Customer Reviews

A life saver! What a life saver! I work remotely and when I got my new laptop it had 1 USB. 2 USB-Cs and an aux port...that was it. I usually work with dual 22 inch monitors as well as a wireless keyboard, mouse and a bunch of other peripherals. I purchased a USB-C hub that worked but got extremely hot - to the point that I was afraid to use it. I ordered this and couldn't be happier with it.I could easily hook up a 3rd (and maybe 4th) monitor and have 4 USB ports left available. Having something like this increases productivity 10-fold for me. The top of the docking station also has small rubber strips so I rest my laptop on top of the docking station to keep it out of the way. Great purchase. It is definitely pricey, but you get what you pay for! I would definitely buy this again.5Great Docking station and easy set upI was looking for a docking station as I had just started a new business and needed a way to connect my laptop to the two monitors at my desk. I had performed a lot of research and found that this Targus had great reviews and would be everything that I needed. It was over $50 more at Best Buy for this exact same docking station so I purchased it on Amazon. I was worried that it may be flawed, but I was able to get my whole my laptop setup to my monitors and printer fairly seamlessly I did have to go to the Targus website, find the item I purchased and download some software, but that was easy.I have had the docking station for a few months now and I have not really had any issues with it. The only problem I have is that once in a while when I plug my laptop back in, the other monitors do no register. However, if I restart my computer this quickly resolves the problem.5Works on Ubuntu 19.04 with DisplayLinkSuper happy to have found this dock for my laptop running Linux (specifically Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo). All the USB pass-through functionality works straight out of the box but you will need to install DisplayLink for any dock connected monitors to work. Being able to keep it under my laptop is perfect for me since it aligns the bottom of my laptop screen with the bottom of my second monitor. Added bonus is that it improved the cooling of my laptop too. I cannot say for sure whether it will work for 4k but I can definitely confirm that it supports 1440p and I assume it will indeed pass a 4k signal. Transferring files from my laptop's built in SD card reader to an external hard drive ran at the max speed rating of the SD card (160 MB/s) and reading off the external drive (USB-C ssd) did run at 520-540 MB/s so the dock doesn't seem to be a bottleneck. One minor complaint, having it connected hijacks all the audio even if don't have any audio out device connected to the dock (i.e. cannot use the laptop speakers). I assume there is a workaround for this but it hasn't been a problem for my workflow yet so I haven't taken the time to search more into this and it gave me an excuse to order new computer speakers which arrive in a few days (Monday September 9, 2019). I will update then if I run into any problems using external speakers connected to the dock. I highly doubt there will be any problems since it works just fine with headphones in the 3.5mm jack on the dock. Something to note about this, if you have a USB audio device with a headphone jack (such as a Yeticaster mic) then that will take priority over the 3.5mm jack.ProsWorks with Ubuntu (with DisplayLink)Good instructions for installation (including Ubuntu specific instructions)Supports laptop and improves coolingFast data pass-throughConsHijacks all audio output5Works Just Fine for Me!With some trepidation, I ordered this docking station to use with my new HP Envy m6-1125dx 64-bit Windows 8 laptop. After using business laptops with custom-made docking stations for years, I hadn't thought too much about the process of finding a docking station for this consumer laptop. As it turned out, it took a bit of a search. I learned about the latest generation of "universal" docking stations which are made possible by USB 3.0, as I understand it. Two reps at HP's Boise Sales Office (who were great, by the way) told me that the Targus ACP71USZ would work with my laptop (which has a USB 3.0 port), in spite of a review to the contrary on the HP website page describing the unit. In fact, they said, the Targus unit was connected to the same laptop in the "playpen" in their office, and they could vouch for the fact that it worked. So, I ordered it from Amazon. When it arrived, I followed advice others had offered in other reviews: (1) update your USB 3.0 host controller driver (mine was current); (2) download the latest drivers from Targus or Displaylink (ignore the CD that comes with the unit). Turns out DisplayLink had a newer version than Targus itself did, so I downloaded and installed it before connecting the unit to my laptop.Contrary to other reviews, the docking station DID have a power tip to fit my laptop, which was a relief, so the laptop charges when it's connected to the dock. Everything else (wireless keyboard and mouse, audio, printer) is powered through the USB 3.0 cable which connects to the dock. Once connected, the laptop recognized the dock, and everything worked just as I hoped, with no noticeable loss in performance!I like the fact that the docking station will accommodate any laptop for which there is a power tip, so this should be the last docking station I need to buy. The unit itself is very well made, and reflects a nice design. It even fits nicely within my monitor stand! Finding the power tips is a bit tricky (the HP reps were helpful here too); you flip up a door on top of the unit to reveal a compartment with 8 different tips. All in all, armed with the advice from previous reviewers and the HP reps, it was a piece of cake, proving it pays to do your research, I guess. Judging from the reviews, I guess the ACP71USZ will work with some laptops and not others, and in the final analysis there is really only one way to find out: order it from a store with a reasonable return policy and try it out!UPDATE: A little more than a year later, and the Targus unit is still going strong, with no problems over the past year. My Windows 8 computer recognizes it as part of the system, and even tells me when firmware updates are available, which was unexpected! This little unit still gets five stars from me!UPDATE 10/06/14: After working perfectly for 1.5 years, my external monitor (attached to the dock) stopped working. Attaching the monitor directly to the computer revealed that the monitor was working just fine. A visit to the Targus web site showed the same driver already installed. On a hunch, I visited the DisplayLink (whose logo appears on the product) web site and found a new driver. Installed it; problem solved. Lesson here: check BOTH the Targus and DisplayLink web sites for driver updates. By the way, tried running "Update Driver" from inside Device Manager, and it pointed me toward the Targus site, but NOT the DisplayLink site.UPDATE 01/18/16 Two years now, and aside from the driver lesson learned that I described in the previous update, it's been nothing but smooth sailing with this well-designed little dock! I'd still give it five stars! The dock is on my mind currently because up until now I've used a 24" external LED monitor, and my laptop monitor as needed. Now I'm thinking of adding a second 24" monitor, using the Targus dock. I'm not entirely sure of the best way to do that, since my current monitor uses an HDMI cable, and there is only one HDMI port on the dock. I'm sure a little study will turn up the answer to the cabling question.5Works great with some compatibility issues...This USB-C dock works as advertised. Using it to hook up my Sager NP 9876. If you know how big that laptop is it's not moving too often but it's nice to not have to play with 4-5 wires when you do.Those that are giving it bad reviews because they don't have a displayport enabled USB-C "docking" port or a laptop that isn't MTS should have done more research. It actually comes with a USB-A adapter as well if your laptop doesn't have a USB-C port as it's "docking" port line mine does. The important part is such a docking port is needed for more bandwidth than your traditional USB ports. If you try to hook it up to any old USB-A or C port it sort of works but is very jittery and video resolution is lowered or scrambled. It has plenty of ports for everything you need in the back and offers 2 easy to access usb (1 USB-A and one C) ports on either side of it.Compatibility is hit and miss with most USB hubs like this but assuming you aren't hooking up to many some weird combination of adapters 99% of things should work. I had an odd issue because it's hooked up from a KVM switch which has it's own USB compatibility issues exasperated when used in tandem.DVI to Display Port adapters don't seem to play too nice with it either so try to used pure display port connections. That once again could just be a compatibility issue with my converter though.4Works like magicPaired this with my Lenovo Thinkpad T490. The USB-C connection works like magic. Once cord for power, ethernet, and two monitors. I especially liked the option to use hdmi cables for both monitors. The unit is much smaller than I pictured. You can lean your laptop up against it like a traditional docking station. It also seems to work well to perch your laptop on top of it for added cooling.CONS: The only thing I didn't like is that the USB-C to USB-C cable that comes with the unit is very think and doesn't bend very easily. This created an issue for me since the tension on the cord was pushing on the usb-c socket in the laptop. I was worried it was going to loosen or bend it.5product does not work and no support from targusWhen plugged into the laptop, the Dock is not recognized by windows. Also, it is not displaying the monitor(s), but Ethernet, keyboard, and mouse work. Called Targus support the product is so new they are unable to help. They had to escalate to their engineers, who are also not familiar with the product. The only contact from the engineers has been via email, and who have no idea what the problem may be. We have tried the dock on three various laptops (different vendors) with the same bad results. Bought this product and it is still not usable after a week.Targus USB-C Universal Docking Station1The RMA replacment failed within a couple weeks.I have this surprisingly small docking station hooked up to Gigabit ethernet, a 4k 60hz display port monitor, and a couple other usb peripherals. It provides all the power necessary to charge my 2017 Macbook Pro while under heavy use. In short if you are looking for a single cable solution this is the way to go. What I haven't tried is connecting a second 4k 60hz monitor through the dock as well. It is supposed to be able to push dual 4k 60hz monitors or a single 5k 60 hz along with the other peripherals.Where this differentiates itself is that it has the best of all worlds. There are other cheaper alternatives that can power the macbook pro but cannot drive a 4k monitor @ 60 hz (most do 4k @ 30hz which is a little choppy to my eyes). The alternatives that do 4k @ 60hz only provide 60w power delivery which isn't enough to charge the macbook while under load. Additionally most docks that can do 4k @ 60 hz don't include ethernet.Pros: * This is fully detached from the laptop and you can sit it somewhere else so long as you have an thunderbolt 3 cable long enough (you should probably use one of the active/more expensive tb3 cables if the length is over 1.5 ft). Some other hang off the side and dont work well in my environment. * Dual 4k @ 60 hz * Gigabit Ethernet * Power Delivery @ 85 wattsThe only hiccup I have had so far was after plugging/unplugging from my laptop many times my ethernet switch got confused and refused to talk with the dock. I rebooted the ethernet switch and then all was well. This was not an issue with the dock but rather my switch.UPDATE:After 5 months of working flawlessly it started acting up. First was monitor flickering which eventually degraded into being completely broken (not delivering power, ethernet not working, external monitor not recognized and external keyboard not recognized). I went through Targus support (which their online interface is pretty terrible but the people were nice and helpful). Eventually they had me ship the dock back to them (at my expense) and they shipped me a out a replacement.I just got the new one in and was experiencing some monitor flickering coming from the display port connection on the device. I switched it over to a Thunderbolt 3 -> DisplayPort cable and am using the TB3 port on the dock and that is gone. When this device is working properly its fantastic, however there are some obvious quality issues.UPDATE: Nov 12 2018After a few weeks of usage of the replacement it has completely failed in the same way the original docking station did. Nothing works and it is effectively useless. With the quality issues I would not recommend anyone purchase this unless you like expensive paper weights.1"Remotely taxing" includes things like opening the Start menuI have two 28" 4k displays hooked up to this thing and, true to Targus's word, they run at 60Hz. The machine I'm using with this dock is a Lenovo ThinkPad E570 (15" 1080p display) with an i7-7500U and a GeForce GTX 950.The problem is that, if you do anything remotely taxing on those displays, there are compression artifacts or the refresh appears to drop to 30Hz. "Remotely taxing" includes things like opening the Start menu, moving a window around, maximizing/minimizing windows, clicking through emails in Outlook, typing in Word, and simply utilizing Microsoft Remote Desktop/RemoteApp. Simple office stuff, really. Also, the NIC's transfer rates appear to top out at 20 MB/s (yes, I mean megabytes, not megabits), making it useless for transferring large files.I won't even get started on Linux support. DisplayLink provides drivers for Ubuntu, and they only support up to 16.04 LTS (which is fine, since the other versions have shorter support lifecycles anyway), but good luck getting two 4k displays working without ripping apart config files, and good luck using anything other than Unity. My desk layout is 28"-laptop-28", and it works beautifully in Windows 10 build 1709 as long as I don't actually use them, but doing actual work on the external displays is a chore and is quite laggy. If this laptop had Thunderbolt I'd have gotten an eGPU instead.2This is not a box of rocksThe first unit I ordered sounded like a box of rocks when I shook it. So I sent it back and got another. Only then did I realize there is a lid under which are various power connectors for different kinds of computers. The photos for this item should show that feature. Who'd have thought? Now that I have the second unit, none of the power connectors fit my Asus Vivobook S510UA. I contacted customer support, and they say that model number is insufficient...that 44 options come up on their system for that model number. So I will probably return this item and buy something entirely different. Certainly not Targus. I give two starts on faith that the product would actually work if I could connect it to my computer. I give zero starts to marketing and customer service.UPDATE: Another call to Targus with correct computer model, and they say they don't know if the dock will work with my computer. They will have to test it and get back to me...sometime in the future. My rating stays to two stars.2
