Customer Reviews

EhI wouldn't recommend this camera. I hot it for my 3yr old as I do photography as a hobby and he wanted to take pictures in the woods with me. The screen is tiny, it hard to see it or what you are taking a picture of, I did not notice a flash on it which in shaded woods is important, the games can't be disabled and in my opinion don't need to be on there. Also, one of the battery covers popped off the second time it was dropped. This cannot hold up to a child as children drop and throw things. Save your money, it's not worth it. Not even for a 3yr old. 1Poorly designed for children - think twiceThis camera has 4 major flaws that should make you think twice about giving it to your kids.1) The shutter button is flush with the camera body, and not visible from the back. This makes it hard for kids to find it. Frustration = less engagement. Shutter button should be on top, and should stick out.2) There is a SIGNIFICANT (about 1 second!) lag between shutter press and image capture. This means your kid has to remember to hold the camera steady for a whole second AFTER pushing the button, or they get a picture of their feet. More frustration = even less engagement. The designers don't seem to understand that children have a low threshold of frustration.3) You have to navigate through a MENU to view pictures! What should be a single button press (and is on every other camera in the world) is FOUR on this one. Another source of frustration and disengagement for children.4) Finally, the most unforgivable faux pas, there are VIDEO GAMES on this thing and you can't turn them off! They are in the same menu you have to click through to view pictures, which means every time your kid wants to look at the pictures they took (which is approximately every 5 seconds), they are tempted by VIDEO GAMES! I didn't buy this so my nephews and nieces could have another brain-numbing time waster, I bought it so they could exercise creativity. But no less than 5 minutes after it's out of the box they are entranced by these stupid VIDEO GAMES!I like that it's splash-resistant. I like that it's drop-resistant. I like that it can hold an OK number of pictures in its internal memory. But the above are serious flaws that should make you reconsider. 3This is a wonderful first camera for a childThis is a wonderful first camera for a child. My three year old granddaughter loves taking 'cheese' just like her momma. It is easy for her to use now and she will grow into it and discover more functionality. I highly recommend this one!Pros: easy to use and travels wellCons: noneI will update my review if this product fails to meet my expectations for durabilityAs an online shopper I rely heavily on reviews left by others when trying to decide what to buy so I try to leave useful reviews for those products that I feel strongly about. Please let me know if you find my review helpful. Thanks so much. 5Nearly everything about these cameras is perfect. They're nearly indestructibleNearly everything about these cameras is perfect. They're nearly indestructible, take lots of great photos, and give young kids a meaningful access to technology. Two complaints:While the cameras themselves are virtually indestructible, the battery cover plates on the sides tend to pop off when dropped. We smooshed a bit of soft foam into the spot you pry them open, and that's helped so far.The games that it includes are utterly unnecessary. They're lousy, frankly, and need literacy skills in a way that the rest of the camera does not. VTech brags in the manual about how educational they are-- but one is about a *worm* turning into a butterfly! 4Love itWe got this for my 5 year old daughter and have no regrets.Pros:-It has several games that she enjoys playing-She can pick a frame before taking a picture-It has an option to distort images (and what 5 year old doesn't LOVE that!)-it's had almost daily use and it's batteries have lasted nearly two months.Cons:-when the button is pushed to take a picture, there is a delay. It took a few weeks before she remembered to wait until the shutter sounded off before turning away.-it has been dropped (4 year old brother and 2 year old sister) and, while it took a few tries, one of the battery cover continues to pop off. However, this is only when dropped.-it's images aren't the best but for a 5 year old they are good enough. We haven't tried to print them, so I can't attest to that, they seems a but more grainy that we are used to with todays technology. All and all, I would buy it again and will happily get her brother one in a years time. 5Great starter camera for kids but the battery cover is too easy to openOne of my kids has this camera and one has the older Kidizoom Connect model. They are both easy enough for a 3 year old to use. I deducted a star because in the few months that we've had the Connect they have never managed to get the battery compartment open, whereas within 2 days of having this Pix model we were hunting for the battery compartment cover twice. The features of the 2 models are basically the same except that they have different games.~This takes very low quality photos that seem comparable to those taken with cheap cell phones. But, for pre-schoolers, who cares. It's better than no camera at all. Once they learn to actually hold the camera still, it is possible to get clear photos.~I could do without the games programmed into this. I was after a camera that wouldn't immediately break and with few enough buttons that the kids would be able to operate them without throwing off settings. I guess in this day and age of smartphones that isn't enough and manufacturers feel like a product isn't marketable being that simple??~I love the audible electronic shutter sound that plays when a photo is taken. It's a good indicator for the kids on when they can move the camera.~This camera connects to the computer with a micro-usb cord which is not included (unlike the Connect model which uses a mini-usb and IS included). If you have Android phones you'll probably have a few laying around anyway.Overall, a very good gift for preschool aged children that will allow them to explore their world and isn't just a "toy." My kids do love these Kidizoom cameras so much that it was a constant fight once one got one and I couldn't wait until the other's birthday so they could each have their own!Example photos show photo quality and some of the effects built in. 4Real camera for little ones!Got this as a big-brother gift for my 3 1/2 yr-old son when our second child was born. When I ordered this camera, the older version was still available but marked as discontinued and this one had no reviews. The old model had great reviews, so I figured going with the new one was a safe bet.My son really enjoys the camera and used it heavily when he first opened it. So the batteries ran out quickly, but I hope as his use levels out then the battery use won't be quite so heavy. He takes pictures of all kinds of things, often moving the camera before the picture is done resulting in blurs or dark pictures. Anyway, he still enjoys it. He especially enjoys watching the video he and daddy took when they were playing together. My impressions:-Batteries are in the handles, which is an efficient use of space and easy to access with a fingernail (no screws). The battery doors open from the side of the handles (not from the bottom like the old model).-Contrary to the Amazon description, my camera did NOT include the 4 AA batteries.-On startup you set language, date, and time.-The buttons and menus are intuitive and the camera is very easy to use. A couple times pushing buttons the press didn't register.-I noticed they moved the "take picture" button to the front compared to the old model that had it on top. The location feels natural when taking pictures.-When taking a picture, you can use the dual-eye view finder or the screen.-After taking a picture, it shows briefly on screen then goes away. You'd go to the playback option in the menu to see it again.-When editing a photo, the original photo is preserved and your edited version is a new, separate photo.-The picture quality is on the lower end and there's no flash, but I think the point is this is a real camera that a little kid can use and is their very own. I think that is plenty cool. If your child is a bit older and taking an interest in photography, then get an inexpensive adult digital camera instead of this one.-The outside is rubbery and seems durable so far.-There's a strap included that you can attach to the camera.-The camera will automatically turn off after a few minutes of being idle.-There are sounds when navigating around the menus, including a cute "spring" sound when the camera can't do what you're asking. When you take a picture, there's a "camera" sound. I turned the volume down a bit because I thought the default was a little loud.-No USB cable is included, but it's supposed to be a standard micro USB which we have plenty of already. 5Favorite Christmas present!Bought this camera for my 3 year old niece as a Christmas gift and she absolutely loves it. It's her favorite Christmas toy and she takes it with her everywhere she goes! It's simple and easy for her to use. Love the grip on the sides, and the sound effect when she takes a picture. The photo quality is not all that great, especially in dimmed lighted areas but that goes for any device, and honestly you can't expect that from a toy meant for toddlers. Takes really great photos outdoors or where there's sufficient light. My niece doesn't seem to notice the difference in quality from the camera and her mom's phone, she just loves having her own camera to use anytime anywhere and her mom definitely enjoys not having to share her phone anymore lol the filters and games are cute and simple, definitely appropriate for the age is being targeted to. For those with techie kids, the games will probably not be very entertaining at all, but in my case, they hit the the target. overall it's definitely a great item. It's sturdy, it's holding up well, and it's been dropped many times since its been opened. The only reason I deduct one star is because it was missing the strap that's supposed to come included. Would of been useful, but not necessary. 4Disagree with the age rating: probably ages 4 to 6The camera delivers on everything it promises. It is kid friendly It s sturdy and durable It s easy to hold and operate It takes pictures It takes video with sound It has games and special effects.Having said this, and speaking solely from an adult perspective: The quality of the photos when printed 4x6 is not great (though it will satisfy a child). If downloaded to a computer you can edit the photo in Photoshop or Elements (or other similar program). Levels and unsharp mask will help. The large hand grips on either side make the camera easy to hold and help avoid blurry pictures from camera shake. It can only be used outdoors because there is no flash for indoor photography. (Therefore, overexposure and backlighting often will decrease picture quality). Ditto for videos. The games are for younger children not accustomed to the more sophisticated games found for their age group on i-pad or computer and even cell phones. Entertaining enough for short car rides or restaurant wait times a little extra thrown in. The special effects are fun but younger children will need help. The battery compartment does not require a screwdriver. This makes life easier for the adult, but I m not so sure it s safe for children. (AA batteries are still small enough to put in a child s mouth and, if they should corrode or leak, the acid could hurt a child.) The view screen is small, but adequate. I do like that the child doesn t have to close one eye to take a photo since it has two viewfinders. You need to separately purchase a usb cord to connect to the computer if you don t already have one around. Another separate (but optional) purchase would be additional memory, although you can delete unwanted or already saved photos from the built-in memory to free up the space. The controls are pretty intuitive, logically placed, and easy to operate.Overall, it s a good product that will consistently perform well for its intended audience and, on that basis, I think it deserves a very high rating. The only confusion or reservation I have is that I m not exactly sure what the intended audience is. It is rated to be from age 3 to 8 and I do not agree with this rating. I think it has a much narrower age window, probably 4 to 6.At age 3, the only thing a child can do with the camera is play the games and take the photos. The camera has been built so that this age group will be able to hold it, drop it, and control it, but at the expense of better quality lens (maybe something at the level of a cell phone camera?) The colorful and childish design is also geared at a younger age group.By age 8, the games are a little silly and the expectations for the photos are a little higher. The 8-year old can apply the frames and special effects unsupervised, but it gets old fast. The colorful design and interface are a bit childish for an 8-year old and he d be embarrassed to be seen by his peers with something so babyish. 4Kid-friendly cameraThis is a neat camera/toy. I was expecting a simple, kid-friendly camera. I didn't expect any games to be on it. They are fairly simple, like a bunny game that plays like an easier, shorter Frogger, plus like 2-3 other games. Very simple, unremarkable games, but when my son first used this camera, he would play that bunny game often. You're able to apply fun filters to the pics, which I thought was cute. Actually had a bit of fun using them. Of course, as this is a kid's camera that handles a smaller-sized SD card, don't expect quality from these photos. It's simply memories your child is able to take on their own, on an item that that is claimed as their very own.It is bulky, but is still light-weight and easy to grasp in hands of all sizes. My biggest gripe with this camera is the fact there is a significant delay between pressing the button and actually taking a picture. My son cannot yet understand that there's some technological delay, so he continues to press the button, and immediately lose focus of what he was capturing to beam with absolute pride that he took a picture. There are just so many photos of blur, the floor, and other junk not worth keeping because of this. There are a few nice photos that he was able to take, which we will look at. & I have had this for a few months now. I've noticed that my son will periodically bring it out to use (we leave it in a drawer he can easily access). I think it's cute that he will randomly take out his camera to take pictures every now and then.Inserting the SD card was quick, easy, and in a location difficult to accidentally slip out. This is a good product if you want your little one to share in the memory-capturing moments. 4
