Easy to use/learn I bought this as an Amazon refurbished product. I would never have known based on the condition, it seemed originally packaged. I used the product to track a live (but failing) 110v circuit through the house including the concrete slab. It worked very well and helped me identify where the connection had failed. It is very adjustable and the AM station it picked up when not receiving the warble was even enjoyable. :) Worked well, remember to press the interlock when turning it on to prevent the battery from running out when in storage. 5Works great for tracing low voltage HVAC wiring Purchased for use in HVAC tracing thermostat wires and matching up equipment in remote locations. Just what I needed. There are so many situations where the various pieces of HVAC equipment in factories, warehouses and office buildings are not marked. There can be dozens of pieces of equipment and dozens of thermostats. I waste a lot of time trying to figure out which units are connected to each other e.g., thermostats, package units, separate air handlers and condensing units. This unit allows me to use the low voltage 24vac lines between the thermostat and the unit or between the air handler and condensing unit. It does not matter if the units are powered or not since this unit can handle hot wires up to 220vac. I had no trouble finding a unit by putting tone on the thermostat wire and then going up on the roof and checking for tone the corresponding thermostat wires on the roof top unit. In most cases, the wires from all these units are not near each other so there is no cross talk ... you get a very clear signal. Does exactly what I need it to do. 5Outstanding Cable Locator For The Price I bought this to find an open circuit in my son's house. We applied the tone to the hot (black) wire of an outlet that had no voltage. We traced the tone across a ceiling and into the utility room where the electric breaker panel is located. We then removed the black wire from the breaker applied the tone to it. We were able to trace the ton about 4 feet to the point it quit. We found a GFI outlet on the other side of the wall where the tone disappeared. When we removed the GFI outlet we found burned wiring terminals. To verify that we were in the right place, we applied the tone to the original location. Sure enough, we had tone coming to this outlet. The total cost of the repair was less than $85, including the cost of this cable locator. I've also used this to find another open in a power circuit and to verify a telephone cable. In my case it more than paid for itself in one job. 5Helpful tool for re-sketching home electrical installation The kit is well-prepared with necessity attachments for multi-testing purposes. The merit thing about this wire tracer is, the flexibility of tracing live/dead wires throughout domestic voltage levels (DC/AC 0-250V). The demerit thing is; sensitivity is manual which make it difficult for average users to tone it right. Adjusting appropriate sensitivity helps a lot in locating the accurate circuit breaker. The average users need to get familiar with the functionally of this device to know how to deal with it well. After all, this wire tracer is so great & helpful for engineers, who need to re-sketch electrical installation of any home/apartment. 4This little set seems to work well but watch out for one thing... The batteries used in each unit, the Fox and the Hound, I think they are A23's, 12 volts, and are small, about half the length and the same diameter as a triple A battery. Fine. Except pay attention when you get yours. Both, both, both ends of that battery look the same and both look like the positive (+) end you would normally see. You have to look carefully at the body of the battery to see which end is + and which is negative. It ain't obvious. I know. I installed the one in my Hound backwards and, of course nothing worked. Hmmmm.......Figured it out, changed battery ends on the Hound and went about my business. Works really well but read the manual carefully. It takes a bit of a touch to use the set right. I downloaded one online and printed it out to read it easier.Anyway, put the batteries in right, and work with it a little bit and you'll like it. I take it there is a more smarty pants one, for more money for "commercial" use but for a homeowner's occasional use this guy is fine. Probably even for a professional just to get going. Good price, good gear, just learn it a bit before it really matters. The manual even tells you that.Triplett is an ancient electrical brand, like Fluke, Klein, etc. They all tend to make good stuff. If you think you have a use for a guy like this give it a try, you won't be sorry, IMHO. 5Amazingly sophisticated product, with an amazingly well-written and educational 64-page manual If you are looking for a product that was designed by an Engineer instead of a Marketeer, and with a manual that is written by an Engineer rather than a Technical Writer, then this is it!To be sure, it does have its flaws: The manual is the size of a credit card, with 62 pages of tiny text - I read the PDF on the web instead. The plastic housing lacks the finer fit and finish of more modern products. And, the spaces for the 9V batteries are cramped, making it very difficult to close the covers without a bulge remaining.I also have the $80 Extech 40180, and this product is in quite a different class, with the following additional features:1. It is provided with a conductive metal probe tip, in addition to the insulated plastic tip.2. Probe has a signal strength LED, in addition to the speaker / headphone jack.3. Probe also acts as flashlight, allowing probing in dark spaces without having to turn on noisy fluorescent lights.4. The injector box has a speaker, in addition to the speaker which is present in the probe.5. Continuity test has an Audible Tone mode, in addition to Lit LED mode.6. Tracer tone can be changed between Warble and Pulse without having to open case.7. TrueTrace feature allows detecting which pair of wires signal is injected in to, by shorting at far end and listening for a change in the pulse rate.8. It is designed to survive accidental connection across 120 Vac.9. Injector can be connected to the base-station of a cordless phone, to wirelessly send its test tone to the phone's headsets. This allows you to use the TrueTrace capability at a distant location, even if the probe would not pick up an adequate signal, or would be overwhelmed by 60 Hz related noise. (Though not mentioned in its manual, the Extech can also drive the base-station of a cordless phone, however, without the TrueTrace feature, this is not of much use.)Jumpers inside injector's case also allow: 1. Disable speaker. 2. Disable TrueTrace. 3. Change tone to a higher pitch. 4. Change Warble tone to Continuous tone (The Extech does have a slide switch inside the case to do this).The manual is very clearly written, by someone with a deep understanding and considerable experience in using this product under a variety of difficult test conditions. It would be the envy of Hewlett Packard, which was once known for its excellent user manuals! Note, though, if you are not technically inclined you may find the manual overwhelming, and may prefer the Extech's 4-page manual instead. 5Underwhelming at first, now it rocks my world. When I first got this I was a bit underwhelmed by it. It seemed to bleed into other circuits and it confused me. My first impression was walking around a basement with a bad AM radio.However, I figured out that this thing absolutely rocks. After I tweaked the RF level on the sending unit once and it was good to go and haven't changed it since. I am using this every other week or so to trace wires both live and dead. I've used it to trace wire through non-metal conduit buried 8-12" underground. I've used it to chase crazy grounds that have broken continuity. I've traced through walls both new and old--and it's highly accurate in determining position.I have extremely high confidence that I can trace virtually any wire with this. I think this is the most useful, time-saving tool in my kit at this point.One caveat: this device is not useful for tracing to a a circuit breaker. Use a (much cheaper) breaker finder for that purpose. If you are tracing to a circuit breaker that is on, the RF will just bleed into all other circuits, which is exactly that this was designed to do. 5Great help So far I've used it for two projects. First was to find a short in a circuit in my house. All electric circuit are run through the attic. The attic has blown insulation covering all wiring. What a nightmare!!! Breaker box on one end of the house, short on the other end. Would have never found short without this tool. There was no logic in the way the house was wired. Think I saved about eight hundred dollars on that. Second job was a in ground dog fence. Wire had broken and fence not working. Found area break was in quickly. Still had to dig around to find wire.This is not a two to five thousand dollar tool. It gets you close. It will track a single wire with no problem. Wires crossing will pick up some of the signal. The more you use it the better you get using it. 5I use three different types and this one is my first to grab... I've got what I call the "shot-gun". That one it the big one with the hand held wand, "looking' underground long distances for the wide range.the second one is the '22'. That one is the absolute wire in the panel. the extreme detail compared to the shotgun Blast, you might say.Well, this one...This one is the combo of what I explained.I still use those other two when the detail is extremely needed or the wide/deep range is needed but this one is not as wide range of 70ft underground at 700 ft away nor is it the absolute "22" accuracy of the sencond one explained.This is a great unit all around.Strongly recommend 5Works Great Tracing Dead Power Circuits I purchased this device initially to try and locate the wiring for 5 electrical outlets that had no power and did not show up in a breaker box. The Triplett 3375 Fox & Hound Jr. performed perfectly. In fact I was amazed at how well this inexpensive device worked.The dead outlets were in an unfinished kitchen area of a guest/maids quarters on the 2nd floor over a very large garage and the breaker panel was about 200 ft away on the ground floor at the other end of the garage building. I was able to trace the circuit, which was 12 gauge Romex, through the wall, down to the floor and heading to the back of the building. I was then able to locate the circuit in the wall about 3 ft above the breaker box, where it seemed to stop. I cut a small hole in the drywall, at the spot where the signal seemed to stop and to my surprise found the end of the cable, cut off and hanging inside the wall at that exact spot.On another occasion I was able to find a cut off cable in a wall about 4 ft from the receptacle, and again I cut a hole in the wall where the signal dropped off and the cut cable was right there. In both cases the signal was loud enough to use from the device without headphones. Just make sure that the circuits you are tracing do not have live voltage on them (if you're tracing power circuits). The probes seem a bit light and cheap plastic, but they work great. I am really happy with it and would highly recommend it. 5
