Customer Reviews

Trouble-free replacement to One of Five DOA Problem This was an exact model replacement to an identical model drive that failed to initialize and S.M.A.R.T. This replacement drive has had no issues and is running fine in a Synology DS1511+ NAS with four other identical model drives. They are fast and quiet.Amazon's RMA process is the best. I simply chose to return a drive as part of the options on my order. I was able to print a pre-paid UPS return label and Amazon simultaneously shipped this replacement drive. I got the replacement drive two days before UPS tracking showed Amazon received the faulty one.I suppose this is as much a review of Amazon's RMA process as it is the product itself. I am happy with both. From what I can tell in these reviews, many people will have to RMA the hard drives. Seagate has an above average policy for warranty, but if the problem happens within Amazon's return policy it is that much easier to take care of.You should definitely get the product out of the box and burning-in on a system ASAP to expose any problems. 5So Far, So Good. I have to say I was very nervous about buying this. So many buyers reporting so many problems with hard disk drives from practically all manufacturers. Some of the manufacturer explanations about rough transport seemed plausible, but too often used as the go to reason. They cannot all have been handled by the Samsonite Gorilla. Mine came in the Seagate cardboard box with the anti impact plastic caps at each end. The Seagate box was inside another larger cardboard box containing other items I ordered. I intentionally did not order the drives one by themselves in order to force there to be another box and packaging around the Seagate box. The drives were in anti-static bags. So my out of box experience was excellent. I ground strapped my right wrist and my right ankle to true electrical ground and also electrically grounded my system box. Three of these are in my pc. I also have a fourth in a Thermaltake Max 5 eSATA external drive enclosure hooked to my SetTop cable box DVR for overflow of TV programs. The pc based drives get moderate use. The DVR setup is used a little more than the PC, but only a few hours a day. Honestly, there's not that much on TV worth watching. :-) All of the drives so far have been reliable, quiet, no complaints whatsoever. On the PC they are very fast. If you can get one on sale, they are relatively obsolete now, it is worth the try if it has not been abused. Handle with care and use ground straps and true grounds. Recommended even though it is older. I would buy again if needed. If no longer available I would try the Constellation 3 3.5 series because they have a bigger cache. 5 Star for me. Hope they work for you too. 5This is good - when it works So this went on sale for around $46 a few weeks ago and since I needed some extra space, I decided to pick one up (or order it, rather). I had read reviews on it prior to buying it and people said it wasn't very reliable, but since my primary hard drive had comments like that and it has worked perfect for me, I thought hey, my other one worked regardless of other peoples' comments, this one should too. Boy was I wrong. For the first few days, I didn't really use it a whole lot, because I was playing it safe so I wouldn't lose anything if it did die on me. Well, I started using it more and more, and I started recording my gameplay videos straight to it using Fraps, which should not affect anything. Everything was going smooth until I had been recording for about an hour when my second hard drive (this one) decided to just crash on me. I closed everything and checked My Computer; the hard drive didn't show up. After freaking out a bit, I restarted my computer and checked it again, this time the second drive showing up. I didn't think too much of it, but I definitely kept it in mind.Since then, the hard drive has "crashed" or whatever 3 or so times and let me tell you, it gets quite annoying. Today I was copying around 228 GB of video from my external hard drive to the second drive (this one) and after about 30 minutes of copying, the drive failed once again. I really don't know what is going on. I don't know if it's how I have it set up or if the hard drive itself is just a crappy drive. Whatever it is, it's not good.To summarize this, just get a different drive and save yourself the time and money. Don't think like I did. Read reviews carefully and make the right choice so you don't end up writing a bad review, like myself. lol 2Quiet, fast, value 1TB Seagate internal HDD I got this Seagate internal hard drive with the Amazon gold box deal of a sweet $46.99 price. A price range of $47 - $60 is very good for a 1TB hard drive that also has 7200 rpm and 6gb/s.So far, after about a week's usage, I've experienced faster loading and data transfer. It has been only a week but I will update in couple months whether the drive performs well or fails (I'm hoping I won't need to update you all regarding failures).-Personally for me, I used this drive as a secondary drive for my PC. I installed Windows 7 on a Western Digital 500 GB Caviar Blue SATA 3 Gb/s 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD5000AAKS. I install programs, games, and add movies to this as a secondary hard drive so that I could load quickly for my PC. If you have any trouble installing this hard drive as a secondary drive, here are instructions on how I did it:1) Connect the Sata power and sata cable before turning on the PC2) Load up your BIOS to make sure your computer reads it3) If your computer loads up and it reads the drive, then you're fine. Horray 931GB of storage. If you don't see the seagate drive available yet, update the drive with Seagate's firmware for this product. Here's the link : [...]4) After finishing up the firmware update (perhaps will need to restart), Search for Disk management, or under Administrative Tools reading "Create or format hard disk partitions." From there you should see the Seagate 1TB hard drive. Now you should be able to format the hard drive and you're good to go.Overall, I'm fairly happy so far. It's very quiet for a hard drive that has 1Tb and is 7200rpm. 5It just works! Everything I can say is in the title, It just works! Really that's it. I bought this drive as my data drive in what I call the beast!I load as many applications as I have the ability to, in a "Program Files" directory on this drive. My main drive is a 240Gig SSD and loads Windows 7 Professional in 10 seconds flat! But this drive serves up Apps, videos and pictures very fast, especially when it doesn't have to deal with the OS as well.Buy it, or it's kin. Great drive! The beast: (Everything but the Cooler Master was bought on Amazon)ASUS LGA 1155 Z68 PCIe 3.0 P8Z68-V PRO/GEN2Intel Core i7-2700K 3.5GHz LGA 1155Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler (RR-212E-20PK-R2)Corsair Vengeance 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz PC3EVGA GeForce GTX 580 3072 MB GDDR5OCZ Agility 3 240 GB SATA 6GB/s 525MB/s Read 2.5 InchSeagate Barracuda 7200.12 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s with NCQ 32MB Cache 3.5 InchWindows 7 Professional 5Glitchy after 4 months (edit: later died) When I first purchased and installed this hard drive into a new computer I was building, I was glad because it worked well. That was back in May. It is September now and this hard drive is beginning to show signs of failing...I have twice lost my session with Windows as my entire hard drive temporarily crashes. The computer will then go to the "insert boot disk" screen so I know it is no longer detecting the hard drive. Kinda bummed because I am building another computer in a month and no longer feel confident in recommending this HD any longer. If it eventually crashes I will be sure to update this review.EDIT: This HDD ended up dying less than 2 years from this original review, giving it a total lifespan of just over 2 years. Won't boot up, and is impossible to get any data off of it. Just do yourself a favor and spring for a SSD instead. 2Easy install, good performance I used this 1TB drive to replace a 750GB drive (also Seagate Barracuda 7200) in an HP All In One. It was pretty easy to remove and replace, using the instructions found on the net. It's quiet, and just as responsive as the other one was. Because it's such a large drive, some operations such as formatting, surface scans, etc., take a while. The previous (750GB) drive was having intermittent failures and nothing helped, so I rebuilt the system on the 1TB drive. It took me about 10 hours to rebuild, including applying 160 or so Win7 updates. There's some stuff on the old drive that's not fully backed up, so I will have to get it moved if possible. Anyway, I'm very happy with the new drive and its performance. It came in a double box with absolutely no paper, but installation was so simple it didn't matter (and saved some landfill space). 5It's on... I still haven't decided who makes the best drives, Seagate or Western Digital. But I do know this, it's a dead heat race.I am currently using 3 Seagate and 3 WD drives. The Seagate drives are very quiet and fast, and I haven't had one fail on me in 10 years (since I stopped buying computers and building my own) but you have to temper that knowledge with the fact that these drives are spinning at 7200 RPM so I always have a cooling fan on my drives. I learned the hard way some years ago and lost tons of critical data. I'll buy more of their drives in the future because they are proven to me as fast, quiet and reliable. 4Does the job, hard to screw up a 3.5" normal drive these days. Does the job, hard to screw up a 3.5" normal drive these days. I use it for a spare machine I run BOINC on, so I don't have much to go on other than that it works.Seems to me like it's a little loud, but I may just be used to my SSD's silence nowadays. 5Manufacturer warrantee When I registered the drives on the Seagate website, it states I have no warrantee from Seagate. So it would seem Seagates' Warrantee is based on what they consider "end of life", not purchase date. I have been contacted by the reseller and they provide a two year warrantee. I find the price per value to be very good, no issues so far. 4
