Strong signal strength for ~500 feet when configured as an access point (AP) You need to study one or two of the many set up videos and/or blogs to get this up and running for your first use without too much frustration. With that said, the user software is excellent as is the product quality. We set this up to provide an outdoor access point that would allow our staff to check-in rental trucks on the street frontage. We're getting a very strong signal at least 500 feet each way, on both sides of the street - even when behind parked trucks.The unit is mast mounted under an eve of our building about 30 feet from the nearest point of the street. Line of site to the AP is interrupted by landscaping, our main sign, parked cars, etc. The signal strength remained more than adequate in our tests using a WiFi signal strength app on an android phone.This product can be configured to be much more that just a wireless access point which is what makes your first install a bit confusing. Once you get past that, I know you'll be impressed with the performance. 5A Great Product I wanted to use this by itself to extend the range of the internet access. Purchased one - tested this in high traffic area 2.4GHZ home networks all over the place, at least a dozen WIFI networks between test points. I was able to get 5Mbs perfomance from approximately 70 yards. This is not what this unit is for - but, I'm wanting to save a few dollars. I then tested this unit on the property it was to be used on - out of city, aimed device at an inexpensive netgear repeater (could have used an old router) and was able to get 22 Mbs perfomance from a hundred yards. Router/Repeater was inside of a metal shed - I'm confident the performance would have been much better if we did anything external. If you have a building 100 yards away and just need to get a good solid connection from your home WIFI - this works great. Just remember that you won't be talking on your cellphone if you are standing between the two points :) Again - I'm not using it the way it was intended to be used - but, maybe somebody else is thinking the same thing I was thinking. Packaging was very good, the product is very solid. It is a really nice piece of equipment - you can tell it is designed and built with pride. 5At Last! A Great Product That Works as Advertised!My house is located in such a manner that Comcast is unwilling (due to lack of interest or poor customer service - I leave that up to you) to bring cable into my house. My only choices for internet are DSL or satellite. Satellite has such poor reviews online that I shied away from it. That left DSL. Well we have had DSL for 10 years - at a blazing 1.5 mb/sec - in other words third world internet. After long discussions with Century Link it became obvious that they had NO intention of improving my situation. Then my son purchased a house about 600 feet from my house. He had high speed internet. So we decided to try the Ubiquiti Nanostation to set up a wireless bridge between his house and my house. My house is hidden from his by another house and heavily treed property. To my absolute amazement the wireless bridge performed flawlessly - was easy to set up and now provides me with 40 mb/sec internet. All this was achieved by simply putting one unit in his 1st floor living room window and the receiver on the roof of my deck. Once we set his unit on the roof of his house the signal strength would be even better. Thank you Ubiquiti! I now have decent internet when I was at the point of believing that I never would. Highly, highly recommended.5Great radio and directional antenna for repeating remote hotspotsI mounted this NanoStation on a mast above my RV to pick up remote WiFi hotspots. I use this together with the Ubiquiti Networks AIRGATEWAY-LR AIRGATEWAY INDOOR AP EXT ANTENNA. They work great. The NanoStation works best in a campground when mounted high so other RVs and buildings do not block the signal. The antenna is directional so you need to point it at the remote hotspot. I had been looking for a year to get wifi signal to our guest house. Tried several of the wifi boosters and none worked. I happened on this nano station while reading about something else. I read reviews from folks who use this to capture wifi in their RVs and in workshops and other buildings outside their homes and if worked for them. I ordered the NanoStation and the Ubiquiti airGateway-LR airMAX WISP 2.4 GHz (a small router that attaches to it). I will tell you it was not easy to setup (I am not a network person, so it was like trying to understand a foreign language) to install. I researched and found written help and videos online that finally allowed me to set it up and have it work. Work it does!!! Since the successful installation 2 weeks ago it has had a strong and steady signal and we can even stream Netflix without buffering issues. Have patience while setting it up and keep trying...it is worth it when it captures the signal and works. (The reason for only 4 stars is because of the difficulty with the installation...not the performance of this unit.)4Awesome even without a clear line of site.Put one on a utility pole about 25 ft up and the other on the house about 28ft up and gave an excellent point to point. This PtP is up a hill and through a ton of tree's, I have no clear Line of site, but these things still Rock the connection with full throughput of speed and bandwidth up amd down. I am vey happy and surprised at how well these do under these circumstances. They are not hard to configure if you are at least a basic user of IT stuff, even if you are not thier is plenty of help online through the UBNT community or just google or YouTube it... It's easy if you take the time to look. Nothing else will compare to this equipment.5Perfect option as a WiFi AP for extending range on current networkI got this antenna after much research and deliberation. I needed to extend my current wifi coverage by about 400 - 500feet to share with family members and this worked perfectly. Using a simple guide on Youtube by Crosstalk solutions I was able to set this as an access point very easily, just remember to set the static IP on your pc before trying to access the antennae. Its currently mounted on the facia board on my roof, pointing in the direction of the houses I wanted to give signal. The spread is amazing ( might be more than 180 degrees), I'm getting 3 out of 4 bars at every location I tested. My house is on a small hill and everyone I'm supplying is at a lower elevation for reference. I went with 2.4Ghz model to help penetrate the trees and other houses blocking my line of site. I'm also surprised at ~400ft every cellphone I tried had no issues transmitting to the AP. Way better than I hoped for, super signal everywhere. But read on to learn about setup...Can I give this six stars? Ten?We have a barn some 300 feet from the house. It has no power. We want to use wifi there. After much research, I found the Ubiquiti products. Basically, it's a mighty radio. Hook it to your network via an Ethernet cable and it makes you a broadcaster. Configure as a hot spot (access point) and you have wifi many hundreds of feet away. It's directional but is so powerful that I am getting the signal all around the house as well as at the barn and inside the barn. Running Speedtest, I got tons of bandwidth. (They have non-directional products in case you need to blanket an area, and these devices can be networked so that you can cover any facility (this is how stadiums and office buildings are networked).Plus:- OMG, does this work well. Blasting signal everywhere.- Quality: Beautifully made and attractive- Can mount indoors or out.- Includes Power Over Ethernet. You hook your router to a supplied power box which has a power cord; then you plug a long Ethernet cable into the other port on the power box and it goes to the Nanostation, which only needs the one Ethernet cable.Minus: Configuration is not for everyone. Pretty technical. But that's a consequence of how flexible these devices are, and there are many online guides and videos from Ubiquiti and others; and their online support is terrific. If your need is covered by one of the videos or online guides, just go step by step. While I am fairly experienced in IT and networking matters, I failed when I did it without a guide (some arcane settings -- in my case bandwidth had to be set to 20 MHz because most phones, iPads, etc. do not support the 40 MHz default. There were some other hard to guess settings.)A final shout-out to their online support, which I pestered several times before purchase. Their product line is very complex and it took a while to determine what would meet my needs. But they have the experts and gave me my answer.Rock solid, high-performance solution if you need a super-strong wifi signal.5RV WiFi accessUsed the NanoStation M2 and the airCube AC to connect to WiFi services while traveling in an RV camper van. Setup is very easy if you follow the detailed instructions at Build a Private RV Wi Fi System with a NanoStation & AirCube AC by David Bott (see YouTube tutorial and website).Of note, powering the airCube and the NanoStation can be done with the included wall wart 120 VAC power supply for the airCube or the 120 VAC POE injector included with the NanoStation. Initial setup of the NanoStation and the airCube is done through the web interface for each device; to connect to a new WiFi access point, just connect to the NanoStation web interface scan and select a new signal.Note that depending upon the WiFi provider, connection may be as simple as connecting to a provider, may require a password (which can be entered on the NanoStation web interface), or may require opening a captive web portal to enter access details (name, access code, etc.).5GREAT AP/Bridge! Haven't found a better unit yet.The NanoStation M2 is excellent for AP scenarios or bridging between home and a shop or a friends house. They will go 5 miles with LOS. These when paired next to some of the most expensive wireless routers today, the output power has been about 10dbm better, which provides greater throughput with better signals. The reboot time is only 10 seconds after updates, and that leave the customer or user offline for a very short time if updates are needed. The weather conditions this was tested in was: Top outdoor temp: 115F 10% humidity....105 average with humidity in the 80% range. Highest wind speeds were 55mph gusts and 20mph sustained. The testing was done over a 6 month period of time and I have had excellent results from all units. the G5 units also work the same if not a little better. Setting these up as your own ISP in a point to multipoint application is another great setup method for splitting up a 50mb down and 10 up to several friends. The nice part is, the friend would only need the station setup.5Worked great/better than the NSM5. 500feet with obstaclesI initially used a pair of the NSM5 trying to transfer our 108mbps connection. It goes through about 3-4 walls with drywall / wood siding possibly some trees. The NSM5s did work but the signal strength hovered between 2-3 bars. Signal strength was -76 to -80 which is not super great. The speed test resulted in 24mbps on a good day.I bought another pair of the NSM2s since I read it works better with obstacles.Out of the box, I noticed the signal strength was at 4 bars no matter which way they faced.. When I took it to the remote location, I was impressed that the signal strength was 4 bars. Did a speed test and it gave me 92mbps.Based on my little experiment, I would say the NSM5 may be better if you have a clear line of sight as in a long pole clearing all the obstacles in the way.The NSM2 is better with obstacles.The cable company told me it would cost $5000 to run a line to the other house and it would take 2 months and I will have to pay them $60 per month after that. For $170 total investment, this can't be beaten. It also is more secure in a way that robbers can't cut the cable or phone line to disable all your security cameras.Highly recommended!!!Edit: I discovered that the default signal strength was 28dbm which is the highest level available. It also radiates the most power at about 600mw. FCC limits indoor antennas to 100mw. The good news is that reducing the signal strength by 3db cuts the power in half so by reducing the signal strength to 17dbm, I should be in the 50mw range which is half of the FCC max. I can also go another 3db up but since it is in a bedroom, I chose to be a little on the safe side. How did impact the signal?? On a clear day, I was able to get 75mbps which is not bad and when I tried it on a rainy day, I got about 45 mbps which is also not bad. My criterion is that I would be able to watch 2 netflix streams and with 45mbps, those can be 4k streams if I want to.5
