Customer Reviews

tip: slide blade up and down instead of down only makes my kitchen knives sharper than they ever have been and easy to keep that way. Here's a tip I saw on a Youtube video that isn't on the instructions or Spyderco video. If you look at people using an ordinary flat stone they work the chisel or knife or whatever back and forth on the stone. The stone sharpens with movement in either direction. The trick with the Sharpmaker is to do the same thing. Instead of sliding the blade down, lifting it away, raising it back up to the top, and repeating (this is what the instructions and Spyderco videos show), just keep it vertical and slide it up and down. I start with 5 up & down on each side of the knife, then 4 up and down, etc. In about a minute or two I have a very sharp blade! 5Worth every penny I have the Sharpmaker and the white stone that comes with it give all knifes a nice sharp edge. This stone brings it to the next level. There is a very noticeably difference when used - knifes are razor sharp when used properly. Could shave with my Delica if I wanted.Only ordered one and it will become a "pain" to use in the future, so will be getting another for use in the Sharpmaker. Glad I read the reviews as it lives up to them. never was I able to get a knife this sharp. I am not great at it is why I got the Sharpmaker kit and this stone just adds to the positive experience. No longer fear or hate getting a blade sharp - now razor sharp with ease.Update 12.18 - got the second stone to make it a little easier. Went on a "if it has a blade, going to sharpen it" binge. Scissors, kitchen knife's and all my pocket and EDC's. The EDC utility that I use most often (Spyderco), I found that if it starts to get a little less sharp - give it a couple of passes with these stones and I am back to razor sharp. Very little effort to get it back. Never had a pair of Scissors this sharp - I just followed the instructions in the book. Again - worth the total cost of the kit and extra stones. 5I compared the scratch marks of the fine edge against the ultra fine edge stones under a ... I compared the scratch pattern of the fine edge against the ultra fine edge stones under a Plugable USB 2.0 Digital Microscope with Flexible Arm Observation Stand for Windows, Mac, Linux (2MP, 10x-250x Magnification) and there's definitely a difference. Not quite a mirror edge, but the steel that Zero Tolerance 0566CF Hinderer Folder Carbon Fiber Knife with SpeedSafe is I wouldn't expect it. It's worth the money for sure. Does what it says. 5Only got 1 stone, Ad refers to "stones"...otherwise great The stone is excellent quality as I expected, the only problem is that the ad indicates that this would be a set of 2 stones, not just a single one. Having only one is usable but not nearly as easily as having the set of 2 that should be used. The ad refers to "stones" plural, and Spyderco usually sells these as a set of 2 so one would expect that the listing sold by Amazon themselves would be a set like the ad indicates. 3Fakes for sure! At first, I thought these were the real deal because they are definitely softer than the white rods that came with my sharpmaker or so I thought. After prolonged use of the sharp maker in was not satisfied with my edge. Then one if my white rods broke and I bought a new set from a reputable knife store and wow! What a difference!! I showed this set and they said they were fakes with just red sharpie on the tips that really have a pink hue.Don't buy these are counterfeit! 1Please read before buying These sticks are great!! A great addition to the Sharpmaker system. Some of my knives now are "scary" sharp. There are a couple things to keep in mind though. If you can't get a good knife really sharp using the basic Sharpmaker these sticks won't help you - like all sharpening methods - you need the proper technique. The quality of steel is also a factor, these sticks are extremely fine so they are of little help when used on low quality steels. These sticks do not remove much steel, they hone or polish your edge.As to price, I paid less than $35 for two sticks - stones from Arkansas or Japan in the same grit/mesh/micron range are more expensive.Note - As I go through my users, touching them up with the new sticks - I have seen improvement over all steels but, as I said before - the better the steel, the more impact.I can get AUS-8 very sharp but, it doesn't stay that way. My BG-42 blades seem to love whatever the mesh/grit/micron rating is - one is a little neck knife by Kit Carson - it catches and lops off hair without touching skin. Can' t wait to get to the S30V stuff - it seems that finer grain = sharper - is true. But, how long that lasts is the next question. 5Gives an extra pop of sharpness. These are not really necessary. There I said it. For most uses you don't need to get your knife edge this clean. You may even want to leave it a bit unrefined and toothy (microscopicly serrated) as this may cut better or hold an edge better in actual real use.You can probably replicate the function of these stones with some combo of stropping and/or very light final strokes on the fine stones. So no you don't need these. Probably more useful to get diamond stones for the harder steels. That said, these do work to give a final bit of extra pop after the fine stones. If you do like using them they are not crazily priced and do what I expected of them. They just don't always get used. 5Worth it? Worth it! Been using the triangle sharpner for 3 years. Results were adequate, shaving sharp. Then read the review on this once. How such a frivolous additional stone could be justify. Price felt right, only bought one.Return on investment is phenomenal. Close to mirror polish finish, stroke 30 for 5 minutes, stroke 40 for 1 minute seems to give the best results with a few drops of water to make the edge slide against the stone.I thought I once knew what cutting meant. This little stone redefined that word.Proven result on my classic chef knife. Effortless motion, vegetables are now properly sliced, just like in the old japanese Iron Chef video! It really make you feel that way, as the cutting stroke requires less energy, you are cutting faster with greater accuracy and precision. The result on D2 steel benchmade 710 is quite remarkable, no word can describe it, I guess the harder the steel, the greater the result. The stone came new with no chip. Haven't had the chance to use my paring knife yet, wonder if it would have as much wowness on it. 5Ultra Fine! I love my Sharpmaker, so I just bought these, and the diamond triangles, to complete the set. Pricey, but well worth it, IMO. These are really nice, they create a near mirror finish, ultra fine as described, and much sharper and finer than the standard white stones. You won't regret it once you use them.I ordered two, and annoyingly, one of the caps to one of the package tubes wasn't in the box, so the stone fell out and bounced around in shipping, but didn't break at least. Now I have no cap for my tube, so I guess I'll make my own holder for these stones. The diamond rods came in better tubes that could almost be used for permanent storage, but they're just a bit too cheap and cheesy. Instead of cheap disposable packing tubes, it would be nice if they'd come in quality storage tubes with rubber caps, or something. I'll make a Kydex 4-stone sheath that clips to the bottom of the Sharpmaker, for a complete portable package. 5The, Ultra Fine stone. (Spyderco) Hey sports fans. I use this in conjunction with my Spyderco Sharp Maker. Works very well as a final step, on the stones. Note, it's important to me to use a leather strop as a final step, overall. If I have a pocket knife that is somewhat sharp, I'll skip the first two stones and only use this Ultra Fine, to get it back to shape. Very happy with purchase, money well spent. Have a great day. 5
