Customer Reviews

Accurate, but they rust I have had this product for about 2 months. I cleaned the lubricant off the square when received. I measured these against some 1-2-3 blocks and found them to be very true. I did not have the misaligned blades that other reviewers have noted. I am overall very pleased with their accuracy--especially considering the price. The problem is that I pulled the 6-inch square out of the drawer yesterday and it was already rusting. The squares were well cared for and properly stored, but apparently must be kept coated in protective oil or they rust. That is inconvenient--to say the least. Good for one-time usage, or if you use everyday. Consider how they will be stored if used intermittently. 3While this is good for preventing rust These are square enough for my purposes(wood working and scale models.) They look nice(to me) and they feel solid. My only complaints are:1. They were drenched in oil upon arrival. While this is good for preventing rust, I think they could have dialed it back a lot.2. I measured these with my calipers. Bizarrely the dimensions used don't work out to an even decimal inch, architectural fraction, decimal metric or fractional metric dimension. For example see the attached drawing of the smallest square. I'd assume that is due to a lack of precision except the numbers match from square to square.Overall these are very good squares for the price. 4Not even good enough for woodworking. A joke to call them machinist's squares. EDIT: Downgraded from 3 stars to 1 star and ultimately being returned.I originally figured these to be ok for woodworking. True, they are decently square. However, the fact that the blades are inserted into the body at such a skew, means the blade will not lie flat to the work-piece when registering the body against the side (think "striking a line perpendicular to the side of a work-piece"). On every single square, the blade is either completely lifted off the work-piece, or only the very end of the blade contacts the work-piece.These are junk. Either people got lucky with theirs or they don't use them the way that I do, and the defects can be overlooked.Original review:The short version: I am using these for woodworking and they are *just* good enough for that. These cannot even remotely be considered a machinist's or precision square. The grinding, fit and finish are simply much too poor. These just arrived today, and I immediately set out to determine their accuracy. Using a granite surface plate, a pair of known to be accurate 1-2-3 blocks, a machinist's straight edge and feeler gauges, I began testing these. In the planes in which they are used, squareness is very good on 7 of the 8. (4 squares, square inside and outside). The issue lies with the 4 inch square, in which the blade contacts the test block very close to the body and begins to run out from there. It's very detectable against a lit background, and is more than .002 - less than .0025 over (just under) 4 inches. It's also very apparent that the issue is not really squareness, but rather poor finishing, as the gap is very consistent for most of the blade length. I'll probably grind away the high spot next to the body, retest and at that time, choose whether I want to avoid the inside face of the 4 inch square. Very disappointed, as that's the square I would probably reach for the most. The blade edges are all quite flat when registered against the straight edge, except the inside blade of the 4 inch. Again, the poor finish there is the culprit.Overall, the finish is rough. Lots of little dings, chips, burrs. They will take a couple hours of careful work to improve/correct.Now, the most abysmal part of these. Not one blade is inserted into the body straight. Face the blade toward you, these are clownishly crooked. (See pictures). I am not at all expecting precision in that plane. However, this smacks of utter disregard to workmanship. I feel like it took effort to make them this bad.It pains me to keep these, but they'll be ok for woodworking. 1I must have received a good set, because mine say stainless steel and appear ... I received yesterday and I will be using this for wood working. I must have received a good set, because mine say stainless steel and appear to be so from what I can see or tell. I placed all four squares against one another on my granite counter top and no light shines through. For the money, these were perfect for me. Square and perpendicular. I could not be more happy. I was a little reluctant at first after reading some of the reviews, but I am glad I purchased them. They came in a box labeled Shop Fox D4089 and they were made in India. 5Decent, but not accurate enough for me I think these are worth the price. The tolerances are not tight enough for my needs, so I returned them. It was perhaps unrealistic of me to expect near-perfection in such a low-priced product. If you want a few decent squares kicking around the shop, they could be nice. But I know I'd always be hesitant to use these when it really matters. On arrival, each piece is lightly coated in oil, in it's own sealed plastic bag, inside it's own little throwaway cardboard box. No padding. All four little boxes were loose inside the outer product box (not the shipping box).I cleaned them up carefully, and placed them back-to-back, upright, on my granite surface plate. Shining a light from the rear, there was no place I could detect these were touching. I'm sure it was some tiny imperfection, and it caused light to show along the whole edge. Ignoring that for the moment, the reveal was not even. These are just not very straight. On top of all that, at the outside corner, a nasty .003+ gap opened up, because each piece seemed to have received extra sanding there. There are some light polishing marks, but the gap is the giveaway. Then I checked each of them against my 1-2-3 blocks, inside and outside. All off. Good try, not good enough for me.To make sure it wasn't just me, I compared against my known good mid-priced (not Starret) 4" double square. Yeah. That thing is just perfect. These are just ... not.So, I returned mine, but I could see these being useful, depending on your tolerances and needs. I just didn't need yet another halfway reliable square in my shop. I'm ponying up more cash, and ordering the Incra, like I should have done initially. 3Three out of four were accurate I was pleasantly surprised with this set of machinist squares. They are very well packaged and sealed in plastic bags. No case is included but at this price how could anyone complain. There is plenty of oil on them as others have mentioned but I see no reason to complain for something that protects the tools and is easily wiped off with a rag. I promise there are worse protective options used. I bought a set of chisels on Amazon that arrived with a lacquer type protection on them that was darn near impossible to remove even using acetone, lacquer thinner, etc.On to what matters. Are they square? Well, in my case three out of four were square. The larger 6" square was off by about 0.003", which is pretty bad and the reason I returned the set. I may buy this set again to have an inexpensive second set on hand. I have no doubt that it is possible to receive a set in which all four are perfect, which judging by the reviews is more common than what I received.I measured the squares against a Kinex DIN 875/1 machinist square and a set of 1-2-3 blocks. I used my cast iron table saw as a flat surface and also my jointer bed. All four squares were as square as I could measure except the 6". Unfortunately the 6" was the main square I needed in this set. The 6" was at least 0.003" out of square and the beam was slightly skewed which for my needs made it useless. I was tempted to keep the set anyway but I really wanted the 6" square to be accurate. I probably should have requested a replacement instead of returning the entire set, but since they claim the squares are all accurate to within 0.0006" I felt it was fair to return them. The finish on each square was excellent and only one had a tiny spot of rust on it that wasn't even that bad. If I order another set I will update this review. 4Stainless Steel Claim is an outright lie, and they're nowhere near straight. The Stainless Steel claim is bull. An outright lie. NOT stainless steel. Just good old carbon steel, soaked in oil. Repacked the in a Baggie full of WD-40 to keep them from rusting Even compared to each other there are gaps of daylight peeking thru when you hold them up to the light together. Not sure what good they'll be. Might make a nice graduated set of rusty door stops. 1Square enough for me. I was hesitant to buy these due to mixed reviews but I gave it a shot anyways due to the great price. All but the largest square were perfectly square on all sides (at least as far as I can measure. The largest square was undersquare on the end by the thickness of a piece of packing tape which a quick Google search tells me is 0.003". This is still square enough for my woodworking purposes so I am very happy with my purchase. 4 stars for the product but 5 stars due to thier price point compared to similar items. I would buy again if I ever lost these. 5Save your money and get a better set The squares were inadequately packaged, and came loose inside the bubble mailing envelope, and I assume got banged around a bit in transit. The blade of the 100mm square is deflected 3 full mm to the side end to end, and the beam is itself milled rhomboid by 30 minutes of arc (I guess the square they used to calibrate their machines was off too!). The blade of the 100mm and the 150mm square is noticeably off center. There is also the matter of the beam thickness. They were *not* all the same thickness as advertised. I was so disappointed with the first two I opened that I never bothered inspecting the smaller two. If zero stars were an option... 1A 90 degree square - imagine that! I'm one of those consumers who tries to be informed. I prefer to buy USA stuff when I can - getting harder all the time to do that. This item has some spotty reviews, a few said that the squares are not quite square - - and if that's the case, there is no point to having these. But, choices on line being limited, I decided to chance it, as one can always return it to Amazon if it's not up to snuff. These are up to snuff! I'm a machinist, but hobby, not by trade. And have a machine shop, these compare well with my other squares and when put on a surface plate back to back. They are all spot on 90 degrees - at least the set that I received. Nice, no markings at all, made in India, but nice nonetheless. 5
