Customer Reviews

Required stone fixing out of boxSeems okay so far. Was not flat at all out of the box I had to really work it with a flattening stone before I could use it. Regardless, I got three W sthof knives sharper than they had been. 4Great stone, hAppyI jump up from shapton 2000 to this 8000 stone, dont really need anything in between because it cuts pretty fast. This stone will leave a mirror finish with some micro scratches that will still be present. It will polish an edge to shave hair but i think you would need to strop or go to smaller abrasive for straight razors. 5Perfect!This is an amazing stone. When used appropriately, I find that it cuts more quickly than ceramic files from Spyderco's Sharpmaker and polishes an edge very nicely. I've had it for about two months and have used it to sharpen everything from an axe made of S7 to Striders (s30v), Hinderers (S35VN), and on and on. It even does a good job of touching up the uncarbidized side of titanium blades.Money well-spent in my view. Highly recommend it to others who like making sure their tools possess particularly keen edges. 5Poor manufacturingI've had bad luck with Shapton stones. The 8000 I bought has some kind of impression in it that makes it feel like 220 grit. I tried smoothing it out with a nagara then a rust remover. After rubbing on it for so long I realize it was all the way through the stone. I previously purchased a 6000 and that one arrived with two cracks that went all the way across the stone. The knives would grab onto the cracks when I tried sharpening. After a few months I finally worked it down so that the cracks were smoothed down. I really don't think I'll buy another Shapton glass. 2Now we re polishing !This stone finishes an edge absolutely well . At these polishing grits you won t expect fast cutting nor do you really want it to be so I ll only speak on the feedback and polish .Feedback on the stone is great as for most of my Shaptons but the polish is truly the high point of this stone , this stone is an ideal finishing stone .Razor sharp honing as well .These stones are very slow wearing so the thinness of the stone should be less of a concern especially for their polishing grits . 5Excellent sharpening stonesI love Shapton stones, they remove steel faster than anything else I've tried, and lemme tell you, I've tried a few over the years. They also remain much flatter than standard water stones; downside of course there is that they're harder to flatten. They sell a diamond flattener for like $300+, yeah, I said no to that and just use much cheaper diamond sharpening stones, and that works fine.I now own 220, 1000, 4000, and 8000 Shapton glass stones, and pretty much everything else (diamond and various water stones) except the strop stay in the sharpening drawer. 5Best fine-grit stone you can get! Great for fine woodworking!I've tried a lot of sharpening stones. DMT diamond stones, japanese water stones, oil stones... But these new glass stones are changing the world of sharpening for woodworkers everywhere! The fine grits such as this one are especially amazing for essentially two reasons: they don't soak up water, so they don't have to be ponded like water stones, and they stay flatter and don't wear as fast as water stones. You may think that a diamond stone also has those qualities, and is less expensive, but I can tell you that diamond stones are simply not as good as these! Coarser diamond stones are great, but at higher grits they really suffer, usually scratching your blade up rather than the swarf polishing like how it does for the Shapton glass stones.Basically, I like to use coarse diamond stones (200 to 1000 grit), which stay flat because they don't wear down, plus you can use them to flatten water stones. At about 4000 grit, diamond stones aren't as good, and I am in favor of plain water stones such as King stones (They go out of flat only just slightly faster than the Shaptons, and they don't cut quite as fast, and they have to be ponded before use... But they are cheaper, easier to flatten, last longer because they are so thick, and you can use both sides of them!)But at 8000 grit, Shapton reigns supreme. It just stays flatter longer, cuts so fast, doesn't scratch, and doesn't have to be ponded. This stone seriously cuts like it's a 4000 grit stone, but still polishes like 8000! The size of these stones is perfect, wide enough for jointer plane blades, and plenty of length. This is a stone worth saving your money for! 5Excellent Stone for Woodworking Chisels and PlanesAs I get better at sharpening my chisels and planes my expectations go up. These are crazy expensive so it took a while before I decided to cough up the money, especially when it was unclear how much benefit I'd get.First something funny. I really shouldn't admin this because it makes me look like an idiot, but... when I first used it, I had it upside down! Yeah, just like the picture. I thought the abrasive was somehow translucent. Dope. Anyway, once I figured that out I decided to use the back as the final step and I personally believe it works! In fact, I tried using newspaper after using this and couldn't believe the "gouges" that the paper left as compared to this stone! I use a 14x loupe when inspecting my edge. I highly recommend something like that for learning sharpening. 5a must have in a set of shapton stones. ...a must have in a set of shapton stones. whether your sharpening knives or straight razors. not a finishing stone for razors but maybe one for knives. 5Worth the price in my opinionConsistent, repeatable results. These stones are beautiful and will provide a lifetime of service. I got this stone along with the 500/1000/6000/16000 in order to hone straight razors and tools. Will do kitchen knives as well. These came beautifully boxed directly from japan. I suggest getting the Shapton diamond lapping plate but it's not necessary for initial flattening. These stones are immaculately flat from the factory. 5
