Customer Reviews

nice WP lampholder Decent outdoor head. Nice thread depth which allows for a gasket and locknut and good angle adjustment. It helps to put a little silicon grease on the o-ring. I discovered that the cover is easy to get off if you just pull out and down (kind of like breaking open a shotgun), instead of twisting and pulling straight out. Either a par20 or R20 fit fine. Like all sealed fixtures of this type the bulb is hard to grasp with the fingers to twist in or out. I like to get some blue painter's tape or duct tape and make a " T" shape out of it with the tape stuck to itself forming the vertical part and the top of the "T" being the sticky side of the tape which I stick to the face of the bulb. Makes it real easy! It is a sealed unit, so LED bulbs don't have the longest lifespan in it. I need to use halogens, so it works great. 5Some units have ultra tight difficult to remove covers I bought 4 of these units. 3 of the 4 units function well overall. 1 of the 4 has a similar problem that others have experienced - the cover is difficult to remove. After great effort, I was finally able to remove it, after having tried rubber strap wrenches, screwdrivers, and rubber gloves. When reattaching it, I put a generous coating of silicone lubricant in hopes that it would come off more easily if I had to ever open it again. However, when I wanted to change the light bulb for a brighter one, I was unable to remove the cover despite my efforts using the same tools I used the first time. I think there is a bad batch with difficult to remove covers. 3Short circuit Like another reviewer, I had significant problems with short circuits in the internal wiring of these lights. The design is very poor and dangerous in that the mounting screw which holds the bulb socket in the fixture is directly above the black (hot) wire terminal and the screw is too long. This caused a nice puff of smoke and a tripped breaker following installation. The screw could not be more than 1/16 away from the terminal in a best case scenario. 1Amazing Value These lights are an amazing value. I don't know how they can sell them for this price. They are heavy gauge metal. They accommodate a standard LED bulb so you may not have to change bulbs for years. They are very waterproof with double rubber O rings (use petroleum jelly for further seal assurance). If you are placing them in the ground it would be best to buy a chamber kit, to go below grade, to keep the junctions high and dry.You may have to spray joint with WD40 to open the light bulb chamber the 1st time. They may be listed as bronze but they read as black. Be sure to check the dimensions of the light. I assumed they would be small and unobtrusive because of the price but they are large which is fine with me. 5Faulty Design & Break Easily at Neck Every time we need to switch out the bulbs, the top is very difficult to twist or pull off. Then, the slightest bit of force put on the neck when trying to get the top off causes the neck to break. We have a newly built home that, unfortunately, uses these lights. We will eventually see if we can just replace them all with a differently designed light. But for now, we just ordered 2 more since the one we just replaced 8 months ago has already broken in the same exact place (neck)... and we want to keep an extra one on hand since we expect it to break again at some point. We do not recommend this design at all if you have other options. 1I really like the look of the lights and they are fairly ... I have purchased several of these lights through the years. I have been using these lights for about 5 years. I will tell you that after about 3 years of use they tend to crack and break at the seam of where you screw the fixture in. I really like the look of the lights and they are fairly inexpensive for what you get. Overall, I am happy with the lights. I have not been able to find anything I like better. I just replace them every few years when they break. 4 stars because I like them, but they are not as durable as I would prefer. They will only last a couple of years in the hot Texas sun, but for the price I can replace them every few years. I will continue to purchase these lights. 4Buy these fixtures and you'll be sorry You get what you pay for. Looks good but here are the real issues. Base breaks off extremely easily. Bought 12 fixtures and half of the bases have broken off while applying the slightest pressure to adjust the angle of the fixtures. The lamps are impossible to replace as you can not get a grip on the lamp to unscrew. Nine (9) of the fixtures have leaked and filled with water. The bulbs were rusted in place and the light fixtures permanently damaged. The water eventually made it into the junction box and down the conduit. A lot of work to remove the damaged fixtures and vacuum out the water from the boxes and conduit. The covers are extremely difficult to remove and once you do they will never again fit tightly. This is what I got for trying to save some money by buying these fixtures. After a year I've had to replace them all. So I wasted the money for the 12 fixtures and 12 LED bulbs that are damaged due to water entering the fixtures. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. 2I really like these lights. Update to include solution to easily remove the shroud (cowl). I really like these lights. The shroud is difficult to get off as previous comments indicate. After damaging several of these units, I finally found a solution to removing / separating the cowl (lens portion) without damaging the base (bulb portion). The short answer is two 6" strap wrenches, one on the cowl and one on the base. Here's some tips that I discovered: 1. Before the first time you push the cowl into the bases, wearing a latex or silicone glove, spread a generous bead of silicone "O-Ring" lubricant around the two o-rings on the cowl. This will make it easier to insert the cowl, and make it easier to separate them when the bulb burns out. When you insert the cowl into the base, excess grease will come out. Wipe it off with a rag, but be aware that more will seep out over time and you will end up with a strip around the crease between the two pieces. It s worth having the stripe. 2. To remove the cowl from the base, a) position the first strap wrench oriented so you're pulling backwards towards you to engage the wrench, but don t pull it yet. (I use Par 38 housings so 4" won't fit. 4" might be good for par 30 or par 20). b) Position the strap just behind crease. c) Position the other strap wrench oriented so you re pushing away from your body to engage the wrench. Put it as close to the crease between the cowl and base as possible without covering it. Now, each strap wrench should be on either side of the crease. d) If you have a helper, have him steady the base as you move to the next step. e) Push the handle of the wrench forward away from your body and use the same amount of force to pull the wrench on the base towards your body. Using equal amounts of pressure at the same time will stop the lamp from moving and cracking the mounting rod. f) Once you get the cowl to let go of the base, keep pushing but start to add some outward angle to slowly pull the cowl from the base as you re turning. Continue to apply equal pressure to the base handle that you re pulling. The o-ring grease should be helping you push to turn and angle away from the base. g) place the cowl with the lens down on a clean flat surface, so dirt doesn t get on the o-rings. h) Change the bulb. i) wearing a silicone or latex glove, put another generous bead of o-ring grease all the way around the o-rings. Repeat the above as necessary. It s worth going through this because I ve never found a better waterproof Par 38 lamp holder. 5Excellent replacement for home flood light So far so good. Looking to see if it hold up to a few rains and is actually waterproof.I needed this for a vertical installation off the side of my house as a home floodlight (against the side of the house). Couldn t find one anywhere at the big box stores and finally found this one. Cheap price and quality seems to be decent. It does not come with any attaching equipment but that s what I needed since I already had a plate from the old light. It matched right up and screwed in perfectly. It does not come with a bulb. But that s understandable for the price. The front just pulls off to install the bulb. It is a great seal and appears to be very tight.Paint and finish are good and the adjustment screw is tight and solid. 5Nice inexpensive light You only get what is pictured. You will need to pick up a box and top cap, a rocket post or a gard-n-post (my favorite). I knew this from other reviews and still a good buy for under $20. Dark bonze is accurate to the true color. Seams like a good seal on the weather proof lens, which slides on and off easily but seals nicely. A bit tough for big hands to change bulbs as the narrow bulb recedes down in a bit. If you take your time to get bulb lined up just right it will thread in pretty easy, I would not suggest over tightening, as it may be hard to unthread. The Sylvania bulbs I picked up (14502 50 watt par 20 narrow flood 30 degree and a 14500 50 watt par 20 10 degree) have ridges around the outer edge which proves to be a huge plus with this fixture. Overall I like it and is very low profile. I mounted it about 4 feet in front and at ground level to illuminate a fountain and it works great and is barely noticeable compared to some models I looked at. With the 30 degree bulb lights up the 27" wide and 36" tall fountain very well and a little spills left and right on the rock garden. Has stainless screws to lock in vertical adjustment and on the rear to hold in the socket, which is replaceable, like that. Overall a good buy. 4
