Works as it is. I need to check our outdoor outlet and it was perfect tool for me. I checked it with live outlet to first and it worked. I used to check the outdoor outlet and found it was dead. I got new outlet and replaced it. I am planning to add more indoor outlets and hope this make my work easier. 5Easy to read and very helpful and identifying problematic outlets I was having a persistent problem with an outlet in my home. The receptacle tester helped me check each outlet to identify any possible issues. Once I was able to rule out a short in the outlet I could start looking at the possibility that it might be the main breaker. An invaluable tool when needing to check for shorts and wiring issues in outlets. 5Works great to check faulty wiring. I was replacing an old ungrounded two prong receptacle in my apartment that went to my fridge, I kept the wires in the same orientation and checked with a multi-meter to check hot to ground, it turns out the hot and neutral were reversed and I had to power off the circuit again to redo the wiring. I always wanted to get one of these devices, small, affordable, and saves time. I wouldn't have had to redo the wiring if I had this device. As soon as I got the tester I went back to that outlet and confirmed everything was correct then ran across my apartment and checked all the outlets making sure they were all good. A few had the same problem, reverse hot and neutral, a few ungrounded, but most were fine and grounded. It helps to have a short extension cable while using this in tight spots where you can't plug the device straight in and be able to see the three leds. 5Helped me know how bad my apt really is Since I was pretty much expecting the worst as problems continued to reveal themselves in my first week in a new apartment, I bought this to test whether the weirdly-placed outlets were at least wired correctly. Some were, some weren't, but at least now I know and it's another thing to add to the list of needed repairs I'm sending to my (unresponsive) landlord. 5It does exactly what I expected it to do I already knew I had some electrical issues to deal with at home, and with this tool, it makes it really easy to determine what is wrong, and how to fix it.My primary problem is that the idiot who I bought this house from, when he finished the basement himself, he cut off almost all the ground wires from the receptacles. I had no clue until I bought a battery backup system for my computers, and the sucker would not work because it detected no ground. I then brought in an electrician who fixed the problems in my "man cave", and added a brand new dedicated circuit in addition, as well as put in my coax for my internet connection. He also fixed the bathroom outlet as that was the most dangerous not to be grounded. But, I wanted to do the rest of the outlets, and as I bought all new plugs with built in ground fault detection, I am doing two birds with one stone.With this device, I can not only detect the problem circuits, but when I switch them off at the box, I can make sure I turned off the one I need to work on.Oh, I got one surprise when I checked all the upstairs wiring... one had the hot and neutral flipped. Nice to be able to find such issues easily. 5Works great and I live in an old house with alot ... Works great and I live in an old house with alot of wiring problems and this has helped me in so many ways... Alot of the receptacles I have arent grounded and are the old two prong receptacles which I'm trying to swap out for three prong. And as long as the old metal box and the BX itself is grounded i can ground the new 3 prong receptacles and this lets me know if its truly grounded. Cheap and very useful. 5Protect your valuable electronics and yourself. Excellent resource for EARTHING Plug into an outlet to see if it s properly grounded. The different sequence of lights indicate what s going on. If the 2nd and 3rd are lit, you are properly grounded. Simple! Also, if you are into EARTHING, plugging your gadgets into a non-grounded outlet is futile. Product is solid, well made, brightly colored and easy to find in your mess of tools. 5This is what the electrician used. Had an electrician come out to fix a T8 fluorescent ballast I had never done before and watched how he did it so I can now replace one myself. But he was testing a breaker that we often tripped when the microwave and the George Foreman grill were going and he used a tester at the outlets and fund one that was installed incorrectly in 1982. In fact he has never seen that type of particular outlet when it came time to replacing it. If you remember the old push the wire in quick and go type outlets you know what I am talking about. I laughed as I watched this young'un finally figure out how to remove it. Anyway I decided to test the rest of the house because he would test each and every outlet but for 10 times what this tester costs. Found another original outlet installed incorrectly in 1982 and it is fixed. The only thing I wish this one had was a GFCI button to test those. It is also good to know you got the right breaker off. 5A must have for any DIY'er This thing is great! I've been replacing a lot of our GFCI outlet plates in my home as of late as they're a bit outdated and some of them are loose or no longer even worked half the time. This thing will tell you based on the color coded lights whether or not the job was done correctly, or if the outlet has power (which is important if you don't want to get zapped).One thing to note is that the reverse hot/ground error light is a bit misleading. I received this error code after hooking up an outlet in the kitchen and was a bit purplexed. After surfing the internet other people has posted similar issues and it was discovered that this meant is was an open neutral instead. If you receive either of those error codes you should turn off the power to the outlet and check the connections. In my case when I stuck the socket back into the wall, the ground connection was a bit loose and after I tightened the screw the light went away. 5Handy, necessary tool! For less than $8, it's a good idea for every DIY'er to throw one of these in your toolbox. Light, durable, and easy to read the lights with the corresponding labels. My scenario: A strand of outlets stopped working. I plugged this in and only the far, right light illuminated. The sticker chart told me I had an open neutral. I traced the power to a junction box and sure enough, found loose wire nut that allowed a neutral to slip out! Helped save time as I knew exactly what I was looking for to correct the problem.I also recently added a new outlet in my shop piggybacking off another outlet. Plugged this tester in and it showed me that all of my connections were correct! Great little tool! 5
