 minutes before use and DONT LEAVE IT OUTSIDE if you use the stone a lot and the surface becomes uneven get a large flat metal sheet of stainless 12x12 will do and rub the stone on it it will resurface it and make it like new.this stone can make straight edge razors sharp easy and will keep your kitchen knives, swords, pocket knives and razors super sharp if you know how to use them, i have a small plastic case i keep it in, this case is filled with water so the stone is constantly wet and when i go to use it i set it on a plastic tray to keep everything clean, super convenient and keeps everything of mine sharp. plus it smells nice :P few years in and I got myself another stone after the first stone got used up so much.it is now 9/17/15 i bought it on 12/25/12 It is just now starting to become too thin to use, i worry its going to break in half one day. 5Very good waterstone for the money!! The Woodstock SteeleX is an excellent waterstone for the money! Saw the pictures of the one that arrived broken and was hesitant to purchase at first, but when compared to the prices of Norton waterstones and others, decided I'd take my chances. I'm certainly happy that I did! My waterstone arrived fully in-tact, wrapped and sealed in plastic. This stone is perfect for putting a razor-sharp mirror edge on your knives which is all I use it for. I've read other reviews where people use it to sharpen tools, chisels, etc. and give mixed reviews of it's performance. I cannot speak for its performance in that area, but I couldn't imagine it holding up well to industrial tools as just sharpening my knives creates quite a bit slurry, which again is perfectly suited for knife sharpening and necessary to help you achieve a polished edge. The 1,000 and the 6,000grit are of equal width. The 1,000grit side gets ground down much faster than the 6,000grit side and that's to be expected as you use the 1,000grit side to hone your edge and create a burr, then use the 6,000grit side for burr removal and final polishing. I find that anything higher than a 6,000 grit is unnecessary and highly over-rated as you can get a "scary" razor sharp edge with the 6,000 grit and a leather strop (a leather belt will work too). It will smoothly, cleanly, and efficiently remove a swath of hair off your arm if you run your knife down it. You can actually hear the "pop" of each individual hair and the metal edge "sing" its metallic notes if you go slow and listen close--Truly is a beautiful thing to see and hear. Gentleman, there's no excuse for dull knives. As the old saying goes "The man who keeps dull knives, is simply a dull man." Note: This is a "maintenance stone", which means if you've been neglectful and your knife is extremely dull and needs a new cutting edge reestablished. This is not the stone for that purpose. It is possible, but will cost you a LOT of width on your 1,000grit side. Use a 250grit stone or diamond sharpener to restablish your edge, then hit it with a 400/600grit stone a few times to refine it even more before you put knife on the Woodstock SteeleX. Again, this waterstone is a great maintanence tool for the money! If you find your kitchen knives not cutting and performing like they should after you "steele" them. Soak your stone for 10 minutes (with water for the love of God) and run your blade down the 1,000grit side about 15-20 times until you can feel a slight burr with your finger nail, then flip your blade over and run it about 5-8 times through or until the burr is removed. Polish up on the 6,000grit side alternating back forth, even number of strokes on both sides. Or do like me and make the 6,000grit side work as hard as the 1,000grit side. Run your blade down the 1,000grit 15-20x's, establishing your burr, then just flip the stone over to the 6,000grit side, turn your knife edge burr side down, and run it down the 6,000grit side 15-20x's or until you can no longer feel the burr, then polish up with alternating strokes and finally a good strop. In just a few short minutes your edge will "sing" again and the spirits our long past fore-bearers will gather and thank you for reconnecting with them by practicing the dying art of shaping and polishing metal with stone. 5Glad I got a good one. After reading some of the reviews I was worried about receiving a broken stone but I didn't. Apparently they have changed their packaging methods because it was better than one of the previous reviewers had. It came wrapped in plastic with foam sheet around it packaged in a tight fitting box which was then wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a larger box. Mine came intact and in good shape. I will say this though, if you are using a jig like this Robert Larson 800-1800 Honing Guide which I have, you will be flattening your stone every time you use it, if not during using it. The jig wears a rut in the stone so the life span is shortened. But goodness does this stone put an edge on. I sharpened a brand new set of chisels, my knife, planer knives all with a mirror finish edge that easily took the hair off my arms. Also it would be beneficial to store this stone in a rubbermaid container filled with water. keeps it from drying out and becoming brittle during storage and also means it's ready to go when you need it. Would recommend. 5
