Customer Reviews

Perfect drill for home and DIY use.Perfect drill. Heavy duty but relatively light weight. 3 lb 3.5 oz drill only weight. Power cord 7 ft 3 inches. Chuck jaws close very tightly, not even a 1 mm gap. Jaws and circular chuck casing are metal and look very sturdy. Was able to test with a 1/8" pilot hole drill bit, and got a solid clamp. This drill has a higher rotation speed and power relative to an average consumer drill. Looking forward to using this for wood working DIY projects, as well as home repair and hanging heavy pictures/mirrors. I am replacing a $200 Coleman cordless drill with 2 batteries. That one is bulky and weight 3.75 lbs. It was difficult to control it with one hand, and the balance seemed wrong. I hated that drill. Every time I go to use it, the battery is dead, and it takes long time to charge. Compared to other light-weight corded drills, I think it's a reasonable trade-off of slightly more weight and bulk for an all-metal chuck jaw/clamp and metal ball bearings. Blows out a lot of air from its sides when in use. Wood working will probably require eye protection from flying wood dust. I got an eye infection one time from using a slower drill with just my glasses and no goggles while drilling a small drywall hole. It was very rare, but a small particle flew in from above my glasses into an eye. I bet this one will be more prone to flying small particles.due to its higher speed. The lock-on only works on full-speed, although I did get it to engage early on at a slow-speed. Don't know why it worked once. Couldn't duplicate it. Anyway, I think you will be happy with this drill for a life time of use as a home owner and DIY user. If you are a construction worker doing framing type of jobs, you may want something more heavy duty. 5Fantastic Heavy-Duty power drillThis drill is seriously heavy-duty commercial grade. The housing is cast metal so this drill is pretty heavy and it has so much more power than the average cord-less drills. The power cord is 6 feet long which is perfect length for most indoor jobs. The variable speed is controlled by how gently you pull the trigger. The weird contraption on top is to hook the drill onto your belt. I like that it is a big two finger trigger to reduce fatigue and the trigger is very fluid and predictable, not notchey at all. Another BIG plus is that it is a keyless chuck which means you do NOT have to use the hand tool to change drill bits each time! I did not even consider this in my research but it is so much more convenient to change drill bits without using that tool. The drill clamp extends open to hold even the largest drill bits, I tested the drill bit size by putting a standard pencil in the drill hole & I have not seen a drill bit thicker than a pencil. Another great feature is the button to change the rotation direction of the drill is right there in front of the trigger unlike some drills where the switch is on the housing or the handle. This drill is louder than less powerful cordless drills but the noise is not unusually loud or annoying. It puts out a lot of air out of the side vent slot's, almost as much as a fan so I guess it will dry out your hands during the summer time. This is manufactured in China at their Porter-Cable facility so it is not a generic power drill that has the label slapped on it. I cannot think of one thing that can be improved on this drill, it is really well engineered. Like the other reviewer stated, this is a steal at this price. This is a $100.00 drill. Now I cannot attest to it's longevity as I have not tested it for any length of time but it does come with a 3 year warranty which is much better than the standard 1 year warranty you receive with most products. Porter-Cable is my power tool brand from now on. 5Solid drill -- particularly for larger consumer-duty assembly projectsThese days with so many mergers and takeovers of power tool brands, it's hard to keep track of which traditionally reliable brands are still delivering solid quality. This Porter Cable drill seems to measure up to their reputation, certainly so for heavy consumer-duty use around the house. It does have a plastic casing, but it's really solid, no give or play. I'm not thrilled about the plastic near the chuck but can live with that. Other reviewers have noted the noise level -- to me the sound is pretty consistent with gearing down the electric motor RPMs, so reasonable. Zero wobble at the business end, at least with the one that I got, so drilling should run true. Also, found the trigger switch to be just fine -- it is a short squeeze, but most importantly, it's very predictable so doesn't feel to me like a 'hair trigger'.A great application for this drill is as a corded drill and light driver for bigger assembly projects around the house like putting together furniture or putting up shelving. Plenty of torque, light enough weight, and no battery life limits. Also seems pretty well ventilated for longer continuous operation with sanding disks, wire brush wheels, etc., but haven't had a chance to test that yet.Wish it came with a fitted Porter-Cable factory hardcase... but I found a solution by springing for an extra ten bucks to get a small, rugged, hard-bottom/soft-sided Porter-Cable tool bag. A bit larger than need be for just the drill, but that leaves room for some bit-sets and drill attachments. So its useful as complete drill 'kit bag', plus you never have mess around with precisely coiling up and fitting the power cord into its designated place within a hardcase.Factory calls it the "Porter Cable Soft Sided Power Tool Bag" (OEM Replacement Part #A11901). Note that the 1 inch in the 21"x13"x1" product dimensions, refers to bag when folded down. I've only ever had a very old, cordless drill before that died after about 2 hours and needed to charge for 4 hours before use again. I do a lot of projects that require a drill, so it's so nice to have one that plugs in and is ready to go without any charging, and can go for hours. It's got a very easy switch for forward and reverse, so it's easy to switch with one finger if needed. The cord is plenty long for many things, but for bigger projects where I'm moving around a lot I've got a medium duty extension chord. The weight is nice - not too heavy - and the thing runs so smoothly and quietly. It took me a little while to get used to the switch being where it was, as sometimes I would run it without meaning too, but that was an easy adjustment after some practice. It doesn't have a level, which might be nice to have, but you can't beat the price and quality. The majority of my power tools are Porter-Cable and I have not yet been disappointed. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a corded power drill. 5Just ok.I've owned a few drills over the years. I like the chuck on this drill, it tightens easily and the bits are dead center. Its also not bad weight-wise. What I don't like, and it might just be the luck of the draw, is that the fwd/rvs switch is a bit loose. I often hold the drill sideways and the switch slides by gravity just enough that it stops me from pulling the trigger. So I have to either stop and force the switch over, try to nudge it with my middle finger, or otherwise contort my body. Once the trigger is free to move, the drill works great; it doesn't have best variable speed control I've experienced in other drills that help in driving vs drilling, but I've done both with it ok. Overall, an "I like it" product, but not one I'll sing songs about around the campfire. 3Solid drill and all the features I need BUT very noisy! This is about the only drill that does everything I need it to and doesn't cost a small fortune. 1. Not battery powered, those are worthless for drilling metal. 2. Drills metal very well because of: 3. VSR with a hair trigger. Believe it or not many of us actually WANT a hair trigger because drilling metal without destroying bits means drilling as close as possible to drill press speeds (SLOW) with very hard pressure and lots of cutting oil. For some reason it's trivial to put very hard pressure on this with one hand while keeping the speed constant and the drill rock steady, while lubricating with the other. Once you get going the speed is very precisely controlled so the sensitive trigger actually helps. 4. Reverse to back out bits that like to embed themselves in metal when they punch through. I can't see how anyone can get along without reverse if they are drilling anything harder than softwoods. Even oak can grab a bit so hard you're forced to take it off and wrench it out if you can't back it out. 5. When you're grinding or sanding with an attachment you NEED reverse AND a locking trigger, or the bit can fly off if you're forced to grind in the same direction of rotation as the drill. Because it has a trigger lock I can stick this sucker in a bench vise and grind/sand/brush small parts just like my old Rigid that failed after many years of abuse (a very solid drill that it looks like they dropped, probably because it was so useful, or I would have bought another). BUT it sounds like the space shuttle taking off, probably at a similar decibel level. I have to wear my muffs while grinding, unlike any other drill I have owned. So I knocked one star off for that. Only time will tell if it holds up, I'll edit this if it starts acting up.Now if there was only a drill that did all this and could be locked at any speed...I'll keep dreaming...PS if your drill smokes send it back, it's defective. Either that or you should think about getting a sharper auger, dull ones burn wood. 4Great corded drill!I just moved into a new home and my builder wanted to charge $800 to install an air switch for the garbage disposal and a soap dispenser in the Silestone counter. That was just crazy. I watched a couple of videos about drilling quartz(Silestone), granite, marble, etc., and decided to do it myself. The air switch was $20, the soap dispenser was $18, the drill was $37, a diamond tip 1.25inch circular hole saw, and $3 of plumbers puddy. All I had was a battery powered drill that is great for most things, but I felt it did not have the power needed for this job. Picked his drill up because I liked that it was 6.5A and that translates into LOTS of power! The Silestone is about 1.25inches thick and it took about 5-10 minutes per hole. Not constant drilling, but quartz is tough. The drill was awesome. Never got hot, LOVE the easy to adjust drill speed trigger. After the second hole this drill was ready for more. Anyway, I don't need this power on a daily basis, but for the price its great to have in the garage for those 2-3 times a year I need it. Highly recommended! 5AMAZING DRILLThis drill is amazing for the price of $40. I received the drill today and plugged it in and going from a battery powered 20v drill to this you can tell has so much more power and speed. More than I need for what I bought it for which is detailing cars. I ll be using it for shampooing car seats and upholstery using the drill brush attachment. I ve been using a battery powered which already yields amazing results the only problem I had was it runs out of Battery quickly especially when applying pressure for stains. Right out of the box this drill is not cheaply made at all it s pretty heavy duty construction comparable to a dewalt drill which will run you around $80. Don t let the cheap price fool ya it s more than enough for what I need but even if you need it for simple picture hanging it ll take you around 10 seconds and done. 5very strong drill but... BROKEN IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHSThis electric drill is very strong. It seems to drill thru anything with proper drill bits. The only issue is the chuck could be lose at anytime, especially in the middle of drilling. When it happens, it is quite natural for me to hold on the drill bit (in order to put it back). BAD THING: the drill bit is so HOT that it burns my fingers. I learned and will never do it again. I got it only a few days so far, I will test this drill more thoroughly to see the the chuck hold tight if I tighten it before any drill.I did another dozen drill with large size drill bits thru 3/4" hard wood. It did that with ease. The bits are held tight as long as I tighten the chuck when putting in a new drill bit. Upgrade to 4 stars. Lot more drilling coming......Forgot to mention, when I first got it, the chuck is so tight, I could not loosen it to insert drill bit. Tried so many times and I was almost to the point I want to ship it back and magic, the chuck now turns easily !!!Problem is I do not know what I did to make this works. This seems to be an issue many buyers running into.I had a chance to insert a small grinding wheel to this drill. Use it to shape marble and it works solidly for around 45 mins without the grinding wheel getting lose. Also use large drill bits to drill holes thru 4" thick wood. Did that with easy. VERY STRONG DRILL.UPDATE: Now the chuck stuck, no way I can get it to open or close. I hope the manufacturer honor their 1-yr warranty period.I bought a set of cordless drill (standard size) & light for 20$ at least a dozen years ago from Harbor Freight and they still work after years of intensive usage. I am so disappointed that this powerful drill brokes to fast. I wish I can give 0 star. 5The ONE You Need To Buy - FWD, REV, Balanced, Solid !This is your basic drill... forward, reverse, variable speed. It is all you need and yet will do just about everything. I have a pretty extensive home shop - more so than many pro shops in that something always needs to be fixed on the ranch. I have about 10 different drills of various size and power... but this is the GO TO drill and the one you want. It runs strong, doesn't get too hot and has a sold weight along with excellent balance. Girls, if you want to get a gift for your guy this season... this will work just fine ! :) 5
