Customer Reviews

Made in Japan, that's better than China. By a billion. The SOTO Pocket Torch is a fantastic lighter for literally anything.Everyone that is complaining about it not lighting the first time, or the safety lock are absolute know nothings. The safety lock is so so so easy to take off. Who doesn't take that lock off of regular bic lighters as soon as you get it? Who? A Bozo. That's who.Get the damn lighter, the extension is great for illicit use....and it is so light that you will use it as your daily lighter from the day you get it.Bank on it. If you don't you're a total dud. 5You will never get more than a year out of it, but I still love the thing.Great wind resistant flame, lasts forever on a single lighter, and great focused flame jet for staring a fire. Only problem is it is almost as disposable as the lighter which powers it.I have owned 4 of these and it is an odd thing, they only seem to last a year no matter how much I use them. From the daily one for marshmellos, cigares and campfires, to the one in my go bag that has only seen a single test use, they stop working from 9 to 12 months. The piezo still works, so I assume it is the channel that funnels the gas to the jet head. If I use anmothe rlight to kick start it, I see the thing ends up leaking everywhere. ( very unsafe)It is too handy to abandon and there is nothing else quite like it. I also have a steep investment in 20 disposable lighters ( almost 4 dollars!!!) So I just see this as a lease rather than a purchase. 3For the first 3 months this worked perfect. Now it doesn'tLet me get this straight. For the first 3 months this worked perfect. Now it doesn't. The jet will light for a few seconds and then stop working the rest of the day. I use this for a lot of craft projects and when I go out camping. In order to get more use out of it, I have to take out the lighter and let it sit for the rest of the day, but the lighter in it works fine.Update. The lighter is no longer working. I took the lighter apart and discovered that because of the design, the lever that presses on the gas button will cut into the cable that carries the current for the ignition and cause a short. The poor design of that killed a great tool. 2Great lighter. Not so great at altitude.Great lighter for anything close to sea level (desert etc.) As long as you depress the button partially for a moment before igniting to allow the gas to begin flowing, the lighter ignites every time. The extendable feature allows you to light things you would normally need a big BBQ lighter to ignite.I went to the mountains this weekend and attempted to light a lantern with this lighter and it would not ignite. I read on the back that the lighter "may not ignite in cold weather or above 5,000 feet"I love this lighter for around the house and desert camping, but the lighter is not functional at elevation or cold temperatures. I will continue to use this lighter, but will find another option for mountain camping.***UPDATE*** I ended up taking apart the lighter and "tweaking" it like I did with cheap BIC lighters when I was a kid and it now works great at altitudes. The only downside of this modification is that the flame stays on for a second after you release the button. An acceptable trade off for a reliable lighter.Tweaking the lighter involves taking it apart, pulling off the flame adjustment knob, rotating it by hand a 1/4 to 1/2 a of a turn and then placing the knob back on, giving it a boost in the supplied butane pressure. Do this at your own risk : ) 3It is a must to have for me, but needs fixing a design flawThis is third one I bought as a replacement for lost and given as a gift to friends on hiking trails.Convenience of the directional and wind-proof flame is the key why I have this torch. It is much easier to start camping stove, camp fire, etc. with it than just using a lighter.I gave 4 stars just because its design and construction defect- the gas release pusher (lever) is too short. I had to add a wood chip or a small piece of crumbled paper under it so that the gas is consistently released at each strike. I needed to do it on all my purchased Soto torches of this model over past 5 years. So I had concluded that it is not a manufactures defect, but the design flaw. 4Finally a pencil torch worth buying.I've tried a lot of pencil torches and this is the first one I've ever liked. You just pop in the right kind of disposable lighter, put on the top, click the button and you're on your way. Excellent value for the money. Now that I've tried it and see that it works as well as I was told by a friend who has one I'm going to order a couple of spares. Not because I necessarily think this one is going to break, but when I finally find gear I really like, I always like to have an extra one on hand, just in case. You know what they say, two is one and one is none. The first time you use it, it took a few clicks to ignite. Once it got that worked out of it's system, it lights every time, first click. No complaints here. I'm still on my first lighter so time will tell how long it lasts, but for now I LOVE this thing. 5Worth Every Penny and Works Like a Champ! If you're someone who travels and enjoys cigars...but hates that you can't take your favorite torch with you, this is your answer. Generally throw this in my shave kit broken down and keep the lighter in my brief case or laptop bag and have never once had a problem. Works like a charm and saves you from having to buy a torch only to throw it away every trip. And yes, there are many other uses for this like camping, back yard, etc. This little guy is powerful enough I wouldn't doubt you could sweat copper pipe with it. Just make sure you get a cheapo "square-ish" disposable lighter for this as shown in the directions and not the rounded BIC style or the electric ignition types. 5I thought this was the oneUpon receiving:So far, I love this little unit. I use BernzOmatic torches to light my propane stove at home and while camping, but they have a major design flaw. The tiny little bit of plastic that connects the activation switch to the body fails after about six months of daily use.I was looking for something with a sturdier build and the Soto pocket torch 2019 seems to be it. It's also a lot more compact.I read some reviews of the original Soto pocket torch not working with certain types of lighters, so it was a brilliant move to release the 2019 model with a refillable internal unit.I will definitely purchase a few more.Three weeks in:The unit will only light every 3rd or 4th click and will not stay lit. From five down to three. 3Mine worked fineChild lock was annoying, just need a small file and file down the plastic until trigger moves smooth. It's made for camping, light lantern or stove.(Revise the review)I dropped couple times, and torch head got loose and started to move. Looks like lost the piezo wire connections.I still like it, and buy again. Less than a year, died. Just don't drop it. 4the ability to power this with a lighter you can find at any gas station is what makes this a greatThis thing is magical. If you are a backpacker and carry a lighter, there's no reason not to get this to save you on those windy days. Sure, you should be prepared for a situation in which you DON'T have it, but it sure is handy. I pop the metal guard off the lighter and turn the adjuster an extra half turn to get just a little more fuel. that provides for about an inch and a half of torch flame when viewed in the dark.the ability to power this with a lighter you can find at any gas station is what makes this a great buy 5
