Customer Reviews

Better than most, but still not perfect Things I like:Two of the main reasons I chose this headlamp over others are size and weight. Sure there are brighter headlamps out there, but I'm personally not interested in a giant box on my forehead, or one that requires a separate battery pack or wires hanging off it, or a big knobby switch ... or a third strap over my head.. just no. Even most of Black Diamond's self-contained offerings were too large and bulky for my taste. I wanted small, streamlined, and high output with a red light mode to preserve night vision. And that's exactly what the new TacTikka+ offers. It's small and sleek, doesn't feel bulky or cheap at all, and weighs in at 3.0oz *with* batteries on my scale. It's also comfortable - you can literally forget it's on. The battery compartment is easy to open (finally!) and actually stays open while changing batteries (unlike the old Tikkas that took an unusual amount of force to muscle apart and would keep flopping closed on you). The clasp on the headband is an added bonus (though I don't see myself needing it) and the 5-position swivel is easy to tilt with one hand. The red LED is more "red" than the filter on my old lamp; as far as I can observe the LED is more effective at preserving my night vision than the filter, but that could be because the filter in my old lamp appears faded. Either way, LED's can't fade and there's less moving parts. It's also water resistant (but not sealed - more on that later). The strobe modes clock in at about 110 bpm, well suited for being seen while jogging or biking while maximizing battery life (100 hours!). Most importantly though, the output on this lamp, especially for its size and weight, is outstanding! Output levels below:Operation and output:There are 8 modes of operation (2 red modes and 6 white). Long-pressing the power button for 1 second turns the lamp on *to the lowest power setting in the color you used last*. Short-Press to cycle up through the brightness/strobe settings and long-press to turn it back off. Change colors by turning the light off then long-pressing the power button for *2* seconds (it will cycle through the last color used for 1 second then to switch to the other). To access the "boost" mode, double-tap the power button while in white mode - it will jump to 140 lumens then return to the previous brightness after 10 seconds or a short-press. Lastly, if you short-press the button while the light is off, the red LED strobes once. Not sure what this feature is supposed to be for. Signalling maybe? or maybe a battery test? It's not mentioned in the instructions anywhere.Anyway, here are the modes available:Red mode cycle:- Red - 100 hours (5 lumens / 5m)- Red strobe - 400 hours (visible up to 400m away)White mode cycle:- White dim - 100 hours (5 lumens / Illuminates up to 10m)- White low - 12 hours (30 lumens / Illuminates up to 25m)- White medium - 6 hours (45 lumens / Illuminates up to 30m)- White high - 2 hours (110 lumens / Illuminates up to 50m)- White strobe - 200 hours (visible up to 2000m away!)+ Boost mode - 140 lumens for up to 10 seconds / Illuminates up to 60m [double tap in white mode to activate](Note: These run-times are direct from the packaging materials and not confirmed by me. The packaging also states that alkaline batteries run half as long as Nimh and Lithium batteries in this headlamp, so don't expect these times with the included alkaline batteries ;)Things I would change:- Personally I would have preferred the light to always start in red to guarantee preservation of night vision. Most "tactical" lights work this way, like the Princeton Tec Remix Pro Tactical Headlamp - TAN w/ TAN Strap & Red Lens. It's entirely possible to forget what mode the light was last used in and you just want to go straight to red without having to check or blind anyone. And even if you *know* it was last used in white mode, you cannot get to red without first cycling through 1 full second of white.- I also don't like that the lamp cannot be removed from the headband. The aforementioned Princeton Tec Remix Pro Tactical Headlamp - TAN w/ TAN Strap & Red Lens has slits in the frame which allow the headlamp to be removed and installed onto any 1" webbing / PALS / MOLLE. Lacking this ability reduces the versatility of this light, though if I really wanted I suppose I could saw the slits in the frame myself.- The red mode needs brightness setting. As it stands, it's either on or off (or strobe). The Princeton Tec Remix Pro Tactical Headlamp - TAN w/ TAN Strap & Red Lens has two red levels, one dimmer than this and one slightly brighter. I find Both of them more useful than this one middle-of-the-road brightness.- "Water resistant" isn't the kind of water resistance you're used to. You won't find any seals or o-rings around the battery compartment; the packaging states "IP X4 Water Resistant" which I found out means "Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect." Don't confuse this with a sealed body. While the internal electronic components may suffer no harmful effect, the battery compartment will flood easily. The instructions state "If used in a damp environment, remove the batteries from the lamp and allow it to dry with the battery case open. In case of contact with seawater, rinse the lamp in fresh water and dry it."- This is just a stupid gripe ... the color is supposed to be desert but the writing on the band and the entire battery compartment are OD green, not grey like the picture would make you think. Don't trust the picture for color matching. 4Excellent Product I've been using Petzl head torches for some time now and usually when I find something that works I stick with it. I've just upgraded to this product, however, because it's markedly superior to the Petzl I was formerly using. The beam on this unit has a much better spread than my old unit, and although the Amazon listing states 110 lumens the box in which it arrives states 140 lumens and I believe this is actually closer to reality. So when using the white light brightest setting you get a good spread of beam around your working area, whether that's something you're doing with your hands or the trail in front of you.My preference for after-dark outdoors hiking or trail running is to use the red light setting because it provides a little more visibility than ambient moonlight but doesn't impede night vision, so you can see beyond the beam area - unlike if you use the white beam, because then your night vision will be compromised.Additionally, as other reviewers have noted, this is a light and easily-worn unit that doesn't create any hassle factor. Battery replacement is quick and relatively easy (though you'll want to practice eyes-closed for those times you'll be doing it in darkness) and battery life is adequate for what it is. The other nice feature is that if you need more peripheral light it's easy to slide a second unit onto the headband so you can have them side-by-side for greater all-round illumination and a decent amount of overlap in your main working area that of course increases total brightness. 5They don't make them like they used to... This is not the same headlamp of its namesake. The old Tactikka was indestructable. Mine survived years of abuse in a foreign S-hole and the best training events my job w at it. This new version is junk. Within a week of use on the flightline, mine had already developed a crack across the entire front case, exposing the battery compartment to the elements. Given that it rode in my helmet bag and the most abuse it could have taken was a 4 lb HGU-56P landing on it as I set my bag down by the aircraft, I can say this light is more flimsy than the $9 Energizer lights at the checkout counter at Home Depot. Avoid wasting your money on this and buy the new Black Diamond Spot series. 1I'd love to buy another light like my old XP2 My old Petzl XP2 survived three years of hard use in Afghanistan before I passed it on to a young soldier. As soon as I took this "tactical" light out of the box I had serious doubts it could survive a hearty walk around the backyard. It's made from thin, cheap plastics and doesn't recall which light setting it's on (you have you double click the button to get any useable brightness). Within 5 minutes it was back in the box and on it's way to Amazon. Hey Petzl, if you ever decide to make quality lights again, contact me through here. I'd love to buy another light like my old XP2. 1Shines on my glasses is a problem This is actually a very bright headlight with a practical beam pattern that somehow is better than 2014 Tikka XP that I also have. I like it a lot but there is one thing annoying me so I give it only 4 starts: In the pitch dark environment it shines on my glasses no matter how I adjust it. I do not have the same problem with 2014 Tikka XP. For close range applications it is ok, but that is quite annoying for trail finding use. 4A quality, well-built, well-thought out headlamp - worth your consideration. Nice headlight. We have some older Petzl Tikkas, and this is mostly better than those. The older ones held the batteries in tightly when you closed the backing door, but the batteries tended to pop out of place while you were doing that. On this model, the problem is a bit different. The batteries stay in on their own, and the door is now lighter and seems to be a little less sturdy than before. But, OTOH, the only reason the door was so beefy before was that it was the only thing holding the batteries in place. I think this is an improvement - the batteries load easily and everything opens and closes much more easily than before. The light is excellent. This has four different white light modes and one red light mode. The lowest white light mode is intended to be dim enough to shine it in people's faces and not blind them. It's perfect for that. The medium light mode is supposed to be enough for you to walk in the dark. It does a terrific job of having a bright narrow area in the center and a dimmer but definitely usable side lighting (it's a sophisticated lens that you can't easily see from their pictures). The 'high' light mode is supposed to let you do things like run in the dark. Still need to try that one for that purpose, but it is quite bright. Finally, there's a "burst" mode from the highest light level, that will make things even brighter for ten seconds. That does indeed make it even brighter, but it's not a huge difference. Need to try that outside in the dark to see if it changes things. The only thing I'm not sure I like about this at this point is that you *really* need the manual to use the different light modes. There are three different types of button push this thing understands. (There's only one button, and it seems very waterproofed, with a high quality rubber cover.) If you push it quickly, you cycle through the regular white light modes, but not the burst mode. To get that brightest amount of light, you need to double-push the button quickly. And how do you switch between white and red light? (BTW, only one level of red light.) For that, you need to push the button and hold it down till it switches to red. Same thing to switch back to white. I think with frequent use it will become intuitive, but when you first get it, it's a little confusing.I bought this with my own money for my wife, as we have a small farm and end up working in the dark a lot this time of year. She needs the better light for harvesting in the dark. We get pretty dirty and wet working at the farm in the dark, so I'll update later on durability. So far the light is excellent quality, and seems to be built to take a beating, unlike a lot of the Chinese models out there. 5A very good combination tactical, non-tactical headlamp Rather than having a red flip-down filter, the Petzl Tactikka has a white and a red LED. Therefore the switchology is different than on previous units, but it's still easy to use once you get the hang of it. To turn on, press and hold switch. The light starts in dim mode. Click the switch to cycle through the brightness settings and flashing mode. Press and hold to turn off. To go from white to red, start with the unit OFF. Press and hold the switch until the light comes on and continue to hold until it changes colors. To get back to the original color, turn the light off. Press and hold the switch until it changes colors again. The quality is very good, the light in its dimmest setting is great for reading, and of course a headlamps leaves both hands free: much more user-friendly than a flashlight. If you need a red light for whatever reason, this is very good. 5I surf cast on the East Coast and thought this would be a great headlamp and was excited about the red only function ... Don't buy this if you even plan on going near salt water. I surf cast on the East Coast and thought this would be a great headlamp and was excited about the red only function to help preserve my night vision. The white LED light was amazing, the red light was perfect for night fishing and illuminated a good swath of my field of view without broadcasting light everywhere I didn't want it.My real gripe is that after 3-4 trips out (not even wet suiting yet, strictly wading along shoreline) the batteries corroded inside the housing and now the thing is totally useless. I got sprayed/misted a few times but I never submerged or dunked the head lamp. My friends who rock climb/ski recommended Petzl to me and I can appreciate the functionality and lightweight aspects of the headlamp, but I'm seriously disappointed that the housing isn't even moderately weather resistant. 2not as sturdy as they used to be Good headlamp, it seems more cheaply made than my last Petzl Tikka headlamp that I bought 7 years ago. 4Not a good product for a waterfowler I agree with everything reviewer John LaRue said above. My son and husband have older Petzl Model E86's and they are still performing 100% after 4 years of very hard waterfowl hunting use. My husband though he lost his (since recovered) so we ordered the Taktikka+. What a disappointing difference. As Mr. LaRue indicates, the quality really took a step back on this model. No O-ring seal, very thin housing and a very non-intuitive switch system. The switch is supposed to be operable with gloves but that is not accurate. You need to push in a concentrated area in the large rubber switch cover which is very difficult with gloves on. The waterproof rating seems overly optimistic too with a hard plastic to plastic mating surface that appears weak. The instructions advise to open cover and let everything dry out after use in wet conditions. Not a good product for a waterfowler. 2
