Customer Reviews

Nice little project but poor instructions and not loud enough to enjoy as a radio.First one didn't work at all, and we were on my second one, child bordering on tears, before we figured out that you have to press and -HOLD- the T button for a few seconds in order to find a station. The instructions only say to press the T button and it will search for stations, which on any other radio means to press and release the scan button so that it will scan to just the next station. There is no indication how long you have to hold the T button down. Pressing it for a second, or pressing it repeatedly, just yields static (IOW it's not scanning). Pressing it for 5 seconds seems to get it to scan to the next station. That said, the other reviewer that said the speaker is not loud enough is correct. At full volume/amplification, even very strong local stations come through at a -very- low volume. Not loud enough to listen to as a radio, which kind of defeats the purpose. 3Fun, but directions for additional projects not very clearWe purchased the Snap Circuits Jr. kit a couple months ago (Christmas present) for our 5 year old son because we thought he'd enjoy it. We underestimated how much: we thought he'd like it, but he LOVES it-- to the point of obsession. He spends hours a day building circuits and really has learned quite a bit. He expressed excitement and enthusiasm for acquiring other kits (he's built every one of the 101 projects in the SC100 kit at least a dozen times at this point...). So when it came time to acknowledge a job well done, I thought this little kit would be a nice reward (some of the snap circuits kits are very expensive; these mini kits seem quite reasonably priced). He was really excited to build a radio because some of the parts are different than what he has in the Jr kit- specifically the adjustable resistor, amplifier, and the FM receiver (plus a higher voltage (4.5v) battery, it runs on 3 AA) they may be redundant for other kits, I'm not sure.In any case, he was very excited, and was able to assemble a working radio in a short time (I helped him the first time, but he subsequently was able to take apart and reassemble by himself no problem). He was delighted. He was really excited about the additional projects, too (there are 3 other circuits you can build from this kit) but the directions are very difficult to understand. The radio circuit is depicted pictorially (as are all 100 circuits in the SC100 kit) but for some reason, the additional projects in this kit are not pictured; there are just written directions and they are difficult to understand. My son is a very proficient reader, so that's not it (even I was having a hard time deciphering the instructions, and I have a college degree). It just seems like a couple more diagrams would make this kit a lot more user friendly. For anyone else with kids that like this kit, check out the SC100 and 300 kits. My son can't wait to upgrade and is asking for the snap rover kit for his birthday in a few months. He's hooked. Overall from both a fun and educational perspective I've been really satisfied with these toys. As far as durability, what we have has been experiencing heavy use for a couple months and so far has held up well. There are little improvements to be made here and there (I also intend to review the SC 100) but overall I think they're great and if the enthusiasm persists, I see us buying more. 4Great giftThis was a birthday present from me to my 10 year old son. At first he was bummed because it wasn't a video game. He opened it up and got to work. It was easy to assemble. He loves it and has asked for more sets! He keeps it on his bed at night and listens to the radio. It gets decent coverage considering our location. 5The radio really works!!My son, just turning 8, received this for his birthday. He does have experience with Snap Circuits, but not this particular set. Within a few minutes, he had it together and music playing on his radio. He was so proud! You can t go wrong with Snap Circuits for kids who are interested in building and electronics. 5Non functioningIt doesn't work. I need to figure out how to return it. My son didn't want to even finish opening presents when he got this, and it didn't work. I remade it very carefully and read and reread the directions and nothing. One of the pieces must be defective. Great idea but if you can't quality control, not cool. AND since I shopped for Christmas early, it can't be returned. I guess I will need to call now. 1Snap Circuits FM Radio picks up 10-20 stations on a 12 inch WireMy 4 year old grandson enjoyed putting the Snap Circuits FM Radio together. It worked great and functioned flawlessly. We do live in the Los Angeles area so there were many stations to listen to. I was amazed how far the "kit" craft had come from the days of "Heathkit".I sat between my 6 yr old grandson and 4 year old grandson while they put together the Snap Circuits Motion Detector and FM Radio. Both kits are just the right size and have fewer pieces to get lost than the big kits but still have enough different experiments to keep them each busy for a 2 hour stint (and that is hard to do with two young boys!). It made for a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Yes I helped them (The box says ages 8-108) but for the first time playing with electronics these kits are great. No soldering iron required just snap each circuit component (housed in a plastic carrier) on a plastic circuit card. The picture instructions made it easy for the boys (and me) to understand how to put it together. You do have to mind the order in which it is assembled however, so guidance is important. Since we didn't complete all the experiments the boys talk about how they want to get back together with "Papa" to complete the experiments. 5it is fine. One must consider that it is an inexpensive ...The kit works! The speaker amplifier distorts a little at high volume but at moderate levels, it is fine. One must consider that it is an inexpensive kit and meant to be a teaching aid for young electronics enthusiasts. One would not expect the sound to be on par with a home entertainment system; hence, the distortion doesn't mean much. Here are two things to be aware of: First, the pictures on the box hide crucial connections so you cannot go by the pictures for assembly. Secondly, there were no instructions in the (my) box. However, I easily found the instructions on the internet. My grandson (8 yrs.) had no trouble following the instructions with my help, and as I said, it worked! It now sits at his bedside and he often listens to it. 3Good kit for young kiddosIt was a fine thing to snap together with my 10 year old niece. I am a ham radio operator (AB1DQ) and she has a fascination in radio. Last summer we built a one tube regen radio kit that involved soldering and winding coils which was a little too complex for a child. I think this kit was a little too simple and could have benefited from more information on how a radio receiver circuit operates. That said, it's really a great idea to introduce the kiddos to electronics. I'd definitely buy other Snap Circuits kits. 3Autoscans for stationsOther reviews are pretty thorough. I'd just like to add that there's no dial to manually scan for stations. Instead, you press a button that scans automatically, which I found disappointing. Autoscanning won't stop for weaker stations, and with no manually dial, it's impossible to find them. Otherwise, it's a great kit. My seven-year-old son loves it and was very excited to build it and to show it off afterward. 4The antenna isn't fantastic, but it does workMy son was excited to get more snap circuits for his 8th birthday! The baseplate that you snap into is a softer plastic, making it difficult to snap pieces into it, which is frustrating. I wonder how long that will hold up, which is the reasoning for the four star rating. The radio pics up FM signal. The antenna isn't fantastic, but it does work.In addition to the FM radio, there are three alternate projects (power amplifier, electronic kazoo, and trombone). There are not diagrams for those three, only written instructions. We have not attempted to build those yet. 4
