Works as advertisedThere's not much to say about this product- it does what it's designed to do, secure a monitor (or laptop) to a desk. I bought several of them to secure monitors I was using at a tradeshow so I could leave my booth throughout the day and overnight without worry. No problems. I suppose someone could still rip off your equipment if they had no concern for ripping out the VGA port, but at that point there's really nothing you can do to stop the thief. 5Not for all laptops...otherwise great device!!!This is a very well designed device with pretty high quality parts. It also comes with a nice set of accessories to fully secure the cable. The only trouble with this device is that most new laptops do not have threaded connector for VGA cables or use HDMI/DisplayPort; thus, you cannot secure this device to these laptops. I use this to lock my Dell E-series docking station to the desk and use another portable cable lock for the laptop. This allows me to undock without playing with any locking devices. You can also lock down VGA projectors that have threaded connectors. With the recent drop in prices this is a steal. If you have the right device then this is highly recommended. 4siren disengages while lockedThe wire can be slightly pulled on, and the siren disengages while locked. Bummer, really thought this would be useful. 1A plethora of uses...!I use these as anti-disturbance devices...on windows, doors...other objects I want left alone. They work quite well. Very reliable.It would be interesting to find a unit like this that uses the wi-fi net in a home to alert the owner over their smart-phone, tablet or lap top to the activation of the alarm. I would think such circuits are fairly economical just now. 5Received the "DEFCON 1" model (made 15 or more years ago), not the current DEFCON 1 Ultra"I received an "old stock" item from the seller "TRWs Treasures".While the Amazon barcode on the package indicates that the item is a Targus DEFCON 1 "Ultra". The package contains (and is labeled) DEFCON 1 (not the "Ultra"). Before I realized that it was the "old" model I accidentally opened the package. Inside I found a 9 volt battery dated 07/02 (see photo). This unit was manufactured at least before the year 2002.This old model DEFCON 1 has:1) A three digit combination lock2) One level of sensitivity when armed. This is a pain when trying to unlock the unit.3) A steel cable.The newer model DEFCON 1 "Ultra" shown in the photo, described in the "about", and listed on the Targus web site has:1) A four digit combination lock.2) Two levels of sensitivity - four and eight seconds. This gives you time to unlock the unit before the alarm goes off.3) A Kevlar reinforced cable.4) Two "Arches" molded in the plastic above the alarm status button/LED. 1Cheaply madeI thought this would be a good way to secure a monitor, but the entire thing feels very cheap. The combination lock didn't roll smoothly and the method of changing the combination worked when it shouldn't -- in other words, anyone could open this lock with a screwdriver. 1Great for digital nomadsGreat for digital nomads: simple, compact, quick to deploy, quick to store.It's probably enough to stop a snatch-and-run theft or an opportunistic thief. It will not stop a determined or prepared thief. 5Doesn't deserve one starJust plain doesn't work at all. First, it seems the directions for changing the combo are wrong. The screw won't turn as indicated, so the combo can't be changed from 00000 (unless there is a hidden secret). Second, once you plug the connector into the lock (it goes together very easily), it will never unlock. Period. Now, they've had plenty of time to amend the instructions. I suspect the entire production is defective in design.Let's see. What's wrong with this picture. 1. The combo will always be 00000. (That'll stop a thief). 2. You'll never be able to unlock the lock. Talk about secure!At least I tried it before attaching it to the PC! And Amazon is good about supplying a return postage label. Why are they trying to sell this junk? I got two different no-brands that are fine, and the name brand is the bad one! 1Really nice lock, the alarm function works really goodReally nice lock, the alarm function works really good; but not advised to be used in crowded office environment if you are not going to be close to it, if the alarms goes off it soon gets pretty annoying. 5Great For A Day At The BeachI travel for vacation as much as I can and like to go to beaches to get into the water. The problem is that I was always looking at the beach to see if anyone was stealing my beach bag. Now I don't have to worry! If anyone is crazy enough to pick up a bag with an alarm hanging on it, they're stupid. There are plenty of other bags to steal that don't have alarms - why take mine? The secret is to weave the cable through the handles and zippers of the bag nice and tight so they won't be tempted to reach in. And, if there is something to anchor it to, like a beach chair or umbrella, that'll make it even more difficult to steal your bag. We were just in Mexico with some friends and the cable was long enough to loop through a few bags. 5
