Customer Reviews

Breaks very easily This is my second WD passport and after less than a year of use, it has stopped working. I've read on forums that you have to be extremely careful handling passports as their internal disk is easily damaged and can prevent the device from working or even prevent any data from being recovered without extreme cost. I wish I'd known this before purchasing a second one, as I would have researched other companies. It should at least come with a warning label about its fragility. 3Worth considering! Works so far, I am buying a second one. I am a musician, musical production and recording engineer. I use this to back up my IMAC and my music specifically. I will say I have come to almost hate Apple, like with their recent "upgrade" to High Sierra OS which has rendered some of my most important recording equipment useless. (Thanks APPLE for not telling us that important programs like Apple Logic pro 9 will not work in the new os, meaning we have to pay over $200. to update to Logic X which is far less functional than Logic 9 as a DAW =Digital Work Station = how we record) Several other standard programs and interfaces are now useless. (power PS applications... gone. Ok sorry this isn't about apple but this is used on my apple. Works well so far to back up important files 4Western Digital Support Is Terrible Couldn't get product to backup my files. Downloads were successful, but then nothing. Read Quick and My Passports User Guides were no help. Called WD support located in India, whose rep and supervisor both use English pseudo names but are Indian. On phone for 60 minutes and all they do is send e-mail with link to same info I had already read. I consider myself C+ with computer technology, although some less critical people would probably consider me B. Stay away from this product unless you are super computer savvy and are comfortable that you can resolve any/all technical issues without tech support whatsoever. Returning product. Fortunately has a customer friendly return system. 1Fails to back-up to Time Machine after 3 months Purchased 2TB My Passport for Mac in February 2017 to replace an aging WD MyBook. In May Time Machine failed to back-up to new 2TB drive - could access drive and file structure but no back-up. Would work again after Mac reboot only to stop backing up within a day. Western Digital advance RMA replacement drive and new cable ( you pay $6.58 UPS charge) worked for a week then started same issue. Too late to return to Amazon so stuck with a bad product. 1It's a shame because I really liked how it flawlessly interfaced with Timemachine I purchased this product January 2017 and it already stopped working. My Mac is unable to back up my data and says the "disk can't be repaired". The longest distance this device had to travel was from my desk drawer to my desktop, never dropped it, always properly ejected it. It's a shame because I really liked how it flawlessly interfaced with Timemachine, but the lifespan of the product is terrible. I wonder if it was defective. 1Just plug it in and start moving stuff around. Works perfectly with MacBook Pro. Photo Library, GoPro videos, iTunes Library I use this on my MacBook Pro for the following...- Photo Library (currently +60k photos and +20k videos)- iTunes Library (currently +20k songs)-GoPRO videos (approx 4000 1080p and 2k videos)- Not even half full. Works just as fast as my internal hard drive and because its attached via USB, then it doesn't eat up my processing speed on my home drive.- Just plug it in and start moving stuff around. Doesn't get any easier. 5EASY, no added software, just drag & drop (passive) and works perfect with Mac! I previously had a WD 2TB portable & love these WD-for-Mac products! They work SEAMLESSLY with Time Machine BUT ALSO are EASY to use as a drag & drop hard drive, no special software or app's needed (THANK YOU Western Digital!!!). Essentially a true (passive) plug and play HD! 5My go-to portable hard drive I've delivered nearly all of my client work on these hard drives during the past three or four years and haven't had any failures. They're inexpensive and reliable. Mac owners just need to make sure they're buying the products labeled "My Passport for Mac" 5Works perfect as a back up storage system. This works perfectly for my mac with the time machine program as a back up for all of my files. After looking at the reviews, I made the choose to purchase this and I'm glad I did. I have the 2TB version and it's plenty of space for me and my files. Great buy and easy to use. Comes with cable to connect to laptop as well! 5Plug in, and walk away! Note: If you read nothing else, you can get your user manual here: wd.com/docs (I read it in the fine print in the material that arrives with the drive)I've waited WAY too long to back up my Mac computers. I remember reformatting drives in the past, and it was no fun. I decided to pick up the 4TB version of this drive and give it a try. I knew to expect the first backup to take a while, so that was no problem. What I liked was that I was able to plug in, and the time machine immediately opened to start a back up. I just waited until it started, then walked away times... I am now using this as a time machine for two different mac computers. After backing up two computers, I've still got 3.65 of 4TB free. I thought about getting the 2TB, but am now glad that I did not. I did purchase the $9.99 warranty through Amazon, only because it includes data recovery (wasn't clear if the WD warranty would). I do expect this will stop working one day, but I think its the best of the devices I reviewed. I hope to never need to use the warranties, but I'm glad they are there.I'd get this you have even ONE Mac Device. I don't feel a need to backup my Android phone because I have google photos, and much of my other stuff is backed up on Google Drive. Finally, I stored it in an old external hard drive case. Its super tiny, so it can be neatly stashed on a bookcase. I'm sure you've heard its important to go gentle on your drive.Hope this works well for you! 5
