Do NOT buy for a Mac Ever since Mavericks, all of these USB to display devices have become quite the pain to use. Even though it says Startech on the side, the actual display hardware and software is made by DisplayLink and they are having trouble getting their drivers to work properly. Using the latest driver from their website (2.3), only one monitor would work and the mouse was choppy and a bit laggy when moved around the monitor (this is subjective because only 2 out of the 4 people I showed this to noticed it). Edges of windows are squared, transparency doesn't work correctly, and after an hour of use I noticed that the whole thing seems to use some form of JPEG compression, as the more windows and things you put on a monitor, the more compression artifacts you see. Visiting webpages that use lots of color, or animated GIFs really make it standout just how much compression is being used to power these USB displays to the point where it's difficult to read. I should also mention that using Mission Control and many other functions either takes several seconds to respond, or just crashes your user session completely, which kicks you back to the login screen. Very frustrating.I contacted support via the chat window they have on their website and the person I worked with was very helpful. I thought maybe I had just gotten a bad one, but all of these things are known issues and the representative directed me to their newest beta driver. They just released (3/15/15) it (2.4 beta 1) which actually allows you to use two monitors at once and supposedly fixes some some issues, but all the transparency, drawing, crashing, and compression-related problems are still there. From what I can tell, they are working on it, but it will take time.To be clear though, Ethernet, audio, and USB work great, the only issues I have are with the display (which is what I bought it for). None of the Thunderbolt 2 docks for Macs actually support dual video, even though they typically have a Thunderbolt and HDMI output, you can only use one at a time (something they don't really advertise and it confuses a lot of people).So my solution for now: order two Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapters for the monitors ($7.50/each), and just use this for Ethernet, audio, and USB. That kind of defeats the advantage of just plugging in one cable, but I need something that works first. If they ever get the driver issues figured out, I can always switch back and keep the MDP to DVI adapters for something else. 3It works very solidly within MacOS and Windows 7 sessions ... It works very solidly within MacOS and Windows 7 sessions - I see no performance degradation. The problem I haven't found a work around for yet is that the monitor doesn't work on the Windows login / lock screen. When the machine first powers on, there's a black screen on my HDMI connected monitor until I enter my username and password blind. Then the monitor comes on when the Windows session loads. When I lock the computer or log out of the user session, the display freezes again. I've tried updating drivers to no avail.I'm going to pick up a display port cable and see if that makes any difference. 3Don't buy for Mac!There starting off with only one problem. It has issues for me connecting to my speaker system. It's only a smaller annoyance but every time I click a new audio file, I need to mute and unmute.But with new software updates around iOS 10.13.* they stopped syncing two screens off the system. Then the next update I can't now sync my screen, my speaker but only my mouse and my keyboard. So, with each successive iOS upgrade the functionality is dropping.This is very frustrating. Go else where for mac docking.2the unit works fine for mouseI bought this for my ~ 2015 MacBook Air to provide for all the things one gets these things for...various peripherals, but also largely using external monitor. While I did take special notice of some issues that folks encountered, nowhere did I see "won't work" with VGA connection. I tried various things when trying to get it to work with MACOS 10.13.3, and got a flat out "no signal" on monitor. I then saw that there were issues encountered with 10.13.4, BUT that a beta fix could fix this. I upgraded my Mac to this, and uninstalled, reinstalled the beta...this time, I got rid of the "no singal" (kind of), but after further trying all tricks on the DisplayLink SW page (this is what runs this) and Apple, nothing works. I was, however, assured "Apple is working on it"...I have given up...the unit works fine for mouse, keyboard, printer...but buying a converter to go directly into the Display Port on my Mac...which kind of defeats the purpose.I would advise if hooking up a VGA monitor is your goal that you hold off (if you have a Mac)...2Don't buy to use with a MacThis dock is not recognized by Macs so you cannot change which monitor displays what. You get the same screen on every monitor. There is virtually no support for Mac on their website. You can also not use the dock when the laptop is closed. I will be returning this product.1The right balance for me Ranting about modern laptop docks:I remember the good ol' days when you could buy a splitter for a dollar at radio shack and turn your single coax cable into 2, and have your TV in 2 rooms instead of 1, and not pay the technician $100 for the privilege.It just doesn't seem to work that way anymore. While I fundamentally disagree that USBc port replication streams are worth nearly the price everyone is charging, I cannot argue that they are more complicated than old splitters.We're muxing and demuxing and other fancy stuff here, so I guess that's why folks are paying hundreds of dollars.Ranting about DisplayLink:My company supplied laptop uses linux, and displaylink isn't directly supported on anything other than ubuntu. This leads to general incompatibility and makes anything with displaylink strictly a windows (and maybe MAC) technology at the time I'm writing this. I tried very hard to find a non-displaylink dock, and they are rare and even more expensive. So I am forced to accept how things are instead of how I wish they could be.Anyway, ranting aside, this thing has worked quite well for me. I wanted to be able to support 3 monitors, and have a handful of USB ports to work with, and I wanted support for HDMI and DP. This thing meets all the requirements, and it's not $500 so I call this a huge win.736801My laptop is a Razer Blade 15 base model (2017) and my laptop does not support USBc charging, so I cannot evaluate that aspect.My laptop gets quite warm on the bottom, so I greatly appreciate the design and shape of this dock, as it allows me to prop up the laptop to give better airflow and cooling to the underside.No issues with the construction quality, or issues with USB drivers in windows randomly disconnecting and connecting as I have seen on some types of USB hubs (usually due to power issues).Also, I have noticed issues with my laptop lid needing to be opened every 5 minutes to unlock my screen, however, I attribute this to the laptop, not the dock. It seems to only be an issue if/when I launch an application that triggers optimus to switch over to the GPU. After the discrete GPU (gtx 1060 ti) has been tickled, I have to leave the laptop screen open to avoid the display freezing. If I close the lid again, it freezes after ~5min, I have to open the lid to unfreeze it. If I reboot the laptop, it runs fine with the lid closed (until that discrete card gets triggered by optimus again). I tried updating the displaylink driver, but it did not help. 5Extend Video to multiple screens when your laptop doesn't have the portsThis product allows me to run multiple monitors from a laptop that does not has neither a 'docking station port' nor multiple video out connections.Although there are 3 video out (1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 1 VGA) it will only support two video signals--either 2 'digital' signals, or 1 VGA and one digital signal. However, by using the laptop screen, it is possible to get a three-screen display.The price was lower than multiple other brands that claim to do the same thing.I have not checked the refresh rate of the extended screens. I do not use this computer for gaming, so I have no idea how suitable for such this would be. This filled my need for a USB 3 docking station that would drive 2 monitors with my computer image across 2 screens. The DP supports my 2560x1440 display through a StarTech 4-port USB DP KVM Switch and an HD display through a separate HDMI KVM switch. Now, I have up to 4 PCs driving a dual-monitor set-up. Everyone comes into my office and asks how many computers I have :)This docking station is a level above most others, especially in this price range. It has all the ports I need, and lots of USB 3s, not a bunch of USB 2s like you get with others.I tried a sexy USB-C model from another source, but my laptop's port just was not up to the task. And, only 1 of my laptops even has USB-C, so it really was not as flexible as I needed. In a couple years, I hope all PCs use the same level of USB-C, but as of today, most do not support data, video and especially power all together. This USB 3 model works with all my laptops and I'm not really missing out on bandwidth. I just have to plug my laptop into the USB 3 dock and a power source, then I'm up and running.Last bit of general advice - if you're like me and you buy lots of stuff on Amazon, especially Electronics, then you must use FakeSpot to root out all of the fake reviews that some of the sellers use. 4 or 5 stars just doesn't mean the same thing if it's coming from fake review(ers). 5Very good one. You will need to uninstall the previous USB Video driver , restart your PC and then you will be able to install the driver.2nd update (2017/May/05)After using the produce for a while, I found that the one of my monitor keep losing the signal periodically (quick turn off (black) / turn on (after 1 second) every 20-40 minutes.....This screen (DELL P2214Hb) was connected to the docking station with a HDMI-TO-DVI cable. If I connect the cable to the HDMI port of my laptop (dell precision workstation or thinkpad x1c 3rd gen) then everything looks fine. But if I use the HDMI port of the docking station then the off/on happens every day. I dont know the reason behind this,,,,,So I am now downgrading the score from 5 starts to 3 starts... 3Perfect for m y home officeI sometimes work from home and wanted to duplicate my office environment (dual monitors, printer, scanner, etc), however, my Microsoft Surface only has one USB. Using this Startech Docking Station, I now have both my monitors (one was a VGA and one an HDMI), my printer, and my portable scanner powered up and ready for use. My one USB has been transformed into an entire office system and I love it! Best of all, when I want to convert my virtual 'work' office into a 'home' office, I unplug the one USB cord from my work computer and plug into my home computer. But overall, it works with my MacBook Air, keyboard and mouse tracker***UPDATE** they must have made an update, I can use with no issues now, works great!! updated to 5 stars!!5So close to sending this back, then the planets aligned This is for the HDMI and Display port dual monitor version.I was moments away from boxing this up and shipping it back. Connected everything up, it was found by both systems, but the lag on the mouse was insane. I rebooted host 2 and when it cam back it didn't see either the mouse or keyboard..Switched to the host 1, it also was not responding to the keyboard or mouse. (Wireless keyboard and mouse combo), unplugged the USB dongle, plugged it back in and it reloaded the drivers. Now they work seamlessly. I have not messed around with the network, but don't think I will. Initially there were lots of issues with it figuring out the displays also, but they all were found and work as if plugged in directly to each laptop. The switching speed between host 1 and host 2 is a little slow, but I do not need to switch frequently and I have a few moments while it transitions. I am using this on a PC and a laptop, the PC does seem to have an issue on boot, that it does not see the keyboard and will not boot. I am still working that out. My PC is several years old, but running Windows 10. I was concerned that it would not work the dual monitors over USB, but this has been pretty simple to install and only a few issues that I was able to work out. 5Works great on a newer Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (work latop) Works great on a newer Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (work latop), in a docking station. Could not get it to fully work, in conjunction with with a Dell Latitude E6430 with a Dell E-Port docking station. After hours of fooling around with it, I am sure it's the age of the Dell hardware and early USB 3.0 (~ 5 years). I was able to get some limited functionality -- keyboard & mouse, external webcam, and file transfer. However, displays would not work at all (and yes, they work connected directly to the Dell or the E-Port), and the Dell wouldn't even boot with the StarTech connected. Kind of defeated the whole purpose for me. This replaced an old Belkins KVM with the same Dell and an older Lenovo, which wouldn't work with the new one.I think if you had two systems (laptops, docking stations or desktops) with new USB 3.0, it's probably great product. The features, capabilities, and performance are all very good. I think it's a good purchase (and this was a great price for this model), but if either of your systems have USB 3.0 that's older than a couple of years, you may not get what you want out of it. 3Great Startech dock and customer serviceThis product is a godsend for a desktop replacement laptop. I use an msi gs60 ghost pro as my laptop and gaming computer. I have to plug in a keyboard, mouse, hdmi monitor, gigabit ethernet, and charge my phone. with this dock I am able to do all of this. The drivers are picked up and installed by windows very quickly. Also, startech has a great little utility for changing the monitor output, the way it is oriented, etc. Also, a shout-out to startech representative Gordon, who helped me trouble shoot my dock when the fast charge port wasn't working. It turns out you should always double check that the power brick is plugged in all the way. also in terms of gaming performance this docks works fine. I can push gta V out at medium settings to and an HD asus monitor at 60fps no problem with no noticeable input lag (although I'm sure the response of the monitor is now about ten ms). The reason why it works so well is that windows picks up the monitor as a generic pnp monitor so it works just fine. Overall great buy for $100. Also don't spend more money for the display port one if you don't need to. In the future i would have preferred a few more usb ports but that's nothing a good old usb 3.0 hub can't fix.5It's amazing that even though my laptop doesn't originally supports 3 ... It's amazing that even though my laptop doesn't originally supports 3 other screens, this docking station works like a charm. After you install the driver and put everything together, it might lag at first or the screens might flash but it stops after the first start up. As far as I can understand it's the computer getting used to the new device/adapter, and I'm really impressed how fast it is and good the clarity is. Clarity could be better (because I'm using a tv as well), but again, this type of device is not common especially at this price, I don't play of games so I'm not really that picky, but as a work station and to play movies, I love the docking station and I don't need anything fancy. Would recommend this to anyone with a laptop In need of more screens. :) 5Works like a champ for MacBook Air, Early 2015 = 3 Screens of Content: 2 Large Monitors + Mac ScreenI have a 2015 Macbook Air, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB that I wanted to run in dual-monitor extended display mode with HP 24F monitors. This is the only product I found on Amazon that claimed to do what I needed. And it works like a champ. NOTE: You can not run dual HDMI. One monitor can be HDMI and the other must be DVI or VGA. I have mine running HDMI/DVI and they look and perform identically. I did have a small issue, in that I chose the wrong driver. I called StarTech's 800 Number and it was answered on the 3rd ring but Justin, in Ohio. Justin quickly diagnosed the driver issue and had me up and going in minutes. Could not be happier.5works wellsmall, light and works as expected. the audio port is a bit finicky but it may be my jack.I just would like this thing to have a couple of screw slots in the back to attach it to the wall for convenience but no big deal. I like it and it works foe me.4Great dual monitor solution!!! I purchased a new laptop to replace my old desktop. I needed a solution to connect dual monitors to the laptop. I purchased the Startech and am glad I did. It works perfectly. It was easy to install and get everything up and running. I really like that this unit has additional USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, audio input/output and supports HDMI and DVI. I am running one monitor via HDMI and one DVI. The resolution on both monitors looks great! It looks as good as when I was using my desktop. I am very happy with this purchase. By the way, this is the same unit as the Kensington. I believe Startech makes the device and puts the Kensington name on it. The Kensington is $50 more. 5Decent but has some lagI like how compact it is and how it can work with any windows computer. My biggest complaint is that when you are running 2 monitors through it and try to run a wireless keyboard and mouse through it the keyboard and mouse start to lag. I had to plug them directly into the computer. This only poses an issue when i switch computers and forget to take the usb dongle out.3
