Customer Reviews

Broke with the first use! I received the clamp yesterday and the handle broke while applying this band clamp on it first use - a 1" x 3" wooden frame 18" x 20".The clamp also failed to keep the frame square. After applying moderate pressure the frame moved 1/4" out of square and an increase in tension did not correct the problem. The handle cross section reveals a VERY thin plastic used to form the handles. After reading other reviews it appears that the company must be reducing quality in an effort to save money, since earlier reviews suggest a quality product but many of the later reviews show breakage after just a few uses.Too bad because the one handed ratcheting mechanism makes sense.Of course Amazon is refunding my money and I will try a Bessie instead. 1Busted! I bought this in June 2015 and the handle busted after a few uses gluing up boxes! I have 2 more of these workhorses that I have used and abused for the last 6 years (purchased on 2009) and was pretty disappointed that the quality of the plastic and build has plunged way down on the newer models. 1Retractable strap + Hand Ratchet = WIN Awesome tool! While I haven't had it long, and thus tested for longevity, this is one solid product. I'm a student Industrial Design Engineer, so I do have some training on well built and it seems rigid and something that will stand the test of time. Win on design lifespan! The retractable feature, like a tape measure, makes glue-ups easy to do without those dream Dr. Octavius arms...or another set of hands. The one-handed clamps, like Irwin's Quik-Clamps are a godsend and make tightening easy. I would say these have a much tighter holding/locking feature than the Irwin's which tend to slide because of the caliper action. These have a ratcheting feature, so incremental locking is only available, and thus does not allow the micro-adjustments caliper clamps have. So, over-tightening is an issue. The adjustable angle clamps are also great and I successfully used these to glue-up my hexagonal and pentagonal shapes. There is also enough gap at the apex of the angle guides to to micro-adjustments with your miters. Dial it in perfect and clamp it down! The mechanism is heavy and stays well planted flat on the nice rubber feet...but as with most glue-ups, some gravity weights were needed to seal the deal.Overall though, this product definitely fulfilled my needs and I am impressed. LOVE the retractable strap! I bought two, I'd buy two more.=) 5This One Time at Band Clamp I took up woodworking over the last year, and I recently had to assemble my first table. I'm not sure what I would have done without this clamp. (In fact, I could have used a second one for a piece that big.) It's fantastic for holding boxes together during glue-ups. And since it can conform to pretty much any shape, you could use it for non-rectangular pieces as well. It's also handy to use during dry assemblies/test fits, to get an idea how your piece is coming together and see what adjustments you might need to make before final assembly. The included plastic corners are very helpful for boxes. You can easily take them off if you don't need them, then put them back on afterwards. The quick-release button is very handy as well. 5Awesome, easy to use, great features and large capacity Best overall framing, miter clamp or band clamp I've ever tried. FAR nicer than the Bessey, Jorgensen and Merle Clamp; I'm guessing it's far better than those I've not tried yet w/ it's unique features / retracting automatically, etc. Far superior to the lightweight Jorgensen band clamp, more convenient than Rockler's fairly nice band clamp, and much easier to use than the expensive, heavy, bulky Merle clamp. Corner grips ate ingeniously designed to grip any angle. They should give you extras for polygons, as they adjust to any angle. My only concern is if the ratcheting mechanism might eventually fail. 5Great Product I bought this for a project I was working on and before selling on this one, I looked way too much into reviews, price, etc. and got this one. It was perfect. I've used it a few times for it's suggested use and one to hold together a 60 inch headboard that was coming apart. It was easy to use ever time. The only thing I want to warn people about it so make sure the strap is locked on the loose. Mine wasn't, and it came out. It took me about 20 minutes to get it back in. I made sure this wont' happen again by putting a few layers of duct tape about the end.In short... get this if you need it. 5I have 6 of these clamps and really like the way they function I have 6 of these clamps and really like the way they function. Unfortunately, three of these have broken at the smallest cross sectional area on the handle. I contacted customer service and was told this was "normal wear & tear". I have worked with mechanical design engineers all my life and I can say with certainty this is a design/material strength problem. The strength of the material in the smallest cross section of the handle is not adequate for the load to which it will be subjected. I am 70 years old with mild arthritis. I don't think I am capable of putting more force on this clamp handle than can be expected in normal use.2/1/16 UPDATEThe 4th of 6 clamps broke this morning. I purchased the six clamps in sets of 2 over about a year's time. 4 of the 6 have broken at exactly the same spot in exactly the same type of fracture. As I said before, this is a DESIGN/Material problem. Customer service informed me they do not have replacement parts for this clamp and had no suggestions for fixing them. Unfortunately Wolfcraft lacks the integrity to admit they have under designed the handle let alone make it right. This has cost me $170+ for defective products. 1A must have for wood workers (but buy another brand) I was tossed up between this model, and the more expensive Bessy band clamps. I figured I could have 2 of these for the price of one Bessy clamp. I am making 12 display cases with mitered corners and wanted to avoid brad nailing them (thats 24 glue up if you are counting). I am on my last glue up now and would hightly recommend these clamps. Very well made and a steal of a price around $14 each. If you are on the fence about this purchase, you will not be sorry. If you are looking for some use tips keep reading. This may sound like quite a chore, but this whole process takes about 2min. Do a dry run to get the bands adjusted right. Once snug, release the red locking arm and let out about 4-6" extra from the spool side (note that the locking arm on the other side is always left locked). Add glue to all miter surfaces, then loosely line up the miter joints on a table. Bring the band clamp to the project. Align the main clamp corner to one miter, and work around the project aligning the corner blocks. Then firmly pull the slack out of the band and lock the red lever. If you pulled tight enough you can adjust the 90 degree corners up on the project if you need to center the clamping pressure (2 of my cases were 3" deep, while the rest were just 3/4" stock). I also realigned the tips of any miters that were not perfect. I then turned the clamp handle 1 revolution and used additional clamps (where needed) to get the "show" surfaces of the project in the same plane. Then I cranked the clamps through about 3/4 of their travel. When you pluck the band it sounds like a banjo....nice and tight. Let it dry for 30-60 minutes and on to the next glue up.EDIT: After the above post, I put the clamps away for 1yr. I pulled them out to glue up a new project. The red toggle clamps literally disintegrated into a million pieces. Luckily my dad is a machinist and was able to make aluminum replacements. But I would steer clear of this brand. 1Worked great and was excited to find an easy to use ... I used this on 3 frames. Worked great and was excited to find an easy to use frame maker. THEN, on the 4th frame, when I tightened the hand clamps, one broke. Very bad cheap construction. The maker Wolfcraft advertised a 10 year guarantee. I have emailed them twice on the on line contact email, nothing. Bad customer relations. Bad product. Stay away. 1I own the Bessey band clamp and purchased the Wolfcraft to compare I've been using a similar version made by Bessey but recently a project required another band clamp. I decided to purchase the Wolfcraft to compare the two. After using both of them, my go to band clamp will be the Wolfcraft. It's easier to operate with the one hand click system compared to the Bessey's knob and handle system. With the Wolfcraft to retract the band you use one hand to click the band tighter. With the Bessey clamp you need to use the wheel knob first if you have a lot to retract then for the finer adjustments, the clamp like handle is used. Both of these require two hands. Additionally, the red plastic cover on the knob on the Bessey keeps coming off. There's nothing really wrong with the Bessey except why pay more when this brand works just as well and in my opinion works a better. 5
