Customer Reviews

Great design, Cheap plastic broke immediately One of the most usable work lights I've found. Bright, variable, comfortable. We live on a working ranch in Arizona where night chores can be dangerous - and critical . A good light is our most precious tool. Our life can depend on it. The first 2 Princeton Tex Apex's I bought lasted about 6 years; then the plastic innards started breaking. With epoxy fixes I kept it going another year. Now I have given up. The brand new one I just bought broke immediately; the bottom screw latch came out of battery compartment and now the plastic head strap groove snapped off. Cheap plastic. Very disappointing as I spent near $80 for it with taxes. This is a big investment for me, Great idea and design. Poor, cheap plastic. Could be made much tougher. 2Happy with the Apex Happy with the Apex. I jog with my dog every AM for about 45 min to an hour. I use rechargeable AA batteries (Best Duracell rechargeable AA's I can find are about $12.00) and the brightest setting is as good as a single car headlamp. The battery easily lasts for the whole time I'm out. Very bright beam, heavy but balances well on my head. Really like the Apex so far. Highly recommend.Update 12-16-15 - I did find this exact same thing $7.85 cheaper on another website. Ended up buying one there too so I would have a spare head lamp. Finally, Panasonic K-KJ17KHCA4A Eneloop Pro rechargable AA batteries work great with the head lamp. Will run it at least two hours on the highest setting before needing a recharge. 5An effective tool! I wore out my first one and now have two more. The wires coming out of my first unit deteriorated (and could have been designed better, hence the 4-stars).Good point by the reviewer who advised securing the o-ring with gasket sealer ...I used a dab of silicone. The other reviewers are correct, constantly using the high beam spot will suck down the batteries ...but I have found the LED modes are plenty bright for almost anything.I use mine with a mule pack-string in rough conditions and the high-beam spot is excellent for occasionally checking the rearmost animals no matter what the conditions snow/fog/rain. When we turn on headlamps we leave them on; its too hard for their eyes to adjust back and forth. With fresh batteries, during dark winter pack out rides of 5 or 6 hours I have never run out of power. If I leave it on spot too long the unit will flash reminding me I am hogging power.Perhaps the handiest feature is the pinhole sized power strobe below the spot lens. I believe it may be a battery status feature but you will love it when you wake up in the middle of the night and need to find the headlamp.AA batteries are also a real plus; too many headlamps operate with AAA batteries which don't have as much reserve. 4... one had for years (appx 3 yr) used to camp hunt foul weather great spotlight nice leds no worries then it died bought ... bought onehad for years (appx 3) and used tocamp hunt all types of weathergreat spotlight nice leds no worriesthen it died bought another-figured three years was good for old one didn't owe me anythinghardly used new light (maybe 10 times to walk the dog)new light lasted 6 months :-( not abused at all...sent light back to princeton for warranty repair or replace...after about 2 months just received my NEW replacement light. :-)great customer service at princeton tec- always responded to my emails requesting status of the warranty ....did buy another headlamp...but happy to have the Apex back- moral here is when doing anything in backcountry always have a backup. The Apex is a great headlamp and Princeton Tec was very easy to work with. 3 stars now. 3Excellent Customer Service / Warranty I purchased a TecApex in 2009 and recently it stopped working. I went back on Amazon to purchase another and After seeing other reviewers write about the life time warranty, I figured I'd send it to Princeton and see if they honored it. I spoke with customer service who issued an RMA and I mailed it back to them. I also purchased a new one, this time with RED leds as this headlamp is my favorite. After a couple weeks, Princeton honored their lifetime warranty and replaced my 4+ year old TecApex with a new one. Any company that offers and honors a lifetime warranty gets five starts from me! 5My favorite headlamp to date I am a biologist and do all of my fieldwork at night and mostly in the rain. I rely on headlamps, and have for 20 years. This headlamp is perfect for the kind of work that I do. Very bright, good battery life, easy to use and very durable. I appreciate the simple functionality of the two buttons. one button turns on the super bright LED and the other button turns on the more diffuse 4 LEDs - and one button is bubble shaped and the other has four little dimples, so you can tell which is by feel. Also, each light type has two settings, max and regular brightness. One note, on max brightness, the super bright LED will use up the batteries within a couple hours - but that's fine, I don't view that setting as being for continual use anyways. its only if you need to see something further away briefly. I own four of these headlamps now and use them all the time. Two of the ones I own have the green diffuse LEDs and those are much less useful - for me anyways. The diffuse white LEDs are super useful for most around the house/garage uses. For my research, I've used these headlamps for probably hundreds of hours in light mist to pouring rain and they have always worked perfectly. They are also great for following deer blood trails at night. I don't know why anyone would ever use a hand held flashlight anymore. headlamps are so dramatically superior. 5Best lamps on the market with the best customer service on the planet. i have owned the apex for about 20 years... and finally it gave up the ghost (rodents ate it). I tried to fix it... jerri rigged it for a few years... and then finally bought another for its replacement. I have used these in the lowland wet rainforests over about 2 years of accumulative time. I have also used these in upland rainforests, cloud forests, and spelunking in wet and dry caves. I use it at home for nightly hikes in the rain or snow or whatever. it is wonderfully balanced, very comfortable and gives out a massive huge beam. Altogether, there are four types of light (high and low beam) of a spot light and side wide beam and then flashing modes. The apex holds a charge for a long time... and, as i mentioned, its high beam is like a car's headlight! I was able to blast huge light way up into rainforest trees to see eye shine blazing from 80 feet above. with binoc, i could id the animals at that distance with ease. Add to that, Princeton Tec has the best customer service on the planet (e.g., they are replacing my rat chewed lamp after 20 years of use without question... with their great pleasure!!) and i can't imagine why i will ever buy a lamp from another maker.I have the Vizz, the older Surge (scuba light), the 4mode (1m H2O) and the apex (soon to be two of them). All brilliant in their design (each distinct) and functional over decades of continuous use with stellar customer service that repairs or replaces gleefully any broken lamp anytime... for any reason. Wow... what a company. Wow... what great lamps. 5Good lamp Overall it is a very nice light. I had no failures with the pivot point, it held firm. Very bright, very comfortable. My only issue is that mine failed when I dropped it 36" on to a wood floor. So how sturdy SHOULD a product like this be, and at what price point? The manufacturer can expect to see it used in very benign conditions like fixing plumbing, but can also expect some survival/ outdoor type use as well. I would like a headlamp that is sturdy enough to survive a drop from waist height, it is a very real world possibility that some one will drop their headlamp at some point. If you are in a wilderness/ camping/ marine/ or other risky situation you want something you can depend on to take some knocks. Of course in these scenarios you should also have a back-up. How much would I pay for a drop-tested, super durable headlamp? Probably between $100 to $200. For around the house, non-survival type use I would use a much cheaper light of course. So for around $80. should this light be more durable? Maybe. They do offer a good warranty so I will see if they will replace this.Update: They sent a replacement no charge. Can't beat that, I'm a Princeton Tec fan for life. 3THIS is a headlight! This is my second Apex 275 - the first lasted me eight tough years of everything from automotive/motorcycle maintenance/repairs, to professional field work around the country. I've seen thousands of cheapo headlights and always laugh at them: "that's not a headlight...THIS is a headlight! No joke, this is a proper headlight that drowns all others out. 5Bright headlamp, however eats batteries! Wiring to battery ... Bright headlamp, however eats batteries ! Wiring to battery pack failed twice! Tired of working on my $75.00 headlamp.... bought the cheapest, brightest one I could find, and it s rechargeable... for twenty bucks . This headlamp is incredible... stays bright all day long ! I only recharge it once a week! And I use it everyday!!! By the way... had another headlamp from this company... $50.00 model. Contacted them, explained my issues, they gave me a work order approval number, had me send it in.... guess what!!! It s been Three Years. No contact, no headlamp, They don t even answer there customer service line anymore! You decide!!! 1
