    Great crimpers for CAT6 I wanted a set of crimps that were made of metal and would last a long time. These certainly met my needs perfectly. Usage is straightforward, and every crimp so far has been solid.The round sheathing cutter is a bit deep, so I have to be careful not to squeeze tightly. It may be due to the gauge of the wire I was using.The RJ45 crimp is snug, so it takes a little tug to get it out after crimping, but I've never had one actually get stuck in it.I used this with "Cable Matters 100-Pack Cat 6/Cat6 RJ45 Modular Plugs (RJ45 Plugs) for Stranded UTP Cable" from Amazon, and NavePoint 23AWG UTP CAT 6 cable purchased elsewhere. 5It works, but there's maybe better This product works just fine for what it says it does, but it is lacking in a couple of ways.First of all, if you just want to cut a wire, the ratcheting part doesn't allow you to just slide a wire between the handles to the cutter. So you'd have to thread the wire though, which is fine if you're making a 3' wire, but if 30 feet? You need to cut with another tool first. Not a big deal, but still... why not make this easier for just one tool?Also, if I had to do it again, (and I may bet another anyway), I'd use a 'pass through' solution. I got this just to make some home DIY cables to specific length. Maybe I'm just slow, but it sometimes takes me 2-3 tries to get one right. My understand is with the pass though things you can see the wires come out the correct places before you cut/crimp.All that said, in fairness, this does work to do what it says. I have successfully made a bunch of cables. It's just a bit of a hassle. 3Not recommended I respect Klein tools and expected this crimper to work as well as their other tools I use, but I was disappointed in it. The worst part is that it flattens out the tabs on the Allen Tel mod plugs we use. I don t want to use a crimper that damages the plug, so I guess this one will be relegated to emergency use only in case I get caught without my normal crimper.Pros:- compact design- crimps linearly, putting equal pressure on all 8 pins at the same time, unlike some of the cheap crimpers that put more pressure on the pins closer to the hinge- color code is printed right there on the crimper- ratchet holds the crimper closed when not in use- cable stripper works well for cat 6Cons:- flattens out the tab!- plug does not click into place, so it isn t intuitive that you have to push it in so far, and if you crimp it while it s not fully inserted it will ruin the plug. Only takes once to see the mistake and see how to do it right, but it s not as intuitive as others- cable cutter must be used with the scrap end facing the right way. If you do it backwards the stripper cuts into the conductors & damages them. 2Finally, crimpers I can use comfortably THESE ARE AMAZING. Unless you're on the EZ RJ-45 hype train, grab these. They're compact, have flawless and smooth ratchet action, and the build quality is top notch. Only terminated 20 plugs so far but none have failed. I had middling expectations, just wanted to try a different style of crimper. I literally gave away my traditional styled fluke crimpers to a good friend who needed a pair. These things are that fantastic. I was worried about getting some cheap knockoff like other reviews state, but I got a legitimate Klein pair. One more note, I have childishly small hands (which is why I wanted to try these) so I enjoy the compact size, but they are smaller than they look in the picture. Just be aware of that if you have human sized hands.This review is for the Compact Ratcheting crimpers. 5Just as good as my old ideals pros and cons. Bought this to replace my ideal crimper. I lost the rubber grips from it, so I decided to go with the Klein this time. I still have both and the both are comparable. The cutting and stripping functions on these are more of "I'm in a ceiling and I don't want to climb down to get other tools" type of thing. They cut, but it's somewhat cumbersome to use. A good set of scissors or dikes or linesmans are better suited for the job. A razor or a spin blade is best for getting the jacket off. It always seems that cable is too big (nicks the conductors) or too small (doesn't sever the jacket and it tears off. Always had the same issues with ideal crimper. 5The ratchet mechanism on the crimper is defective. I do not recommend it With tools like this I generally prefer to buy them at the normal big hardware stores. It isn't that the prices are better, or that you get the item immediately, it's that you can return the item if something is wrong.I have spent quite some time wiring my house, but I've been on a spree where I've been adding several new IP cameras to my existing setup. Doing the work myself involves quite a bit of running back and forth between being outside on a ladder with poles and a box of wire, and crawling around in an attic. Occasionally forgetting to carry my rotary cutter and crimper from place to place adds up. The easy solution was to just get extra tools and not lug them back and forth.I've run a lot of cable for personal use, and a decent amount at work, too. Though I am NOT a low-voltage wiring professional, I've used enough crimpers to have an idea of what I do and don't like. I'm precariously perched on ladders or folded awkwardly into enough small spaces to have developed a preference for ratchet-type crimpers. I like rubber grips, and I prefer a front-loading mechanism. The cutting blades need to be replaceable, and the screws should be easily accessible.So, you probably know that this item is not really what I wanted (and I knew that when I purchased it). I was shooting for a price point, since this is essentially my backup crimper, so I was willing to forego front-loading for side loading (a byproduct of it crimping multiple RJ types). So why two stars? Well, the ratchet mechanism doesn't work consistently. It's not that the ratchet won't release, it's that it won't catch more than 20% of the time. It's essentially a crimper without the ratchet function. It could be that my unit is defective, but that would still be an indictment of the quality control, no?Otherwise, the tool appears to be of reasonable quality. I have a few Klein tools, which have all been fine. As I said, YMMV, but I did not have a good experience with this particular item. 2Damaged my expensive shielded connectors. NOT good Klein! Cannot even cut 23 gauge CAT6A wires without bending them and forcing an additional tool. It also crushes the rear of shielded CAT6A connectors that are about 2bux a pop! SO this ruined 5 connectors before I realized I was doing NOTHING wrong, and that the tool was NOT designed for CAT6A shielded. I got the orange handle tool and removed the rear pin, which is not removable on the Klein. That allowed for proper crimping. But the cutter not being clean cut is ZERO excuse. 1Excellent tool, but slightly tricky with 4 or 6 pin connectors This tool does an excellent job of crimping 4, 6, or 8 pin modular connectors. It provides good leverage, and the ratchet feature prevents the connector from slipping out until the crimp is complete.The only drawback is that extra care is need to strip 1/4" of outer insulation from 4-pin and 6-pin connectors. 8-pin cables can be cut and stripped of 1/2" outer jacket in one operation, but the narrow ones must be cut first (if necessary) with another tool. To strip a 4 or 6 pin cable, insert it at the end of the stripper slot closest to the handles, and make sure it enters the slot only as far as the narrow stop on the side toward the handles. This will remove 1/4" of outer jacket. 4so If you are a diy'er this set may be perfect for you I do low volt, so If you are a diy'er this set may be perfect for you. When using these all day, it is annoying that the cutting feature is not that great. I have to basically use two tools to make a cat 5. This tool to strip, and clamp, my scissors to make a clean cut.If Klein redesigned this to also make precision cuts, this wold be an amazing tool. 3Works great after getting used to it! I originally didn't like this crimper, as I've been using traditional style crimpers for over a decade. After terminating about 50 connections in one sitting, I've come to like this thing. The type of grip seems to provide more control than a standard crimping tool (even the Klein traditional crimper, which is my previous go-to). The cuts are clean and even. My only complaint is that the tool does not strip thin (non riser or pull rated) cable, as it doesn't close tight enough to make contact with cheap cable jackets (and the reason for 4 stars). I will probably order the pass-through version of this crimper in the future. 4
