Customer Reviews

Best for those who like to take good care of their knives. This is not great for bringing a battered edge back from the dead but it does a great job at honing and touching up edges in the field. I use mine for both knives and axes and it is the best product on the market that I have found. If you tend to let you edges go a little bit I would suggest buying something with a diamond side in addition to the ceramic side. But if fine honing is all you need, this paired with a small strop will keep your edges keen while not feeling the cumbersome burden of carrying larger whetstones. This is also a great tool for learning since you will not spend a lot for being able to do a lot. 5Best Pocket Stone I Own! This is a really nice sharpening stone. I like how I have a medium and a fine stone at my disposal. This ceramic stone is made from the same quality material as Spydercos' Sharpmaker rods. Both sides are high quality and flat as a pancake which is important in achieving a good edge.If you are planning on using this to restore a damaged edge or if you want to re-profile your knife, then this stone is not the one to buy. It is however perfect in making a decent but dull edge razor sharp.I can get just as sharp of a hair whittling edge with this stone as I can with the Sharpmaker or even my Edge-Pro system. 5My favorite field sharpener Great field sharpener! I've long carried a DC4 into the field but the last one I bought was noticeably poorer in quality so I decided to give this Double Stuff a try and it way exceeded my expectations. The stone should be used dry, which is a must for a field sharpener. Who carries honing oil with them in the field? The coarse side lets you re-edge a damaged blade, or resharpen an extremely dull one but giving your blade a few licks with the fine side at the end of each day is usually enough to keep your edge perfect without removing a bunch of metal from your knife. I've used this on axes as well with a circular motion and it works great for sharpening them as well. This stone, a small strop made from a belt, and a piece of stropping compound are my entire blade maintenance kit in the field and they all fit in the same pouch on my pack. 5Pocket Gem This is a very versatile sharpener for even pocket carry. If you want to be able to touch up your blades even when you are mobile, this is just the thing. No water or oil required! From time to time use scouring powder to clean metal from the pores and it's new again. Unlike the old school whet rocks I used to carry there is no dishing of the surface with wear. Well, nothing lasts forever but this comes close. It will break if dropped on concrete or the like.It is not a coarse stone, so don't count on it to reprofile a blade or to sharpen a blade you have allowed to get really dull. Spyderco classes this as medium and fine. Well enough, those are relative terms, but the medium side is probably less aggressive than what you (or I) think of as medium. That said, I carry this for touching up my already sharp knives. There is no need for me to put deep scratch marks that I'll want to polish out afterwards. 5Poor Spyderco quality I made this purchase off the reference of SEVERAL stores and a few friends who i camp with that said spyderco makes great products. I paid 29.99 for an item that fell a part as soon as i opened the package. It wasn't dropped, i literally took it out of the package and it just came apart before i was ever even able to use it. Can i still use parts of the stones? sure. Is that what i was expecting after all the rave of this product and the company? No. I received the package less than 30 minutes ago from the time i wrote this review. The hassle of going through an RMA at this point just isn't worth it. I wouldn't get a replacement in time for my next trip anyway. If they can't even make a quality stone i can't imagine how bad their knife quality is. I really wanted to like this product. Very unfortunate. 1Super handy combo stone. This is a handy little sharpener. I use it all the time for both my kitchen knives and my camp knife.Short Version: This gives a very eager edge that will bite very quickly. If that's what you like on your tools this is good. If you want a more refined edge, I would recommend a strop or finishing stone. The medium side will impart a very toothy edge and cuts fairly quickly. This can be used dry, but as with most abrasives lubricant will make it work far better and keep it from loading with steel. Did I mention this will load as quickly as it cuts? Now, the fine side is pretty decent and will refine that toothy edge and still allow it to retain a lot of bite. This side will look like it is loading much faster than the other, that is only due to it being white in color. If you plan on using this as is, I do recommend getting a finishing stone or a strop of some kind,I lapped the fine side of mine with a 1200 grit diamond stone and it is roughly the same as Spyderco's UF grit stone and I think this works much better in combination with the medium stone as it refines a lot of the toothiness and bite and gives a less eager edge. 5Fantastic Sharpener Good points:-Gives you a very nice polished shaving sharp edge-Product fit and finish is very nice (they took the time to radius the stones!)-Very nice quality leather sheath doubles as a strop for final polishing in a pinch-Ceramic is of the hardest materials known to man, only second to Diamonds-5 inch length provides a workable length to sharpen knives on without being overly awkward-Good value for the money-Ceramic is VERY long lasting and will pretty much never wear outThings to be aware of: (Note I didn't title this "bad points")-Although Ceramic is very hard, it is also brittle by design and will shatter if dropped-Ceramic by it's very nature is a fine abrasive and is more geared towards the finishing process. So if you have a chipped or damaged blade, don't bother using ceramic. You will be there all day! Instead use a different sharpening medium for heavier stalk removal.-Ceramic loads with steel faster than other abrasive mediums such as diamonds or synthetic stones, so they will require routine cleaning. Simply use some Comet cleanser and a NYLON scrubbing pad with water... Do not use steel wool or you will simply load the stone with more steel.Bottom line: Keeping the above in mind, I think this is a great sharpener from a great company. Give it a try! 5Amazon sale great, item not so much. OK, first let me say that the actual purchase from Amazon was great as usual, however the product leaves something to be desired. I have very good luck with every Spyderco product I have ever purchased. That is until now. Anyone who has ever used a combo stone will be used to the fact that they are usually one solid piece. Not so in this case. They literally just took a fine and medium pocket stone and glued them together, and they didn't do that very well. The stones are attached to each other at an angle. Not the type of fit and finish I expect from Spyderco. If I had known that this product was the same as the two seperate stones I already own I would have glued my current ones together and saved myself the money. Maybe it's because the ceramic material doesn't lend itself to being bonded together like regulat stones, I really don't know. But I will be contacting the company to see what they will do to remedy this. 3and the grit level seems very good for a fine edge Spyderco's ceramic material is very high quality, and the grit level seems very good for a fine edge. I have several different sharpeners at home, and wanted something to take with me on outings to maintain sharpness - this works great. I've used it on S30V, M390, and other steels, and it has no problem touching up these hard steels. I find that I get the most repeatable angles if put the stone on a flat surface and put the leather case underneath it to keep it from slipping, rather than holding it in my hand. 5Great sharpener but not for the beginner. These are the same stones that are used in the Spyderco Sharp Maker sharpening system, which I own. One side is the grey medium grit stone and the other is the white fine grit. These are flat stone that are meant to be held in your hand and used to polish out any nicks on your blade. the size makes it easy to toss this in a pocket or a pack to take care of your cutting edge on the go. this stone is big enough to use as a small bench stone, but it is thin so you will need to place it on the edge of a block to be able to work the knife on the stone, but it is also small enough to use as a file on the edge of a larger blade. this is not for the beginner to knife sharpening because there isn't any angle guides or instructions that come with this. It is just a double sided stone and a leather case, plain and simple.Care instructions are wash the stones in warm water with a mildly abrasive cleaner, and air dry. this only needs to be done when the metal particles have built up on the stone that it isn't removing much of the blade material when being used. they are made from ceramic, so they will chip easily, so keep them in the storage case when they are not in use.Not that it matters, but the leather case that came with my stone was a much darker brown and is more of a suede style leather. 5
