Customer Reviews

Spigot weakness at threaded area This product had a design flaw. I have owned many 7 gallon containers and do some remote traveling. At the point that the spigot screws into the collar, due to the threading, the material is thinner and is subject to breaking. In order to get a good seal and for the container to not leak at the spigot where it screws in, it is necessary to screw it in to the point that it no longer leaks - tightly. After using a spigot and cap several times, with assembling and disassembling, the described point weakens and breaks. Hence, the need for yet another spigot. I have replaced all of my spigots at least 2 times each over a several year period. This is a good container system, but the weakpoint needs to be thickened. I would do this by decreasing the internal diameter of the spigot and leaving more (thicker) material in the threaded area. 1Good, simple, cheap. Not quite water-tight though. Use the 7-gal container for storage and transport. Sits in the sun a lot, and over several years, the spigot finally crumbled to pieces. Bought this here because stores don't carry the replacement. Using it with the spigot on the inside of the tank when in storage or transit. Works great. However, not quite water-tight, so when transporting it lying down, I stuff the corner of a towel into the opening the spigot is already screwed into from the inside. That does the trick. Sure, I could use teflon tape, but then I'd have to put on fresh tape every time I unscrew/rescrew the spigot from the indoe (storage position) to the outside, pouring position in the screw-on lid.Yea, I know, but when you buy this (and you should) you'll see what I'm talking about. Only reason why only 4 stars, not 5. 4Didn't fit with Reliance Rhino container... It may work fine on containers it is designed for, but what I don't like is Amazon combining it with containers it is not meant to work with. Not sure how to reflect my disappointment in Amazon rather than the product itself. It isn't obvious that this assembly doesn't fit certain same brand containers. If you have a container that this does match with, then the product is probably fine. But beware if you're getting this combined with Reliance Rhino-pak, etc. because this doesn't fit those. 2Does not fit the Reliance Rhino-Pak 5.5 container I should have done more research; I can't remember if I searched for this, or if Amazon recommended it as a combo purchase. I bought this thinking it would fit my grey Rhino-Pak 5.5 gal container, but it is too large. The replacement vent cap is the same, so at least I get something out of it. Just leaving this review in case anybody else was thinking of getting the same combo. According to Q&A on that container, Reliance doesn't make a smaller spigot that would fit that. 3Total fail of a design.Reliance makes great water containers. I love that the square design doesn't easily roll when being transported and that they can be used without needing some kind of base, but the spigots are a total fail. I bought 2 five gallon Reliance containers, using one at a time on our counter for drinking water. Within 6 months, both spigots were leaking. I bought 2 replacement spigots and one started leaking immediately. The other, a few months later. Same with the next replacements. I have seen them fail at every possible place they could leak: At the large thread which screws onto the bottle, the small thread in the center, and at the spigot, itself. They are simply designed poorly. Luckily, I had an old unused spigot of a different design laying around, and it screwed into the Reliance spigot base perfectly, or I'd be without a usable bottle right now.1Big improvement over the original! Much better than the ones that came with the water jug. They have fixed the design flaw that cause the spigot handle to break so easily. Got mine for $4.99. Wait and the price will come down, don't pay $10.00. For those who say it leaks, you have to screw the faucet into the lid tightly and then make sure the lid is screwed very tight to the container. 5Works but... I have a number of Reliance water containers, they all leak enough that you can't leave them sitting with the spigot on the side. I was hopeful when I learned that the spigot had been redesigned. I purchased the replacement kit and tried it out. First the new air inlet plug and cover where not as good as the original. The plug is too small so I used the original. The new spigot cover does thread onto the old container but not as well as the old one. The spigot itself does not leak (yay), but the cover does unless you twist it on very very tightly, so tightly that you will curse the setup when you have to remove the cap and invert the spigot for travel mode. I'm guessing that you might be better off to buy a new water container. 3Reliance Products Replacement Spigot Assembly I'm giving this 3 stars because I continually have to replace these spigots for the Reliance Water Containers. I love the containers themselves, they seem to last forever, have been using them for 30 or 40 years, can't remember it's been too long. The containers, of various styles and types that take this spigot are good containers and stand up to a lot of use, not abuse. And I love the convenience of the spigots, they're so handy around camp. BUT, I've had to replace the spigot assembly countless times on different jugs, I own several, and am now ready to actually write the company and tell them they need to beef up there assembly, the CAP PART SPECIFICALLY, that the spigot screws into. This is the part that always cracks and then you have a leaking jug and it's pretty much worthless until you replace the cracked cap. All the other parts seem to do OK, so I have a lot of spare parts for the other stuff. All I really need is the cap part, that's the one that fails. So I always carry an extra spigot assembly with me. This should not be happening. They'd probably say I'm over tightening it or something, but I worked for a water dept. for 30 years and know you don't do that. You have to tighten it enough to not leak while at the same time not over tightening. But sometimes the spigot doesn't line up for you to use the jug in the way you're suppose to, with it laying down and the outlet of the spigot in the downward position. So sometimes I use some Teflon tape so it won't leak and you don't over tighten. But, alas, the cap still wants to crack. There's just something weak about that part. They may last a good long while, but then you never know when it's going to split, so I recommend you to carry a spare. Maybe one of these days I'll get tired of buying these replacement assemblies and look for another brand of water jug to see how long one lasts. 3Does not fit standard 6-gal jug 5 stars for the Reliance jugs. 2 stars for the caps. This spigot does not fit the 6-gal blue Desert Patrol container, which is annoying to discover while packing for a backcountry trip. Honestly, why do there have to be so many versions and opening sizes for this product line? It makes my head hurt trying to find replacement caps and spigots. 2Replacement hardware for my 20-year-old Reliance container has some slight improvements and works great. Replacement hardware for my 20-year-old Reliance 7-gallon water container. A few years ago the original spigot became harder and harder to open, last year the vent cap retainer broke off.. So I finally broke down and purchased this replacement kit. The new spigot hardware is a slightly different design, and appears to be ergonomically improved over the 20-year-old, there's even a small arrow indicating where to turn the handle to open the water flow.. The retainer for the vent cap is redesigned as well. Overall it's great, hopefully it will last another 20 years! 5Easy Replacement GeneralI purchased these to replace the tops on two of my Aquatainers I bought for my preps. The original ones after about 2 years of service the original ones became brittle and broke.ProsThey were easy to install and get out of the package.ConsThey seem to be made out of the same type of plastic and thickness. I am concerned that may have the same issues as the originalsRecommendationsI would only buy these again if I keep my aquatainers. I probably will change my containers to a different type. 3
