Customer Reviews

High Failure rate...50% in 2 years I am beginning to suspect the reliability of Seagate. I originally bought 4 of these for my file/cloud server about 2 years ago. This is the second replacement of the 4. The first one failed about 3 months ago. Only two more and I will have a 100% failure. I am not using them in a harsh environment. They are not constantly in use either. This is primarily a backup server for photos and documents that is only access 2-3 times per month. This is an extremely high failure rate. 2Buyer beware - old stock, with only three weeks of warranty right out of the box. Beware! They are selling old stock.Bought this from the Amazon website just a few days ago. Arrived July 20, 2016. The drive is in an antistatic shield bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, contained in a plain brown cardboard box, inside the Amazon box. No Seagate packaging.Entered serial number on Seagate's website. This is what was shown: Serial Number Z5005G8T Part Number 1ER166-300 Warranty Expiration 31-Aug-2016I'm not too hopeful... 1Another Great Performer I have used Seagate desktop hard drives for a long time. They have always performed well and have surpassed expected life expectancy every time. I expect that this drive will do the same. While some have commented that the drive they received was a refurbished unit, mine had only a few hours on it which I attribute to manufacturing and final testing. It also has a current date code. So far this drive has met my expectations. The drive arrived properly packed and performed right out of the box. I couldn t ask for anything better. I recommend this drive with 5 stars as there is nothing that I don t like about it. The price is right and the performance is there! 5Not a happy customer. 3 mo & 5 days old. HDD failure. I used Seagates 'SeaTools' which gave me a quick Fail using the 'Short DST' test. It suggested that I perform a long generic test and that it can fix failed sectors. 11hrs Later, the long generic test past. So I re-ran the 'Short DST' test and it failed again. Nothing in the log file about what failed beyond the 'Short DST' test failed. So I started the warranty process - after all this page indicates a 3yr limited warranty, and online it indicates a 2yr limited warranty (90 day for everything in the box and 2yrs for the main product.) Well seagates warranty tool indicates that my HDD is out of warranty. And I can't find any other details on their website about how to contact them. After all I just received the HDD 3mo & 5 days before writing this. I've had many HDD over the years and I've had failures but none this early, and any that were within the warranty period have always been addressed appropriately. Not a happy customer. 1Within four weeks three of the four drives are reporting bad sectors and one has just "failed/crashed" (NAS warning) Bought (5) of these as they are the drive "certified" to work with the NAS I was upgrading. I have (4) of them in the NAS and (1) is a spare. Within four weeks three of the four drives are reporting bad sectors and one has just "failed/crashed" (NAS warning). My RAID array is now degraded and I will be switching out with the spare today. Wanted to get this out there as a warning to others. Not having good luck with these drives.EDIT: - WARNING - ALL FIVE DRIVE I RECEIVED ARE USED DRIVES SOLD AS NEW they have as much as 4.2 years of power-on time. 1Refurbished drive sold as new! Drive works, BUT (and that's a BIG but) Crystal-Disk-Info reports the drive has 14663 power-on hours!!!The fact that this drive is refurbished (aka USED) should definitely be mentioned in the advertisement! 2No Warranty from Seagate. No Warranty. Entering these serial numbers into the Seagate website shows that the drives are not warranted as "new" at all.Nothing about this sale page declares this, so it seems to me to be borderline fraudulent. I didn't check until after backing up all my data though, so not worth it for me to send them back. Be aware, though, that this is the case.Ironically, if you buy "used" drives from amazon warehouse at a similar or lower price, they in theory have no warranty, but the serial numbers show a valid warranty on the Seagate verification website. So guess what I'm buying instead. 1It acted funny from the start This was the second of the two I ordered. It acted funny from the start. It would act fine for a while then without warning it just wouldn't show up on the system. I tried many things to make sure it was the drive and not anything else. After two weeks of trying I realized it had to be the drive. It was very frustrating. I will need a new drive. I realize that this is the drives fault not faulting Seagate. They are still batting 500 here. So I am open to trying a new one. There has been a twist since I wrote this review. I went t return it to Seagate and I noticed that the warranty had expired 3 years before I registered this drive. How does a warranty expire 3 years before the date of registration. I wish I knew. It would be so easy to blame Seagate but I really am not sure how this happened because I bought this drive only a month ago. I will not be replacing this drive with any other drive made by Seagate and just to make sure this doesn't happen again I also will not buy anything from the same seller. 1Used drive sold as new! This product is presented as new. I purchased it a couple of weeks ago and just noticed some serious issues. First it will not pass the SMART test on my Synology NAS. This got me digging a little deeper and the drive shows over 23000 power on hours. This means this is not a new drive! 23000 hours is almost as many hours as my original drives have and they have been in service for years!!! 1Good price, but defective The product received had a manufacture date of 10/2011 (I purchased this in Nov. 2016), and appeared used. Once installed and formatted, the drive started exhibiting issues almost immediately: trouble copying to/from, when attempting to scan for issues it would hang the OS and require a hard reboot. I'm returning this for a refund. 1
