Customer Reviews

When it works, it's great. When it works, it's great. The OBDLink software is pretty "meh" but I run it with Torque and am pretty happy with that. My biggest gripe is that my phone will fail to connect about once a week and it takes all kinds of resetting to get everything to sync back up. Doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to the drops and it's not a simple matter of unpairing the device and starting over. When sync'd though, the data is fast and accurate. 3Worked okay, for about 2 weeks Then, I got a notification that there was a firmware update for this unit after using it for about 2 weeks. I followed the directions for installing the update but it failed. Now the OBDLink LX has been rendered useless. I followed the instructions on the ScanTool forum to factory reset the unit, but that didn't work. I followed the instructions (also on the ScanTool forum) for recovering from a firmware update failure and this didn't work either. This thing is garbage. Look for something else, the OBDLink LX is a waste of your money. 1Once installed does what it is meant to. I found this unit a little tricky to get connected to with my laptop once I had it installed on the vehicle. You need to go to the website and read the instructions carefully. After installing the unit you connect to it via Bluetooth on your laptop, then use the software connecting via a serial link, not Bluetooth. Once I got past that everything worked great. I was able to read and reset my error codes. You can watch "live" results and do other real time trouble shooting, but I have not used it in this capacity so I can not comment on how well that works. It seems that you would be able to purchase "better" software to interpret the codes better, the base software does not give a very detailed explanation of the results. A bit of googling will get you what you need though. For the price I can't complain. I am able to save trips and dollars going to a mechanic to find out why my check engine light is on. 4Slow data rates limit the utility of this product I purchased this scan tool to analyze 3-5 PIDs simultaneously on my vehicle. I had previously purchased a cheap knockoff version but was unhappy with the slow PID read rate, especially when monitoring a few PIDs simultaneously (~1 PID/sec). The Scantool OBDLink LX is advertised as significantly faster--Torque Pro team highly recommends it and states a 100 PID/sec data rate. You can imagine my disappointment when upon receiving and trying the OBDLink LX I was only able to achieve 8 PID/sec when monitoring one channel, and monitoring 3 PID's gave a rate of 4 PID/sec. While this was a slight improvement over the competition, it is significantly lower than the claimed '4x' improvement by ScanTool and definitely slower than the '100 PID/sec' measured by Torque Pro. I also tried using ScanTools in-house app, "OBDLink", but the results were no better than when using Torque.I have included my technical details below, and would be more than happy to improve my review if ScanTool can provide some support. I looked through the ScanTool forums and FAQ and couldn't find any solutions, information on PID data rates, or a good way to contact them directly. If you are from ScanTool and are reading this--please help! If you are a potential customer--steer clear if you need to monitor multiple PIDs with a frequency > 1 Hz.Vehicle: 2016 Subaru WRXDevice: OBDLink LX BluetoothPhone OS: AndroidApp: Torque Pro and OBDLink (4.0.0) 1Easy to use 1. This is my first OBD experience with any device and I saved me over $300 in labor costs in the first 10 minutes. Works very well for diagnosing codes. Within 10 minutes of receiving this device, I was connected and found the error code to my problem.2. Easy to use; I work in IT and am familiar with Bluetooth connections to my cell phone, and if you can connect a Bluetooth headset/speaker to your android phone then you can use this app. I saw previous reviewers say there are issues with connectivity, but from my 10+ years of IT experience, I can say this Bluetooth device works just like all other ones. You just need to know the procedure on how they work.3. I do see that there are other devices out there that cost ~$20 about half the price of this one, however, I can attest to the fact that this is a well-made device and includes free apps that do everything I need. The fact this was built to last and can be left plugged in all the time is a huge bonus.4. There is an airbag light flashing on my dash but no error codes were found. after looking into this some more I found that the problem is not due to OBDLink but a common issue with my car not displaying error codes on an airbag light. 5This products causes engine light issue I had to say there was a problem with this product. It worked as described at first, but I found out later there was an issue on my car caused by this product. My car (Chevy Malibu 2012) showed its engine light on, and I brought it to a repair shop. They diagnosed it, and changed oil, filter etc and charged me a lot. However the engine light showed up again soon later. So I needed to brought my car back to them. They were not able to figure out the issue. Then I brought the car to another repair shop. At fist they couldn't figure our either, but said this product might cause the problem. I was surprised because I thought ODBLink only read signal from car and did not produce any signal to car. However I follow the service man's advice and removed ODBLink. And the engine lump never show up again. Also when I re-installed it, the light showed up again, meaning this product actually caused the problem.I was so frustrated as I paid a lot of unnecessary repair/maintenance fee to repair shops. 1Bricked after first use I got this unit as it has the highest rating, but only after about 10 minutes of using it I got promoted to install new firmware, which I did, resulting in immediate "bricking" of the scanner. The manufacturer only has a user forum for general discussion, so no direct help is available. Ended up returning and buying a different one.As for the app that comes with it - not too great - I had problems connecting to the scanner and then getting the scanner to communicate with the ECU - for a pretty pricey and highly rated piece I would expect a better integration. 1Save yourself repeated trips to the mechanic The mechanic reset my code and said it was a faulty reading, well it was but that is because it wasn't detecting the blown spark plugs. After buying this I was able to get a better idea and locate the case of my issues.I really enjoy this so far, but I wish i had a better way to secure it in my vehicle. I may end up having to tape it into place to get live results without it falling out[may just be my vehicle?]. The software is very good and just had a firmware upgrade to the unit; which is a pleasant surprise and makes me feel more confident i made the right purchase. 4Basic tool nothing more It works but the manufacturer fails to tell buyer that to get more than "basic" function you need to purchase their more expensive software that costs as much if not more than the "scan tool". When factoring in the more expensive software you can purchase a better quality dedicated scan tool from several manufacturers. 3It was extremely easy to use EXACTLY as advertised!!! It was extremely easy to use! And the app is easy too! I'm not a tech type but was able to set this up & clear my dummy lights in a couple of minutes. I was able to understand why my dummy lights were on then clear them. FINALLY! It was minor stuff anyway. I have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner. Now I have this cool, versatile device and will never have to wonder why my dummy lights come on. It has several other cool features besides the diagnostics. This is a must have in my opinion! LOVE IT 5
