Customer Reviews

Junk.If there were a way to give this antenna zero stars I would. It is not even close to being resonant on any frequency band for which it is supposedly designed, as measured by my MFJ 269. Other antennas connected to the same mobile mount are spot on. Don't waste your money, this antenna is no bargain.Ended up getting a Comet UHV-4 and was able to get it to resonate in every ham band segment. 1Not a genie in a bottle - buy something else - multiple antennas my be the only answerFirst arrived very very late. Total piece of junk. This antenna appears to be amazing. It tunes up on 2M, 70 CM, GMRS, FRS, 10M, 11M CB, 6 MTR, 4 MTR all with low VSWR. Its crazy good. It hears well too. OOPS, it barely resonates. While I can hear (receive) a simplex signal from4 to 5 miles away, it transmit line of sight. This means that you can talk to people you can see. Defeats the purpose of a radio. I believe it must have a resistor built into it causing the crazy good swr/vswr readings. It does hear well, but so does a coat hanger. It does transmit line of sight, but I could just yell. WASTE OF MONEY. SCAM ITEM. I replaced it with a simple name brand dual band and increase my transmit range by 1000% percent. 1Get a Diamond or Comet quad band. Please do yourself a favor and save up a few more dollars and get a name brand antenna. Received this antenna, mounted it on the side of my vehicle with a good ground on a solid mount and am very disappointed. When I first pulled it out of the package, I thought to myself, "This doesn't look that bad!". Boy was I wrong. Making 15-20 minute drives across town anywhere from 55-75mph this thing flops down at its "folding feature" 2-3 times requiring me to pull over and stand it back up. I eventually wrapped the joint with Scotch Super 88 diagonally back and forth like tendons to hold it in place. Upon hooking it up and testing it, the SWR is through the roof on 6m and 2m. The needles on my meter wouldn't even cross at an SWR reading as they were standing almost straight up. On 10m the SWR was 1.5:1 and on 70cm it was reading about 1.2:1. In trying to adjust it, it appears that the lowest element would need to significantly longer as the SWR is higher at the lower frequencies. I extended it as much as I could and still be able to tighten the screws down. The bottom coil was only holding on with one screw while doing this. Something else I noticed that may be by design (doubtful) was that when I put my ohm meter from the center pin of the connector to the bottom element, there is no connectivity. It appears as an open load. When I place my meter across the shield (side of the base coil), and the bottom element, it is a dead short. This could be due to the way the matching network in the base is set up with loads and capacitors, but I don't recall any of my antennas being open from center pin to element. I have some that appear shorted to ground (not RF shorted though) but all of them still have conductivity from center pin to driven element. I will be sending this antenna back ASAP. 1JunkJunk. It does have low enough SWR on my mobile in all bands but it's totally deaf. Everything is static when receiving. Switched to the basic Nagoya dual band antenna I had laying around and receive was perfect. Talking simplex on 2 meters to a buddy about 15 miles away, I was using this "Wishring" antenna and my buddy could hear me great but I could not hear him at all. We have always been able to talk Simplex that distance on any of my other radio's I've had. Today I wanted to make a slight adjustment on the upper element and noticed the allen head screw was missing, then I noticed the other elements had missing screws too. This was after I tightened them down and I cranked them down pretty hard when I set it up. 1Great for use while stationary; Dismal failure while in motionI purchased this antenna as a cheap way to get on 10m & 6m mobile using an existing radio. SWR within acceptable limits with a well-grounded adjustable "trunk lip" mount on hatchback. Nice to be able to hit 6m repeater and work 10m & 6m simplex while driving. HOWEVER, it has a nasty habit of folding over while in motion. On a 30 mile trip at speeds up to 60 MPH, it folded over somewhere along the way (radio was turned off so I was unaware until I got out of the vehicle). Others have written about this problem. I chose to go ahead and get one despite their warnings against this antenna. Now that I've confirmed the utility of 6m while mobile, I'll get good Larsen NMO low band antennas for mobile use. This antenna will be transformed into a portable antenna with ground plane for stationary use only. Bottom line: it's great for use while stationary, but as others have cautioned, the antenna will fold over while in motion. 1Decent antenna, several flawsI get decent SWR from this antenna on all 4 bands. Make sure that you mount this as high as possible on your car and in the clear. I tried to side mount it and could not get an SWR below 4:1, moved to the roof and got better than 1.3:1 on 10m, 1.2:1 6m, 1.00:1 on 2m 1.2:1 on 70cm. The fold down feature is both a blessing and a curse, great for low clearance areas, just an easy lift and foldover, on the negative side however, when offroading, the bouncing around has on more than one ocassion caused the antenna to fold over on its own killing signal propagationupdate: today driving down the freeway, this antenna folded over on its own every 10-15 miles, this happened 3 times, and after the 3rd time, it happened almost immediately after resuming driving, item defintiely has some quality issues. I ended up duct taping the upper folding portion to the tube it sits in and it held a great deal better, but ended up folding over again. Unfortunately this is out of the exchange period and I guess I will have to come up with another solution. 3TERRIBLE! :(First of all, mine did NOT arrive in that nice little antenna bag, but in a cheap plastic bag. Second, it appears to be used! There are marks in some parts that show either attempted modifications or just very-very poor quality production. Tuning it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE! I've spent HOURS trying, but it just simply won't tune! The best I could get out of it was: 1.8 on 70cm, 1.4 on 2m, 1.1 on 6m, but on 10 meters this piece of junk would not go below 4.8, which is USELESS!!! :( So, you have two options; either try another brand, or get an expensive automatic antenna tuner just to be able to operate on the 10m band and safely on the others. All together this antenna is terrible!!! :( 1Do not use for mobile use, only stationary. It works as a stationary antenna. I put it on my car hesitantly. I hit 75mph and it didn't bend but later I was driving at 65mph and it bent and the top part came off. I would defiantly go with Diamond MFJ or any other name brand, it is worth the extra money. They all have a screw cap that stops the antenna from bending while driving, but still allow you to bend if you want. 3Quad Band Mobile - It Works!Appears to be a copy of the Comet brand quad band mobile antenna but a fraction of the cost. Well constructed with quality materials. Standard uhf base so a variety of mounts are available. Not tons of gain but it covers 4 bands and it works! Reasonably compact for what it does. I'm happy with it.Connected to TYT 8900 plus quad band transceiver.I saw some reviews where some folded over at high speed. Simple way to avoid that is to mount it so it is turned sideways to the wind. It's not rocket science. 5... all 4 ham bands (had to tune for 10m easy to do with antenna analyzer and good ground)antenna swr is very low on all 4 ham bands (had to tune for 10m easy to do with antenna analyzer and good ground), good performance on 2m and 70 cm the antenna will fold over there is a spring joint above bottom black band, i purchased this for a tyt th 9800 ham radio works great with it!!! 5
