Customer Reviews

Love this light! I just installed the light today so can't speak as to longevity, but ... I love the look. The original incandescent recessed lights came with a 3" black "baffle" and the light was recessed in the can so if you wanted to blind yourself, you had to actually work at it to see the bright bulb inside. Almost all LED retrofit lights that I have seen, lack any substantive baffle and the bright light is very uncomfortable no matter where you are in the room. So as I have some sloped ceiling, I thought I would try out this gimbal ligt from Torchstar (a company that is new to me). The LED is actually recessed several inches into the fixture and I have solved my glare problem! And it seems to work great as a gimbal mounted LED for sloped ceilings, so much so that I just ordered 14 more (from another site at $14/ea). They say they are rated for 75 watts, and I think that is probably true. (Some sellers exagerate their lights.) The light output is identical to a Par 30 75 watt flood fixture that is in an adjacent can. Color rendition seems to be as advertised, the 2700 degree rated temp, again matching the Par 30 75 watt flood fixture. So I've updated my room and it works just like I want. 5Works, but required drilling holes in my fixture These don't work like many retrofit kits, as the spring loaded clamps require a certain type of housing fixture. Other retrofit kits use simple friction metal clamps to work almost anywhere. To make these spring loaded clamps work in my fixture, I had to drill four holes in the housing, 2 pairs of holes on opposite sides of the inside of the fixture. These holes should be large enough for each hole to fit one end of the spring clamp end. It works, but took a lot more on my end to make these work. Oddly, the same manufacture makes perfectly fitting 4 inch retrofit versions of this product that doesn't require this extra work. Not sure why they don't offer the same product in a 5/6 inch version. 3Great light, almost as easy as changing a light bulb Initially I bought 4 of the 4 inch version as a retrofit for the lights in my stove vent hood. These were selected specifically because the light beam is controlled and adjustable, so I could aim the light at the stove. Installation was very easy. Since the Torchstar fixtures include bezels, I had to remove the old bezels, they were held by two coil springs. The supplied wire harness screws into the old light bulb socket and the new fixture connector plugs right into it. Electrically, that's it.Regarding the new fixture retention, it uses pair of expanding springs, which is different from the original coil springs, but the ceiling cans have provisions for both styles. I just needed to bend two little brackets (no tools needed, just with fingers) into their proper spaces. It was so simple that I just looked inside the first ceiling can to get oriented and did the other three cans without even looking. The new bezels look better than the old, and the light was such a blast (at a fraction of power consumption) that I had to add a dimmer. After this, I decided to retrofit 4 other fixtures elsewhere, this time 6 inch version of the same thing, the job was equally easy. And then I bought 4 more! 12 total, so far.The dimmers which I installed at all locations are Leviton model 6674, I bought them at Home Depot. The combination works together beautifully. 5This worked great to retrofit a very old 'eyeball' can light This worked great to retrofit a very old 'eyeball' can light. In my living room, this light was critically placed in front of a painting by a local artist, so I needed something that would retain the 'spotlight' on this painting, yet eliminate the yellow light producing incandescent fixture. The original fixture was already controlled by a dimmer (Lutron, I believe) on the wall switch. The fixture was extremely easy to replace, even for someone not very competent in this sort of thing. I have other can lights in the room, which because of their height I am having an electrician out to replace. One of those is also on this circuit and, even though the existing dimmer works fine with this light, he has advised that over time the LED fixture may cause premature aging/failure of the dimmer. So I am having him replace the wall switch with an identical looking switch that is rated for LED fixtures. But I am very happy with this Torchstar fixture. If I had need of another 'aimable' fixture, I would have installed two of these, instead of the one. 5Overall Good but a Few Things to Note Generally I'd say the product is quite good. They dim down without flickering, the light is of a uniform intensity over the lens and the light output does seem to meet the stated wattage/lumins.I purchased these for a gabled ceiling where the gimbal function is needed to aim the light essentially perpendicular to the floor. The "gimbals" are just stamped sheet metal so they do not adjust smoothly. Nonetheless with a little "fiddling" you can get them adjusted over a relatively large angular range. I'd recommend adjusting the angles to your approximate setting before going up on a ladder. Then just fine tune it once you've installed the light in the ceiling can.If I recall correctly, be aware that the light does not turn a full 360 degrees on its gimbal, rather you can go about 180 degrees in either a left or right clock direction (in the ceiling plane). Normal to the ceiling plane the light (lens) can be set (tipped) I'd guess up to about 45 degrees.Lastly, I'll note that the retaining spring is quite strong and thus I first "preconditioned" the spring by folding the respective spring prongs into their vertical install position (again, before I was up on a ladder trying the hook the spring prongs into the can's retainer clip). The price point for these lights is a bit higher, but I think worth it for the higher wattage rating. With a gimbal function I found few choices at this light rating and nominal 5/6 inch fixture size. I've only had the lights installed for a short time so I can't speak to their long term reliability/life. 5Perfect color 5000k is nearly identical to the sunlight coming in from the windows next to it. Lights up my fireplace area. PROS:* Perfect color 5000k is nearly identical to the sunlight coming in from the windows next to it. Lights up my fireplace area.* No flickering, just solid light.* Bright! Really helps light up the room making board games and family time work out well.CONS:* Too bright for my 8 foot tall ceilings. I would love if Torchstar could offer a 5-7W version of these. 5Junko, instantly went back: PICTURES DO NOT MATCH PRODUCT Zero stars. These are very cheap. This review is for the flat version, not eyeball. The light face where a recessed ring is, there are plastic tabs over the LED translucent plastic that look ridiculous. If you have these up really high, like 20 foot ceilings, sure they probably will work fine, but if you're like most, these are noticeably cheap. I would not recommend these for residential; cheap commercial yup, no problem. The pictures on the website DO NOT SHOW THE CHEAP PLASTIC TABS ON THE FACE OF THE LIGHT. Clearly the reviews are bogus on this one. Seller reached out, so at least there was that but they completely mis-read my review thinking I ordered the wrong kind [i wanted eyeball]. Wow. 1Beware! Just enough of these lights work so that after hours of installation it would be impossible to turn back and rip them all out no matter how strong that urge is. The Spring has a tendency to come loose from the fixture. After spending one hour Unsuccessfully trying to reattach the Spring to the fixture I used zip ties. The zip ties got the fixture to within about 3/16 of an inch of the ceiling. Totally unacceptable but after an hour I gave up. I would advise anybody buying these pictures to immediately quip the circle at the end of the Spring so that you only have a 90 angle at the end of it. The circle is likely to go inside the can that you are trying to attach the Fixture to. Once this happens the Spring will twist against the fixture and come loose. The Springs are fairly low quality metal and will bend easily once this happens. Once the Springs are bent it is virtually impossible to reattach the Spring to the late fixture. The last fixture that I had I figured out that zip tying the Spring to the fixture would at least partially secure it and hopefully keep it attached to the fixture while installing it on the old can. It worked, but not without a lot of difficulty. Additionally anybody who has installed old trims in Cannes the traditional way, knows that they would be seeing a about a 90 angle in the Spring. These Springs are at a Nearly180 angle. Well that lends itself to a great deal of tension securing the trim to the ceiling, they are also extremely difficult to place into the clips in the can. Buyer beware, these are not Going to be easy to install for the faint of heart. They look fine and seem to perform fine on the ceiling. The gimbal seems to work well and pivots easily in the fixture. 2Very Good LED Fixture. May Well Need A Dimmer. The 5,000K daylight, 950 lumens are really, really intense... especially considering that it's all generated by an energy-hogging 10W. I'm using the fixture as the overhead light in a shower that has white tile allover; and, fortunately, I had already planned to use a dimmer. Operating at 40% of full power provides plenty of photons for showering and shampooing. My dimmer of choice is Leviton's TSL06-1L Toggle Slide with Locator Light (Amazon ASIN: B01M7RTUIO). Nearly completely compatible with this Torchstar fixture --- there is no humming or flickering at any power level, and I have tested the fixture at full power for more than 3 continuous hours, with absolutely no aberration. The exception to complete compatibility of this fixture and dimmer relates to the dimmer's Locator Light (which can be turned on or off). With the Locator Light turned on, there is enough of a current draw that the fixture will not turn off completely, even with the toggle in the off position (remains dimly lit like a nightlight); turn off the Locator Light and the fixture turns off completely.Had to transfer mounting springs from fixture that I was replacing to properly install Torchstar fixture in existing can, but once transfer was done the rest of the installation took about 15 seconds. Fixture is secure and flush against the shower ceiling, and the "eyeball" is fully positionable. 5Easy to install, great light, great value. I bought these to replace standard down lights in my wife's art studio. She wanted control of the direction of the light. My existing cans (housing) are 6 inches wide. They went in quickly and easily, barely 5 minutes to change 6. There is a screw in adapter to accommodate standard bulb fixtures. The springs are strong and pull the fixture tight to the ceiling. The ring covers the housing properly so they look good. The head swivels almost all the way around, about 350 degrees and can be adjusted from straight down to about 15 degrees relative to the ceiling. The beam spread is about 40 degrees, something like a wide spot or narrow flood, of course that depends on the distance from the wall, the further, the wider. The light it a nice warm white, similar to incessant or halogen. But like all LEDs a little whiter, and I don't recommend mixing LEDs and incadecant or halogen in the same room, you will see the difference. The wall wash is even with no star pattern you sometimes get with halogen spots. I have a standard dimmer and had no problems. If you dont have a dimmer and want to add one, i recommend looking for one that is made for LEDs. Dont buy a cheap one, they will buzz and possibly flicker. LEDS, because of their low power consumption can challenge cheap dimmers, good ones provide the necessary power to make them dim properly. There are not a lot of choices for swivel LED heads in this price range. These are an excellent choice and I'm very happy with them. 5
