Customer Reviews

Neat little stud finder... Be forewarned, even though the picture shows 4 stud finders, you only get one. And like another poster mentioned, if you get yourself some small powerful magnets from a hardware store, you essentially have the same functionality. However, because you get this big plastic ring around the magnet, you actually have something to hold onto as you are moving the device around on your wall. Plus, it is kind of cute to see the center piece "snap" to attention when you are over a nail or a screw. Also, it becomes its own storage container that you can easily find again. Try finding your smaller magnets after they stick to something when you put them away. Just barely strong enough to not slide down a wall when centered over a nail in a stud. 4Best studfinder on the market It's a trivial little thing, really just a magnet and indicator stick... but it works.Remember that it doesn't find studs, what it finds is metal. Usually the screws attaching the wallboard to the studs. In the case of plaster (for which this studfinder is probably the only one that actually works), it finds the tiny little tacks that attach the lathe to the studs. Once you find one you can shift left and right, up and down and try and find a line of tacks or screws, this will be your stud. This one works on my parent's house that's all plaster and lathe. If this one doesn't work for you, most likely no magnetic studfinder is going to. You'll need to try some other technique. 5easy and fun to use I love this thing! It is very easy (and surprisingly fun) to use. I have an old house with plaster walls, and the Studpop works very well. It sometimes takes a little bit of effort to find a stud because of the thick walls, but once the magnet finds the first spot, it's easy to find the rest just be adjusting over about 16 inches. I like that it both finds the stud and tells me where the nails are, so I can avoid hammering or drilling and hitting a nail. As an example of my most recent successful use: I had a closet rod that was attached just to the plaster, and was already pulling out. This little tool made it easy to move the bar over a couple of inches to attach to the stud. When I bought the house, the seller suggest that I "invest in a good stud finder" because of messing up the plaster by nailing and hanging heavy things. Based on the reviews, I decided to try this out rather than "investing" in something more expensive, thinking I'd probably end up having to spend more. I did end up having to spend more, but only because I had to buy a few more of these as gifts for the family and friends that saw it in action while helping me get the new house set up. 5This product is a champ! I needed to install some grab bars in an all-tile shower and my electronic stud sensor did not feel reliable through the subway-style tile - it was giving inconsistent results. This StudPop worked flawlessly through the tile and backerboard. It easily found the screws in the studs, allowing me to draw verticals and flawlessly anchor the grab bars into the studs. No batteries, feels very reliable because does not depend on some electronic signal processing. The studpop detected the irregular stud placement on the front of my shower, preventing me from drilling holes through the tile where there was no supporting stud.Great product!!A couple of tips if you are doing what I did -1. Make an "X" with masking or painters tape where you want to drill and mark your drill hole on the tape. The tape will hold your bit in place and keep it from skidding as you drill into your tile.2. Don't use a regular drill bit or the "hammerdrill" function on your drill. Use a tile/glass bit (it has a spade-shaped tip) or at least a hardened carbide bit. The tile bit goes through porcelain/ceramic tile like butter. 5Shockingly and surprisingly good This stud finder is a great invention for drywall, but the real test is whether it would work for my 85-year-old textured lath and plaster walls. None of the pricey electronic stud finders that I have tried work reliably on lath and plaster because they try to find the stud by looking for changes in underlying density that the plaster routinely masks. Both drywall and lath are secured to the studs by screws or nails so the key issue is whether this device has a strong enough magnet to reliably detect the smaller more distant nails used to secure the lath to the studs.I went to the hallway -- pop, mark, pop, mark, pop, mark, pop, mark; all the marks were 16" apart (the standard distance between studs). To the kitchen: pop, mark, pop, mark; again 16" apart. [Hint: Mark the center of the range in which the device stands up and keep in mind that not all the lath nails are centered on the stud.] This inventor did what he said - almost* -and my hat is off to him.*The "almost" is because the StudPop is guaranteed to work on tile but failed to work on my bathtub tiles. The stud was continually erect, probably responding to the metal wiring under the tile used to lay the grout. Tile secured in other ways may allow it to work, and this is a very minor drawback.Another reviewer claimed a problem with lath and plaster. Chances are that he didn't follow the sweeping motion shown in the instructions to zero in on the stud nail, or less likely his had a defective magnet. If you have lath and plaster walls, this device will work well on them provided you pretend to "paint" the walls with the sweeping motion shown in the instructions to find the nails. 5Fantastic For Finding Studs In Older Homes With Thicker Walls Finding a stud in an older 1940's home where the walls are lath and plaster and thicker than the more modern 1/2" to 3/4" thinner drywall was always a nightmare. We tried so many different electronic stud finders in the $25.00-$40.00 price range over the years, but none of them work properly when the walls are not an even sheet of thin drywall. Our plaster and lath walls are not even in thickness, but rather 3/4" to over an inch thick in parts. The outside walls are even thicker being a cement type plaster over some actual layer of a cement type base. I purchased this Studpop magnetic stud finder based on the description that it will work on sheetrock (all studfinders work on this thin sheet), plaster (hardly any studfinders work on thicker plaster), lath and tile. This great tiny super strong magnetic stud finder works and works well! Even on 1 inch thick cement type plaster, that little popper snaps straight up when it finds the stud. When the walls are this thick, it won't stick to the wall as it will when the walls are only 1/2" to 3/4" thick, but that popper works perfectly! I only wish I would have found this Studpop, 3 stud finders ago- I could have saved all that wasted money. With no batteries, no calibrations needed, no mistakes ever, this is the best stud finder money can buy- and the best part is you don't need much money! The only warning on the package is, that the magnetic field can be harmful to pacemaker wearers- and my husband has a pacemaker/defibrillator, so I do all the studfinding. The magnetic field is really strong to be able to find nails buried in our thicker old cement type plaster walls. This is the only studfinder you'll ever need and what I love best about this 5 STAR studfinder is that Studpop is made in the USA- American money going to Americans- if only all our products could be like Studpop! 5The best addition to my tool bag in a long time I was originally going to purchase a battery operated stud finder with all of the bells and whistles to add to my arsenal of tools but, once I came across this little gem I knew I had to try it. I doesn't rely on batteries, instead, it uses an impressively strong magnet to find the metal fasteners used to secure drywall to the studs. When you pass the Studpop over a place on the walls or ceiling that has one of these metal fasteners, the magnet that's attached to the center pendulum is naturally attracted to the metal fastener and makes the center assembly stand at attention notifying the user that a stud is present in this spot. This product is, in my opinion, is something that most anyone can understand how to use within minutes with no instructions (they do give you instructions). Shortly after I had received my Studpop and trying it myself, I handed it to my wife and asked her to find a stud with no instructions. Needless to say, she found a stud within 10 seconds and actually took her hand off of it and hung her keys on it. We were both impressed. She, now, wants one for herself to hang pictures and such around the house. I would recommend this product to that has ever had the want or need for a stud finder. 5Gimmick Gimmick at best. First, the one I received has been used and thus this is not a brand new product. Second, the magnet is just too weak. Yes, it can find nails in a drywall but this is NOT as good as any neodymium magnet (such as MagnetPal) or CH Hanson magnetic stud finder. Overall, I would NOT recommend this product.High price (reason why only four stars), otherwise this wonderful product. The magnet is strong and works on vinyl siding. When compared to two other products, this is probably the strongest in terms of magnetic property. Very versatile product. I have no plastered wall to try these on. I would recommend this product.Magnetism:MagnetPal: 80%CH Hanson: 70%Studpop: 40% 2Works on plaster; more reliable than electronic stud finder I hung a long closet rod on a plaster wall but was unsure if the support brackets were actually screwed into a stud. After many false readings I used a small drill bit to find what felt like solid wood behind the plaster. My stud finder was a decade old so I decided the current devices must be more accurate. I searched on Amazon and bought a well reviewed electronic device but then saw the good reviews and low price of the Studpop and figured it was worth a gamble. The day it arrived I went to test the location of my closet rod supports. I was amused at how easily the Studpop found the nails, and therefore the studs, beneath the plaster. I was also relieved to find that each bracket was on a stud. The secret to the Studpop must be the new generation of powerful magnets. When it is slid along the wall it gives an immediate and unambiguous signal through both the click and the movement of the sensor toggle -- all without batteries. I am now buying a couple more for stocking stuffers. 5Despite my doubts, it works. It really does work. It takes a little toying around with to understand how it works, but I mounted my TV using one of these and enough time has passed to ensure my TV will not be falling down. One warning: I have white walls, and rubbing the bottom along the wall did leave marks, cover it with a paper towel to avoid any markings on the wall. 5
