Customer Reviews

Don't believe everything you read ...I have a small network equipment rack with switches and other non-server stuff. It's a small wall mounted rack that for many years has held routers, switches, patchpanels etc. - it's 12" deep and this unit said 11.3 inches deep. That's unfortunately not true - you need at least 13" if not more to have access to power connectors. Compared to all the other switches I have, this is by far the biggest unit I've had that just deals with a managed switch component. For something where you need another device to manage it from, I beginning to doubt this investment.I tried to contact Ubuiquity to inquery about the size/dimensions of the unit but was told off, and and "explained" that they don't answer questions like that. So instead I will let the world know. What's important to understand that while the management software ("unifi") is quite capable, it's a different device that's needed ("cloud key" or a full server/vm setup with particular software). That's another $100 at least so when you compare prices to other switches, keep that in mind. This thing runs HOT - there's no fans in it, which means the top of the unit has a heat-sink and gets quite warm. I guess that explains the 500W requirements. This isn't a POE switch, so it's very odd that a simple swith would draw that much power. The unit gets quite warm even without any load. It's quieter than other units because there's no fan - but it's in a room with lots of other equipment with fans; you won't notice it's quieter. But you will notice the additional $$$ on the next month's utility bill.Feature wise, this has what enterprise grade switches need. From VLAN to Radius intergration to LACP. The software is very different than anything else I've ever seen, and it seems overly convoluted to setup a VLAN group for instance - I'm used to just tag each port with the VLAN number, here you need to configure profiles and remember which names map to what, create enough profiles to have all VLAN combinations etc. - it works, but it's very different. An interesting requirement is that LACP have to be consecutive ports. i had to rewire some patch-panels to make that happen without a wire-mess as a result (my plan was to use top or bottom row ports - but since the numbering is vertical that doesn't work).I also tried support for another question that went totally unanswered. It turns out, the UniFi system requires location in the same subnet as the switch to "discover it". I wanted to use the POE option but the POE switch is on a different network. I thought I could simply enter the IP address of the device and take it from there, but for this switch that's not an option. At least not that I could find, and asking support turned into a "you didn't buy a POE switch" debacle - like I only have one switch! After a while I simply gave up assuming a non-solution.If you think you get professional support as part of buying this unit, forget it. I'm thinking that with a serial port connection or perhaps connect to the IP assigned via DHCP you may be able to register the device across network segments. I didn't see that option in anything I read though. With UniFi AP that's how you do it - but this doesn't seem to follow the same setup. The last thing I want to emphasize is that this the control software is focused on WiFi network, and this switch is part of the same management software you would use to setup WiFi access, rules and security. It also "insists" on using the "security gateway" - in other words, this is a "small piece" of a total solution if you want to get full value, you need everything to be from the same manufacturer. I've read reviews from a lot of satisfied installers that are full bore with Ubuiquity. but I thought it was worth mentioning if you are looking at this switch just as a standalone solution. It's not. You're better off with traditional managed switches for that.So I'm giving it a chance .... but with a lot of caution.3DOA on arrival - fixedNo power upon arrival, should have checked prior to putting in rack. Emailed seller and looking online for solutions. Decided to open up the box (as I'd already dismantled my rack) and get a meter on the power supply...molex from supply board to main board not connected? Up and running 5min later. No fault of seller I'd imagine, but seemed to be common enough that "no power on arrival" was easy to find, though was said due to a "bad batch" still in stock. Just in case anyone runs into the same issue, it's 4 scews, no warranty sticker, much easier than returning and waiting on a new unit.3YES!Up front admission, I interact with this type of equipment for a living. That all being said, this equipment could not have been easier to get setup and running. It is feature rich, and performed exactly as I was expecting it to in the environment this device was selected to support. As a managed switch, it has performed every task put upon it.4These things run so hot you could cook on them. These US-48 switches run so hot they could double as space heaters. This is apparently a well known issue with no fix. In fact support says the extreme temps are 'normal'. You can't hold your hand on them after running for a few hours.I wanted to like these switches because I'm a big fan of their Unifi wireless stuff but the heat is just unacceptable.Support, after telling me the temps were normal, suggest I try different power cords to see if the melting plastic smell would improve. Power cords? Seriously?Sadly - I'd have suggest everyone avoid these until Ubiquity decides to fix the overheating.2Great (big) switch! This switch performs very well, and has a lot of throughput for a switch in this price range. I especially like the 2 SFP+ ports. My only complaint is the size of the switch. It is very deep, and it does not fit into most wall mount racks.5Slow traffic after 2 weeks of use, power cycle to fixInstalled this and it worked like a charm for 2 weeks (replaced a 16 port D-link switch as I was out of ports). After 2 weeks of use, I noticed I was getting extremely poor performance on computers that had been generating lots of network traffic (throughput had dropped from Mbs to Kbs). Power cycling this device fixed the problem. I don't need a device I have to constantly power cycle to keep my network running.1Love UniFi more each time I deploy itI have been deploying UniFi gear every chance I get at work, for my side gigs, and for friends and family. All in, I have deployed 30+ UniFi devices at this point. Been incredibly happy with the quality and the value for the money. This 48 port switch is no different! It has almost all of the features of switches costing 2-10x the money with none of the frills. UniFi may not be appropriate in large enterprise applications, but it sure fills a need for home and SMB to get a lot of additional functionality over an unmanaged switch.5Bye Bye Cisco, Hello UbiquitiI'm going Ubiquiti all the way. The friendlieness of interfaces, ease of use, compatibility with devices. Bought 3 products of Ubiquiti so far and love them all. (AirMAX, 48 non POE Switch, UnifiAC Access Point)5Garbage Switch - Failed Shortly After 1-Year in Service!I had high hopes for Ubiquiti and their Switches but the US-48 failed shortly after a year. Not a complete failure but the switch loses it's configuration each day and basically stops passing traffic, requires a reboot to resolve. Here I am rebooting a switch each-day to resume network access.I'd rather use a Netgear.....The provisioning of the switch is glitchy. The US-48 runs hot and the fans never turn on...Save your self money and headaches buy buying a different brand. I went with a refurbished Brocade ICX 6430-48P for 1/4 of the cost and with more functionality and POE.110g sfp+? heck yea! What origonally sold me on this switch is that i wanted to plug a server and a fast client to the 10g ports on the switch and get a blazzing fast backbone. that happend with zero overhead. so far im using lc fiber conectors to there 10g fiber moduals and its working great. also used this switch to set up more vlans for ip cameras that are on a diffrent network and router. that worked no problem after setting it up on the controller. I wish this switch had all 4 SFP+ ports but i guess then no one would buy there 16 10g switch, witch i will be getting! overall this switch is consuming a 3rd the power as my older comandline baised one from HP. and thats going to prove a big diffrence in the ellectric bill over a year!5
