Customer Reviews

It lasted one year. I loved this headlamp! It isn't super bright but the battery's last a long time. I use it at work (aircraft line mechanic) 4 days a week in all weather conditions without any problems. I would give it 5 stars but after one year of use it stopped working. Cheap headlamps only last me 6 months but this wasn't cheap and I expected much more. As mentioned in other reviews, the micro switch solder joints broke free. Since it is out of warrantee, I soldered the tiny switch back in place and it is working again. I think I will surround the back side of the switch with hot glue to give it some more support. Streamlight makes good products but I don't know if I would buy it again, I need something a little more durable. For the infrequent user it would be good enough for years of use. 4The best thing since sliced bread The best thing since sliced bread. I've been through a plethora of headlamps prior to this one and I'm disappointed that I wasted so much money on all of those. The fact that this can interface with my tactical helmet, a ball cap, or on the molle of my tactical gear or plate carrier is stupendous. The clip is super sturdy and stay right where you leave it both on terms of rotation angle and actual retention. The light itself has a ton of variability with 5 levels of brightness on each setting and 4 different output modes. Having to hold down the button to change intensity is a little bit annoying, but nothing life-or-death. Changing light modes (white, blue, red, IR) is easy and definite, there is no way it can slip out of one option into another. The fact that this unit can take AA or CR123A batteries is amazing. I have cases upon cases of AA batteries and am more than happy to feed the light with those rather than expensive CR123A. So far I am still on the original Kirkland AA battery I put into the light and have used it on 3 multi-day outings both in sun and pouring rain.Highly recommend. Have only had the item for about 2 months, but it's going strong with a good deal of usage. 5The picture is not what you get. This is a great light. However I purchased this product specifically for the mount that is pictured with the intent of keeping the light as a backup. When the product arrived, it came with a completely different mounting bracket. If the mounting bracket is not a concern, this is a great light that is durable, works in all weather, has IR capability. 3Poor quality switch makes it unreliable, useless gear. I bought this for camping in harsh environments that require durable equipment. I like the multiple battery option, being able to run on a AA came in handy, however, after a little over 1 year of occasional use it failed internally. I pushed the button to turn on the light one night, and felt a slight click, but nothing happened, after this pushing the button felt squishy, and the light would not turn on. Of course this happened in the wilderness in the middle of the night (I had a backup). When I got back from the wilderness I contacted Streamlight Support. The Streamlight website [...] says their products have a limited lifetime warranty, however the warranty department told me the Sidewinder 2 only has a 1 year warranty. When I asked how much they would charge to repair the light they said it would cost as much as a new light. I guess limited lifetime means 1 year? Knowing that I now own an expensive piece of garbage I decided to take it apart to see if I could fix it. When I removed the 4 screws that hold the lens on to access the button that was not doing anything, what I found looked like a quality/design problem. The Micro switch that is depressed when the operator presses the button had come off the circuit board (picture attached). I don't know if this is a common thing, but I've never had this problem with a Petzl headlamp, so I think I'm going back to Petzl. If anyone from Streamlight is reading this, I wanted to like your product as you market this as something for military and industrial use, it's a terrible shame that you don't stand behind your product and I hope no one ever has the same failure I had in a situation that results in loss of human life. Marketing your product as "Made in USA" and "Limited Lifetime Warranty" should mean more than an expensive disposable piece of gear. I will never buy another one of your products. So for this price point, due to the poor support and marginal reliability I would not recommend this product. 2I wouldn't use this for hiking solely because it is not terribly bright, but the different color light modes are ... Not as bright as I thought it was going to be, but this definitely packs a punch for admin uses or enclosed spaces. I wouldn't use this for hiking solely because it is not terribly bright, but the different color light modes are nice, there is apparently an IR mode as well but I have no way of testing it out, so I don't know if its real or not. I have this on my plate carrier and it serves me well. Its nice having peace of mind that I can use three types of batteries in this (CR 123, AAA, AA), so I have very little chance of not having the right battery on hand. The clip likes to stay in the place you set it to, and its thick and firm enough to not bend or wobble. The light intensity modes are another great touch. Overall this is a wonderful product that I would recommend. 4not durable The Sidewinder Compact II is excluded from Streamlight's limited lifetime warranty. It has a one-year warranty instead. Streamlight must have been aware this thing can't deal with regular use. The plastic piece that secures the clip broke off, exposing the battery compartment. It appears to be held on by a 1mm ring of superglue. It fell apart after fourteen months of intermittant use. 2Good light, poor MOLLE attachment. Great light. I don't recommend trying to use the MOLLE attachment to hold the light on the front of a vest, or ruck. Mine was lost on the first trip out. Keep it on your head, or in your ruck and it will give you a long service life. The light itself is well built, and lightweight. The multiple battery option is a real plus. The button is silent. I also like how it starts with the dimmest setting and gets brighter vs. the the other way around. The led selector seitch is intuitive, too. Just remember the phrase, IR (I are), Red, White, and Blue , and you know which led your selecting in the dark using the tactile indicators. This is a good, functional light that does what it s designed to do well. Streamlight did a good job with this light. 4Excellent quality, unique features compared to other headlamps. Very robust and versatile. The multiple LED colors are great for working outside, hiking, climbing, skiing, etc.. The red light is great for maintaining night vision if reading maps or working with astronomy equipment. Elastic headband is very comfortable and easily adjustable to almost any size.I really like the helmet attachment that comes with the light. I can attach the helmet accessory to my climbing/bump helmet which makes it easy to attach and detach the headlamp for climbing/skiing/etc. with the push of a button. At 70 lumens the light has ample brightness to work outside, hike a trail, set up camp, cook etc.. I would have given it 5 stars if its white LED provided higher output matched to the 200+ lumens other headlamps provide.I would definitely buy this headlamp again over the higher output lamps due to its superior comfort, light weight, easy one handed operation, and ability to easily attach and detach from a helmet or rail. 4The best tactical lamp set I've ever had!!! Had it for a month now and using daily. It does everything what they say it does and more. They say it works with CR123 and AA batteries...wrong. It works with CR123, AA and AAA batteries. Of course the run time is shorter with AA and even shorter with AAA but if in sticky situation and that's all you have, you get out of the pickle.Helmet mount works like a charm. Very light wearing on your head (I wear it mostly strapped to my belt; you don't even notice it's there) and considering the competition has some stronger and brighter lamps, this is enough. You don't need all these lumens in the dark...unless you do some search-and-rescue on a really big landscape. In tactical terms you have to use less light to keep yourself concealed from the enemy anyways.Having blue, red and IR is awesome.Have dropped it by accident few times on concrete...good as new.Love this lamp! 5Awesome UPDATED: Broken This is an awesome headlamp that has a built in clip, comes with a helment mounting plate and has 4 colors. I use it all the time and can't live without it now. I'm also a huge fan of the larger model: B001605SZ0Updated: September 30, 2015I loved this headlamp but the button inside the housing has broken off the board. Service said it's not covered so I'm out an $80 light. Other than this issue, I loved the light and all my other Streamlight products. 2
