Customer Reviews

I Needed an Extender for my TRENDnet Wi-Fi Router Not sure if any residual problems I am still having with my router is because of the router itself or the TRENDnet extender is not strong enough? It was slightly more complicated to set up than I originally expected, but thankfully my tech friend was able to lend a hand and help me get it done to work with the router, which did not have the "switch" that was in the preliminary instructions. As soon as we were done installing and setting it up, though, I immediately saw a full-bar, strong signal on my wi-fi network. Unfortunately, shortly after that, within a day or two, I lost my wi-fi signal again, and had to unplug and replug this unit in order to get it back on track...a reboot of sorts. The plug was very warm to the touch when I went to unplug it, so again, not sure what may be causing some of the remaining issues. My router is a few years old...I am considering just getting a new router and possibly returning this extender. It works strongly but it seems to be somewhat inconsistent. 3Trendnet TEW-737HRE Like several others here, it was a slight challenge getting this to work. However, once it was working, I am impressed with the results. The one thing that impressed me most was the willingness of the Trendnet rep to help. He responded within 12 hours (next morning). Although his suggestions didn't do the trick, his willingness to help lead me to persist a little longer. As others have suggested, a FAQ section would help. When I directly connected to the extenders with a cable, I was able to see the settings (20Hz and Channel 1). My router (Cisco Smart-WiFi), has a 'channel width' option and 'channel number' option and both were set to Auto. Once I set them to match the extender (20hz and 1), it connected right away.4 stars is all about the response from Trendnet (Thank you Steve)! 4I'd have great coverage in the wifi deadspot If you're using this to cover a wifi deadspot, you might want to try using a powerline networking wifi extender or something else. This wifi repeater was very spotty for me. On some days, I'd have great coverage in the wifi deadspot, but on other days, I'd get a stronger signal from my router--flaky, slow, and horrible.I don't know if the device is to blame. After all, if you have a dead spot, it's probably environmental or due to a weak antenna on your router. This device cannot overcome those issues; it does have to communicate with your router after all. It's probably better than a laptop or tablet at doing that, but I've found that a weak signal is a weak signal.I eventually tried using one of the HomePlug powerline wifi extenders and that worked surprisingly well, and certainly better than this extender. 2DON'T BUY THIS EXTENDER! WASTE OF TIME. PERIOD. So disappointed with this purchase! Tried to install like the manual instructed, but no luck. Called in and talked to the rep, who walked my husband through the process of installation. After 45 minutes, not only it didn't work, my laptop couldn't even connect to the main internet. Thank goodness I witnessed the last few steps that my husband followed, and undid them to be able to connect my laptop onto the main internet again. I thought maybe my modem was too old, as the rep suggested, so I bought a new modem with the 1-touch WPS setup.button. I was able to set up the modem fine, and am able to connect to it wirelessly with my devices. But there's still some dead spots downstairs in the far corner of the house, so I tried again today doing the 1 touch setup.I followed the instructions, 1st turned on the TRENDNET, then pressed the WPS setup button on the router/modem, and pressed the WPS button on the TRENDNET when it turned yellow. Then waited and waited. It kept flashing green, but never stayed solid green. I turned it off and repeated the process. Same thing. I'm trying to return it, but the 30-day window is over!I'M SO DISAPPOINTED! Now I can't even return it!!!!!! 1I'm pretty techy and an IT dude Honestly the problem w/ this could be me or my network setup. I'm pretty techy and an IT dude, but just could not get this blasted thing to do what it should. Going over all the reviews, the ones that had problems seem to be similar to mine.If you do the site survey and latch onto your existing wireless broadcast this'll be all "hey bro..I got this." You get stoked that you can finally watch those videos, I mean play games, in the bedroom opposite end of the cable box, since everyone's cable runs into a room that's not the center of the house. Then when you get settled in, your mobile device has all the glorious bars, and...nothing. My guess is that it naming it the exact same as your other network and it not allowing you to change the name doesn't play nice w/ wifi devices. After attempting the WPS method several times and the browser setup failing to work at all multiple times..I might've sorta tossed it...gently...onto the floor.I'm gonna just stop being lazy and get an access point to extend my current coverage. 2My smart TV had trouble connecting to the wireless router and ... I've read a lot, and I mean a lot, of reviews on wifi extenders. At some point you just have to make a decision, and I made the right one. My smart TV had trouble connecting to the wireless router and some of the smart functions such as Amazon Prime Video, would not load or would drop off. The TEW-737HRE was the fix for me. I chose to log-in to the unit and do my setup via my laptop. It took less than ten minutes and I was up and running. Now the TV is at 100% signal and I've watched almost all of "The Man In The High Castle' without one bit trouble! All of my other devices, tablets, phones, and VOIP phone have benefitted from the increased signal strength. 5Works fine even with a switch (with my ESXi and Proxmox servers connected) hard wired to it I had purchased this Repeater/extender few years ago. Never really used it consistently till now when I had the need to move (away from my router) and connect my EXSi & Proxmox server (which do not have wireless NIC), to my LAN. I connected a 5 port switch to this unit's Ethernet port. Then connected my two servers to the switch with RJ45 (cat 5) cables. Both my servers are on my LAN now, and working fine. I have not found any reference on Google for somebody connecting a switch to this unit - may be I am the first one !Update - This unit periodically looses connection to my wifi and had to be manually reset - sometimes twice a day. Also it changes IPs of my devices disconnecting them from the internet. Basically brings my internet down. 5Wanted it to work... I have had good luck with TrendNet devices in the past so I thought this would be an easy solution to extend my WiFi network signal strength out to by back-porch / deck. It would work for a short while, then my entire wireless network would stop functioning until I unplugged this device.I have a background in networking and easily worked around the default IP address issue. Why they did not simply program this box to pull an IP address via DHCP is beyond me. Most non-technical people will not be able to get it to work due to this limitation. After several resets, trying to figure out why it was not working, it would no longer reset to defaults. Frustration found it in the trash can. I should have returned it but the slam dunk felt so good... 1Good solution for weak wi-fi signal Solved my weak wifi problem. When properly configured you should get a strong signal using your existing security protocol. Not as easy to configure as stated. I plugged the unit into a wall socket where it could get a strong signal from the router. I needed to plug the unit into a laptop to configure the wifi password (software to do so is included). I found that changing the settings in my router to operate on channel 6 (was set to auto) seems to work best. You will lose 50% of your speed since this is half duplex but my wired speed is 90mbs connected to the router and I am getting 35mbs at some distance from the device which is much better than I was getting from the previous weak signal without the device. This is a nice inexpensive solution for solving a dead spot issue. 5Put it in your room, but not in the living room. Don't use this to bridge two long distance wifi coverages. Based on my experiment with it, it worked better when you bridge one long distance and one short distance. For example, when I placed it in the middle of the wifi router in my living room and my desktop in my bedroom, it didn't perform as expected. However, when I put it near the desktop, it successfully enhanced the signal strength.I tested my network performance on http://speedtest.comcast.net/ with and without the device. With this device, the results showed 4Mbps FASTER download speed, 3Mbps FASTER upload speed, and 12ms SLOWER ping latency in average (note that the results aren't generalizable!). I guess the additional hop using this extender brought about the slower ping latency, but the improvement in download / upload speed is sensible. I'd take it.If you don't expect huge difference in your network performance, it's a pretty good product for the price. 3
