    Best USB 3.0 hub I've found for data useI've probably spent way too much time trying to find a good reliable USB 3.0 hub for use with external drives and flash drives. This 4 port hub seems to be one of the best choices for that use case right now. I've tested it with USB 3.0 storage devices on both Linux & WIndows and it works, giving actual USB 3.0 speeds.It does come with an external 2A power supply, so it can power typical external 2.5" external storage devices and I suppose it can be used for charging too, but this hub's design seems optimized more for high speed data.I didn't notice the hub getting too warm when testing external drive speed tests.5Small, fast, reliableI use this as my portable USB 3 hub. Small enough to toss in a computer bag and I don't need the power adapter for most items I plug into it. But it's nice to have the external power adapter in case you need it. As with all Startech products I own, it lives up to it's specs for speed, and seems to be well made and reliable.5Excellent qualityFit perfectly on top of my 12v Power Distro Unit (Scope Mounted) build quality and performance of this USB3.0 Hub.5Small, but mighty!As others have said, this powered version of Startech's USB hub is great for external USB drives. I use this to power up the external drive for my kids Xbox and we've never had a glitch. Before using this, the hard drive acted a little flaky at times...now I think it was a power issue given all else was the same. For the size, it seems a bit pricey, but if it addresses your needs then maybe its a justified price point for happiness or satisfaction. Cheers! RC5One Of The Better HubsThis hub has a lot going for it. It is well-constructed, looks fine, and most importantly it performs as advertised. It may seem a little pricey at $35 but there are a couple benefits. It is powered which is important for any hub but especially so for 3.0 hubs. Unlike some others (read their reviews), it does deliver full power to all ports. I have at least one other hub that works fine until you plug in the 4th device. So far this hub has been working fine with two Seagate 2TB external drives and a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 670GB drive connected. I have also connected both 2.0 & 3.0 devices to this hub and all are working at their design speeds.You should not expect 5-10 times the throughput with USB 3.0 vs 2.0 regardless of what the marketing promises are. From my experience using the three drives mention above, 3-5X increases are more likely. Still, 300%+ performance jumps can be well-worth the money if you routinely stream (or backup/transfer) large files or groups of files. I have several hubs laying around (Belkin, Tripplite, etc.)that have performed very well. I would have to say that the StarTech mentioned here performs as advertised. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.4May not work consistently with your port replicatorWorks as expected when plugged directly into my computer. However, when I plug it into my USB-C breakout hub (iTeknic) it will not recognize flash drives unless I unplug the data cable and then plug it back in while the flash drive is inserted. I'm not knocking off any stars because it may be a problem with the iTeknic hub/port replicator.5PROBLEM WITH HUBThe StarTech USB 3.0 Hub did connect my three USB 3.0 Hard Disks.But I found I could not transfer files between any of the three disks.I had to transfer a file to my main hard drive and then to the hard disk where I wanted it.Support at StarTech was less than knowledgeable.The first technician told me the Hub must be defective and to require it to Amazon.Which I did and Amazon was great. They sent me a new hub by overnight.But this hub did the same thing. So back to StarTech support. The next technician reviewed my file and picked on on the Error message I was getting. Error 0x80070037. He found this was a common error with Windows. But there was not solution.Instead he told me to contact Seagate who manufactured the Hard Disks. And no help there.SO BE WARNED. This USB 3.0 Hub might work for you or it might not...2Works Great!Works great!! Allows more than 1 device to function as if adding more USB ports to your computer. I was hoping I could set up dual headsets on Windows 10, so both could hear and use the microphone at the same time, but it treats the devices as totally separate... which is what it was supposed to do, but I was hoping I could anyway. Had to try!5Power to the MassesThe versatility of this portable power hub is what makes it a must-have item in your tech toolkit. The StarTech charges phones and tablets for multiple users during long road trips. If your older model car only has a 12V plug, get a dual charger by Tylt, and expand to five charging hubs (see pic 1). Our three kids can plug into any one of the four ports on the StarTech, while front-seat passengers use the 12V car charger port. In newer car models equipped with a USB port, simply plug in for standard 4-port access.That same idea can work with a power bank when recharging from a home base. Relay the StarTech from the Kodiak to your gear eliminating having to plug into as many different outlets as you have power cords (see pic 2). Like updated cars, tech-savvy homes are being built with USB ports built into the wall outlet (see pic 3) thereby eliminating the need of the Kodiak as a relay power system. Of course, you can always port off your computer USB, too.The StarTech portable USB hub lets you power up from anywhere at anytime no matter where you are. A terrific pocket-sized tool for your computing power needs.5Good when it worksIs nice and fast when it works. Breath on it and it will disconnect your devices, however. Touch it and you're our of luck.If you are attaching it to a desktop that never moves and you never hook or unhook any devices, I'm sure its fine. If you, like me, bought it to go with a laptop - this is not a good solution. It is so finicky that it doesn't even always load up my hard disks, and when I touch it to get them to recognize, it disconnects another hard disk.Long and short of it, I'm not sure I'd recommend this - unfortunately i need to hold on to it until a new one arrives.2
