A return, a replacement, a happy customer. I had heard of Super Talent prior to seeing this USB drive...but as far as I was aware, they were one notch lower than Coby on the Electronics TotemPole. I should tell you that I had to return one of these after it stopped working mysteriously. I wasn't ejecting it, it wasn't being mistreated...I was playing MP3's off of it on my computer and suddenly it was no more. That said, the company was quite good about the returns process, and one first class stamp later (this thing is TINY) I had a new USB drive.CONSTRUCTIONLet's start with construction. I have no worries about this breaking! I keep the new one on my keychain, and it has taken being in my pocket every day quite well. Although it is small, the metal casing seems quite durable. That said I do not hang my keys off of it when I am using it, I purchased a quick release chain for that.QUALITYI have used this in multiple devices, and apart from the first failure it has done very well. I have used to for installing operating systems (fast), transferring files (fast) and also storing data from my xbox (flawless). This is just as fast as any other USB drive I have owned, with the added bonus of being tiny!WHY 4 STARS??- Small (+)- Fast (+)- Durable (+)- Had to RMA the first one (-)OVERALLI would definitely recommend this USB drive - it's compact and apart from my first mishap quite reliable. If Super Talent hadn't of been an easy company to deal with, this review would have been quite different, but a 1 week RMA process was quite a nice surprise! 4Small but thick, runs hot, very tight out-of-spec fit into USB ports, very slow The thing measures 2.8 x 1.2 cm in size (not including the protruding key chain hole), and so it is very small, but is surprisingly thick at slightly over 3mm thick.The contact area for the connectors measures approximately 2.5mm thick - which is not within the specs for USB Type A plugs (they should be just slightly over 1.3mm thick, most are slightly under 2mm thick - see reference in the comments section). The metal plate backing is too thick, and this is why this drive has such a tight fit, as many people have noted in their reviews. I used to carry a thinner USB flash drive that was slightly under 2mm thick, but lost it recently, and the old drive was a perfect fit.You have to be careful inserting this flash drive into USB ports, because it will for sure expand and loosen up the USB port openings for other in-spec USB plugs.The thing runs VERY HOT to the touch when you are transferring files to it. Hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch, maybe not enough to burn you. It cools down when it is at rest.One might expect a flash drive that runs hot to be really fast - not the case here. This was the slowest of three miniature USB flash drives that I tested, the others being the Verbatim Tuff N' Tiny 16GB and the Patriot Memory Direct flex 16GB. Transfer speeds on my HP netbook were under 3MB/sec (averaging 2.9MB/sec), and it takes about 1 hour to fill up the 15.2GB (16,340,992,000 bytes) on this drive.The thing comes with a tiny key chain. My previous USB drive came with a very thin braided nylon lanyard, which I prefer.Also, this drive does not have a LED light to tell you when it is on or not.All in all, although the footprint of this USB flash drive is much smaller than my previous drive, it's thickness and tight fit with USB ports and the heat it gives off when being loaded with data are definite downsides and make this a less than desirable flash drive, at best a mediocre and imperfect choice.I should note that I got the 16GB silver version.So far it has not lost data, which is the only reason not to give it a one star rating. I'll update this review if anything happens. Flash drives do fail sooner or later, they don't have a long life cycle like hard disc drives. A flash drive that runs as hot as this one while loading as slowly as it does suggests that there are probably some internal electrical failures already, and the heat makes it more likely that the internal microscopic solder joints will break sooner. 2Last one lasted 8 years so im back again... I bought this same flash drive back in 2008 when it first came out, it was the worlds smallest drive according to popular science magazine and i loved that drive. it finally died this year in 2016 because i unknowingly plugged it into a shorted usb port. I had that drive for so long i actually grew sentiment towards it and decided two of them this time. they're so small and fit perfectly on my keys. Im a computer technician so i like to always carry small multi tools and my software tools with me in case i ever get the chance to help someone out with their computer. I usually carry a windows 7 bootable iso on one drive and the other is used for anti virus programs and such. they both work perfectly so far and have not had any issues yet, i hope these last just as long as the last one. 5Super SMALL Talent This is definitely the smallest thumb drive I've owned (physical size, not memory). It's almost too small to be convenient as I tend to forget where I left it. The outside of the nickel version is really handsome, but I've noticed some slight wear on the back of the USB contacts after using it for a few weeks. This is probably due to the way it fits in most USB ports; there's definitely more force required to get this drive into the computer.Data transfer is about on par with most other flash drives I've used; I'm not a stickler for high speed file movement anyway. The storage size for the Pico-C is pretty good. 16gb was enough space for most applications I could think of. 32gb seemed like too much space, after all, the more space you have on a drive, the more crap gets dropped in it.The chain that came with it was pretty cheesy, one of those aluminum-balls-on-a-wire things. I didn't want to take the chance of it separating and losing all my school work, so I made one using a set of needle-nose pliers and part of a worn out electric guitar string (Gibson Mediums).There is no flashy activity light, and honestly, where would they put it?CAUTION: Do not buy this drive if you lose things easily. I stopped in the middle of writing this review to compare its size to something, and spent 10 minutes trying to find it...still looking. 5Great little USB if you get a good one I purchased 4 of these little 8GB USB drives recently.I was immediately impressed by their size and performance. The USB drive has a very sturdy appearance, and read / write speeds are much faster than other USB drives I've used.Out of the 4 that I ordered, I found one to be defective. I haven't had any problems reading or writing files to any of them, but one of the drives caused my pioneer CDJ-400 to malfunction when I used it for music storage and playback. Upon further investigation, I determined that this ONE drive drew more current than any other usb drive, suggesting that it is defective.It's a bit of a crapshoot with these things - if you get a good one, hooray! Compact size, great performance. If you get a bad one, you're out $15 if you got the 4GB, lost $20 if you got 8GB, $30 for the 16GB, or as much as $70 for the 32GB. Apparently they don't have the quality control thing figured out at Super-Talent just yet.I've recently heard many bad things about USB flash drives in general from various people, and coupled with my own experiences, and I've learned that there are many BAD usb products out there. This one is OK. Some are good, some are bad.75% of the super talent pico drives I purchased are functional. I've also tried the nano USB "plug and forget" drive (also known as MosKeyto) - 50% of them were defective (out of 2). Another product I've tried is the PNY 4GB - $12 at wal-mart. It works (100% - 1 works out of 1 purchased), tried and true, although much slower than the super talent pico.Moral of the story:I believe this may be a good product, but don't trust it! Once you receive yours, run a couple tests. Does it read and write OK? If you plug it in with other USBs on a hub, will your computer say "too much current" when the pico is in? Compare it to other drives. If everything is ok, you may have found a good one. 4Small, Durable, and Inexpensive. Just what I needed. I am an IT professional and, like many computer-savvy individuals, I have been branded as the go-to guy for all computer and computer-related issues my friends and family encounter. I purchased this USB drive (32GB nickel-plated version) in early 2012 after one of my coworkers, responding to my complaints about needing to acquire such a product, showed me his and described its features to me. With the intent of utilizing it for my everyday work and troubleshooting, as he did, I immediately partitioned it and loaded it up with a whole suite of portable applications, software installers, references, and general IT tools. I even went as far as to put a USB-bootable Linux distro on one partition. It has been 2 years since then and I have used this USB drive extensively. these are my findings.Short and sweet:+Small size+Extremely durable+Low price per GB=Typical USB 2.0 speeds=Slightly less capacity than advertised (this is normal, see below)=No special features (What is advertised is what you get)-Plating chips off over time-Fits a little snugly-Heats up after extended useIn Depth:+SIZE: Size is aproximately 1" x 1/2" x 1/8" (with hole for chain adding 1/8" to length). Fits easily onto a keychain or necklace. Although it does come with a small chain, I never used it asd I prefered to put it on my keyring or wear it on a chain.+DURABILITY: This bad boy is mad of metal, and it is SOLID. In the 2 years since i bought this USB drive, it has taken a serious beating. It has been dropped, stepped on, thrown around, submerged in water, banged, dinged, and been subject to every otherv form of abuse you can think of, and yet it still works like I bought it yesterday. Even the constant plugging/unplugging hasn't worn the pins down yet.+PRICE: When I bought this drive it was $42 for 32GB, which at the time i thought was not a bad deal at all considering the features (size, durability, capacity, etc.). Now, it seems to hover between $25 and $30 - A HECK of a deal in my opinion.=SPEED: Typical USB 2.0 speeds. In benchmarks i've gotten up to 20 MB/s, but realistically i think i usually see about 8-12 MB/s . Speed has been pretty consistent, and after 2 years I still haven't seen any noticable loss of read/write speed from wear caused by excessive writing of data.=CAPACITY: Advertised as 32GB, but due to that manufacturers use the SI System (1 kilo = 1000) for advertising and computers use the Binary system (1 kilo - 1024), the actual size is 30.23GB. As this is typical for thumb drives, hard drives, SD cards, etc., I can hardly fault it. Besides, it isn't too big of a loss and 30GB is still plenty of storage space.=FEATURES: Nothing special, no bells and whistles, no LED lights, no hardware encryption - none of that. This is exactly as advertised - a simple, yet small and durable USB drive.-PLATING CHIPS OFF: Both the silver and nickel versions scratch easily, and the nickel version shows fingerprints like any other glossy surface. I do not remember exactly how long it took, but the nickel plating does wear down over time, given enough wear. This is not too much of an issue for me, as the metal under the plating is matte silver in color and doesn't look half bad. My drive, after so much wear, actually is starting to show a copper hue on the corners, although I can't say whether that's just discoloration from all it has been through or if the metal has actually worn down.-TIGHT FIT: It does fit a little tightly in some USB ports, at first, but contrary to other reviewers experiences I have not yet encountered a USB port that it physically wouldn't fit in due to being to big. Over time, the edges have worn down a little and it actually fits fine now.-HEAT: When writing to the drive over a longer period of time, it can get hot. Hot enough to hurt a little when removing, but not hot enough to burn the skin. This doesn't seem to effect its operation at all.Summary:Truly one of the best USB 2.0 thumb drives you can get in terms of size and durability. I've seen smaller, but none as durable. If you're looking for a small thumb drive to fit on a key chain or necklace, with a reasonable capacity and without too much concern for write speed, then I would HIGHLY recommend you give this one a look. If speed is a major concern, look for a USB 3.0 thumb drive instead. 5Wish I could afford ten of these. Three will do for now. I admit I am a sucker for very small, bright, shiny things, and these are about the brightest, shiniest, and smallest usb drives you'll find. I have an 8GB and a 16GB and am picking up another 16GB drive in about five minutes when I get back to my shopping cart. You could carry a handful of these around on your key ring and nobody would even pick up that you were a complete geek with a pocket full of thumb drives! Instead you have these little sparkly metal rectangles that could be, like, art or something.The drives themselves are virtually indestructible. I mean, I suppose a sledge hammer might do one in, but otherwise you can drool on it, sweat on it, spit on it or dunk it in your coffee and it will still work when you plug it into your computer. You could sit on it and probably even step on it at low velocities without hurting it.The only drawback I can see to this drive is that it might be a bit too small for some. I keep all of mine on a clip that stays on a wallet chain, so I always know where they are, but if you don't keep it attached to something, it could disappear fairly easily. I suspect a cat might find these as entertaining to look at as I do. They do heat up during data transfer but so will any usb drive--most of the others are insulated by all that big ugly plastic.Edited to add: I should note that I've used these drives almost exclusively with a MacBook Pro and never had a problem getting my machine to see them. Macs should be able to read FAT32 formatted drives of all kinds. Reformatting can correct problems, which may indicate that the drive was not properly formatted at the factory. Mass production being what it is, it is not surprising that some bum drives get sold. That said, I just got my new 16GB drive (sporting a deep bronze-silver finish that is even more seductive than the bright silver ones are), and it showed up on my desktop as soon as I plugged it in. And it is true that it's a snug fit. Honestly, to me that feels like quality; cheap stuff rattles around. Maybe usb ports also differ in real-world specs. Me, I like the solidity of this little bit of huge storage space.Thus, I still cannot think of one thing to complain about. I currently carry a library of over 500 books in my watch pocket; I will soon be adding a bunch of photos and films. What do you have to lose? Well now you can carry it with you on a tiny piece of glinting metal. Or several. I recommend several. 5It was immediately accepted and the files played beautifully. Nice looking.The speed test was straightforward with no excessive heat generation.After the speed test I transferred a few video files to it and popped it into the USB socket on my new HDTV. I think it'll be fast enough for my needs, but it's really not all that fast considering you can get a 64GB microSD card for under $30 with 4x the performance. Lasted for a couple of months. I used it moderately throughout a semester at school (approximately 3-5 times a week). I commuted on a bicycle every day so that may have caused my keys to jangle around more than the average person. The stunning gold color faded after a month (again, might have been my other keys that polished off the coating).Ultimately, the casing came apart and rendered it broken. I'm pretty rough with my stuff so I wasn't too disappointed.Transfer speeds were as I would have expected from a 2.0 flash drive. Nothing spectacular. 3
