Customer Reviews

Purchased this for a Uniden 980 SSB CB Radio - Midland 18-2442 out-performs this one! Purchased this for a Uniden 980 SSB CB Radio. Seems to work OK for now, but not a lot of people on CB band anymore! On second thought, bought a Midland McKinley and realized I had a sunroof impeeding the expected ground plane of these magnetic mount antennas. I hacked around this by installing a second physical ground wire to the case of the radio, and connected the other end of the ground wire to a ground on the vehicle. I cut the ground wire at about 15-20 feet, or enough wire to reach the battery by going out the side door and around the vehicle for earlier troubleshooting. I then took the excess ground cable/wire and spooled it into a small 6 inch diameter round coil and ziptied. This in essence tends to create an radio frequency "sink", and likely an inadvertent additional ground plane likely solving my ground plane or sunroof problem. The coil of zip tied cabling was coiled near the ground connection of the vehicle and stashed behind the floor center console.PROS1) Adjustable/tunable antenna length, and tuning is required when connecting to a CB radio.2) Cabling length seems adequate.3) Stranded core instead of solid core? See 2018.06.15 note, concerning erratic performance and negated two stars! Additional note and possible solution noted on 2018.06.27; further noted within my second paragraph here.2018.06.15 Have been having inconsistent or erratic SWR caliberation issues since the first day I purchase/received this antenna for my Uniden BC980SSB CB radio. ~1.5-2.3, and after approx. two months usage while caliberating again and spiking 2.5-3.0 SWR and only held a 1.0 SWR while holding the mic outside the window with my index finger up my butt. I should have stopped there but after pulling my finger out of my butt and holstering the mic, SWR has now been permanently at 3.0. Removed and installed LMR400 cabling thinking I had broken the cabling, SWR because erratically slightly better. SWR still being erratic, purchased and installed the older Midland 18-2442 and I now have achieved, for the very first time, almost immediately a perfect 1.0 SWR! NOTE: The Midland 18-2442 looks almost identical, with two hex screws with the only apparent difference RG-58U solid core instead of the Tram's RG-58U stranded core cabling. Supposedly a flexible/stranded core is suppose to be better, but my old timer's knowledge says a solid core is better. (Interesting to note, the Midland's cabling states "RG-58AU Tram-Max"!)2018.06.27 Seem to have negated my fluctuating or erratic SWR and made notes on the accidental apparent solution or hack around within my second paragraph of this review. I have increased one star, as this antenna should perform extremely similar to the Midland 12-2442 now, but have no time for further testing. 4Four Stars Works and holds tight even when breaking the speed limit... which I don't do! 4Works great. Antenna threads together just fine and seems to be very good quality. My CB worked great with this antenna on our weekend trip, even through canyons and over hills. Highly recommended. 5Nice well-made antenna for the money I purchased this for a Whistler TRX 1 scanner radio so I could listen to CB radio on long trips where there's a lot of Truckers around me when I'm driving I was surprised that the radio did very well though picking up UHF frequencies that I couldn't see the reason for buying an actual scanner radio antenna when this one works perfectly well for me I'm not looking to pick up these far away I'm just looking to pick up clearly what's around me within let's say a 10 Mi radius this antenna does the trick for something that's $20 you can't beat it 5Works great, seems very well built Works well for the price. I don t know how people can say the magnet doesn t work. This magnet is so strong it pinched my skin while trying to put it gently onto my jeep. Nice clear signal. Couldn t ask for more. 5Great product Bought for my father he had no issues with assembly or installing. Great product shipped and arrived fast. 5Using it in a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland This is another great CB Antenna that matches up SWR easily and works great with all my radios..Looks nice on the Grand Cherokee also...Here is another one on amazon the works very well , PRESIDENT ELECTRONICS AMUS141 New York Magnetic Mount CB Radio Antenna.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IPXRQZA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 5returned it and got a Wilson instead which has been working great. If it works for your situation it's a ... Magnet was strong enough to hold even on interstate. Was not able to adjust swr low enough as top part was to short. returned it and got a Wilson instead which has been working great. If it works for your situation it's a great low profile antenna. 3Buy it! Inital swr was 3.0 but was able to quickly and easily tune it to a 1.1 on 40 and 1.1 on 1, simply awesome. This was center roof mounted on my wife's car and I asked her if it held up to 80mph wind one her trip to her mother's house, she reported 120mph wind no problems! I know she's crazy, but so is that magnet! For the price its great, cant report on longevity just yet bc its only been 2 weeks but very impressed so far.Update: bought a second one to put on top of my house for a base station antenna to get me by untill I can get a proper one, I have a metal roof of course, took me a min to find the best place for low swr, but once I did it was 1.5 across the board! I'm talking to locals now and picking up some interesting conversations! For 15$ its the best performing antena under 50$ I'm actually shocked it works so well on my roof, and wouldn't have been upset if it didn't, it would have just been a good backup antenna for the wife's car! 5... ago and i have to say it is really great. i live about 4 I got this antenna about a week ago and i have to say it is really great. i live about 4.6 miles from the freeway and i get range from my house to the freeway really clear. So it will go well over 2 miles i would buy this product again. 5
