Customer Reviews

Worth the price in my opinion Consistent, repeatable results. These stones are beautiful and will provide a lifetime of service. I got this stone along with the 500/6000/8000/16000 in order to hone straight razors and tools. Will do kitchen knives as well. These came beautifully boxed directly from japan. I suggest getting the Shapton diamond lapping plate but it's not necessary for initial flattening. These stones are immaculately flat from the factory. 5Not happy Item arrived completely broken 1Works Well: Chips Easily Tried many different stones with mixed success. Primary use is kitchen cutlery. This one does work as advertised although I haven't used it more than a couple times. Quickly puts on fine (and lasting) edge without much effort. I finish edge with a steel although I'm guessing that the 3000 - 8000 grit stone would be better for the "scary edge" Note: stone chips easily so treat it with care. 4Awesome glass stone The best stone I've used. I have 5 Shapton stones (500, 1000, 2000, 8000, 16000) and each one is phenomenal. I start with the 1000 if I don't need to fix any chips and it's wonderful. Finish with the 16K. 5Super exotic sharpening stone .. will put a perfect start of super sharp blade With a bit of practice ..very very light pressure is all you need to remove even the hardest Japanese steel 5Doesn't last long enough! Here's a few suggestions for fine woodworkers: I am a professional violin maker (luthier) which means that I have to keep all my tools razor sharp all the time in order to work. After using a huge variety of sharpening stones, such as the full line of DMT diamond sharpening stones, the full line of Shapton glass stones, the full line of King stones, and many other various water stones and a few oil stones over the years, here is what you really need to sharpen all your tools for doing fine woodworking:A Rikon 8 inch slow speed bench grinder (available from Woodcraft at about $140... $100 on sale)A Veritas Grinder Tool Rest (about $50... Grinding Jig ($25) optional)An Extra Coarse 220 grit DMT 8"X3" dia-sharp diamond stone (about $55) OR the Dia-Flat lapping plate (about $200)An Extra Fine 1200 grit DMT 8"X3" dia-sharp diamond stone (about $60)A 4000 grit shapton glass stone (about $80, although you might be able to skip this one if you're persistent with the 8000 grit...)An 8000 girt shapton glass stone (about $100)A 16,000 grit shapton glass stone (about $150, although this one is optional depending on if you want your blades extra-sharp.)a leather strop (make it yourself) with a jewelers rouge of your choice (green chromium oxide is great balance between the speed it cuts and the polished finish it leaves, although the red stuff is finer and the blue stuff is finer still)Notice how I left out the shapton 1000 grit and 220 grit stones. Here is why: The DMT stones at those grits are cheaper, last longer, and stay flat forever. The shapton stones cut a little faster, but that doesn't make them entirely better. I've had my set of shapton glass stones for about 3 years now and sharpening almost every other day has led to the 1000 grit stone being worn down nearly to the glass on back side. All the other stones are fine for a few more years. There is no doubt that this stone wears down faster than all the others, even the 220 grit one. at 4000 grit and above, however, the shapton glass stones are a woodworker's dream; really the best there is. With that said, consider the short list of sharpening tools I have suggested above. With all 8 of those things you should be set for many years of high-quality wood working!P.S. The coarse DMT stones can actually be used to keep your finer grit shapton stones flat! The DMT Lapping plate can't really be used for sharpening unlike the Extra Coarse stone, and it's a bit expensive, but consider this secondary use: It flattens the soles of old planes incredibly fast! Way better than sanding belts or sandpaper spray adhesive'd to a flat surface! 3Right on Time This Shapton Glass Stone 1000 grit is just what I needed! I was working with a 500 grit stone but felt I may be taking to much material off. That may be just my inexperience! My Stone got here on time and in perfect condition! Thank you! 5Buy Sharpton if you want quality Sharpton stones are excellent. I use this in shear sharpening. 5Buy it Great all around stone 5poor quality. poor quality . no recommend. 1
