Customer Reviews

Poor Customer ServiceA product is only as good as its customer service. I have never experienced anything like this in my life: I have the modem for 5 months. I've been having internet connection issues for months. This takes time to diagnose and many, many calls to my internet provider and two visits to my home by technicians. They finally conclude my netgear modem is bad. This is confirmed when I borrow a modem from my internet provider and my service miraculously works perfect now. So I contact netgear and they tell me that there is free customer support for only the first 90 days though the modem has a 1 year hardware warranty. They say they can run a diagnose on the modem (but with a caveat): if it is bad they will send me a replacement for free; if they work with it and actually get it to work right I will be responsible for updating my customer support which will cost $89.99. Who is going to take that gamble? One agent told me I can diagnose the modem for free by going to the netgear website. He said he would send an email to guide me where to go. No email ever came. I called back and the agent said there was no record of the agent saying he would send an email. This time I found out I could get them to diagnose the modem for $49.99. I told them I'm not doing it. I asked to speak to a supervisor (which I had done on an earlier call and no one was available) and I said that if I am not able to talk to a supervisor that fact will be included in my consumer complaint to my state's attorney general. After 5 minutes the agent came back and said they would be sending me a new unit. If this is the kind of service you like, go ahead and buy this modem.1This review is for those less familiar with terminology/settings for these types of devicesI moved into a new place in LA recently and needed a reliable wireless cable modem & router that was compatible with Time Warner, as I work from home from the computer doing remote software configuration and hold a lot of shared-screen net meetings every day. Although some will advise you to get a separate modem and router rather than a combined unit, I decided to try this combo modem/router ("gateway"), and in 2 months of use, it's been very fast, reliable, and perfect for my needs. For those who aren't sure what is meant by "dual band," it means that when you go to connect to a wireless network, you'll see two signals there coming from this router that you can connect to (using the default password provided on a little sticker on the unit itself). The 2.4 GHz band connection is slower and likely more congested with most of your neighbors who are probably using this band, but it has a longer wireless range than the the 5 GHz band, which is likely much less congested due to the need for both a 5 GHz capable router as well as a 5 GHz capable wireless card in your computer or device, and much faster (double for me), but with shorter range.Unless/until you change them using the Genie software (covered below), they'll probably show up in the list as something like NETGEAR for the 2.4 band, and NETGEAR 5G if your wireless card is 5 GHz capable. It's usually a good idea to change these to something more unique so that potential hackers don't know what router/gateway you are using. On with my personal results . . .I don't like wires, so I only connect wirelessly, and I can only tell you what my wireless connection results have been living in a 1000 sq. ft., 2 bedroom condo in the heart of Los Angeles where right now I'm seeing 16 other 2.4 GHz wireless networks and one other 5 GHz.Range - While the range is shorter on the 5 GHz signal, for me, it only goes down 1 bar if I move to another room, but this is going to vary by your own floor plan, walls between rooms, how congested your area is with others connecting on the same band and channel, etc.Speed - I just ran a test while writing up this review and got 104.14 Mbps download and 11.10 upload speeds on the 5 GHz band. I normally get anywhere from 80 Mbps or so at the most congested times of day, to a high of almost 110 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, and anywhere from 40 to 50 Mbps downloads speeds on the 2.4 band, and consistently 10 Mbps or so upload speed on both bands. Again, keep in mind that the speed you may get will depend on what speed you pay your Internet provider for, whether your wireless card is capable of receiving the 5.0 signal to get the faster speed this modem is capable of, network congestion, etc.Oddly, the card in my newer computer isn't 5 Ghz capable, so I don't' see that network connection in my list when logging on from that computer, while the wireless card in my older computer is 5 GHz capable. Also, my old iPhone 4s isn't, while my iPad 4 is. But for me, getting speeds of around 50 Mbps pretty consistently on the 2.4 band in a congested area with 4 devices connected (not including my wireless printer) is far more than I need to do anything I do with my computers.Reliability - What was most important to me was reliability with no dropped connections while I'm working, and so far it's been rock solid. In over 2 months, I've had a total of one time where it disconnected at about midnight for about 10 minutes and then connected on its own again without my needing to do anything. I suspect the drop was the cable company and not the unit. I have not had to reset the unit even once. One more thing I'm pleased about is that my Brother MFC-7860DW wireless All-In-One printer (in a different room than this Netgear Gateway) has no issues scanning wirelessly with this. I was a little concerned because I temporarily lived in another condo for 2 months while waiting to move into this one, that place had a Netgear Gateway, and I couldn't get it to scan wirelessly, something I never had a problem with when I was using my DSL wireless modem from AT&T. This is important for me because I sometimes have to sign and scan documents to send, and it seems like everyone has moved to emailing scanned documents instead of faxing.I found the Netgear Genie software intuitive and easy to use/navigate. To log in, simply type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar in your browser, or "routerlogin.net" (works the same). There, you'll see a place to type in a username and password. The default username "admin," and the default password is "password" (unless/until you change it), and you're in!From there, you can do all sorts of things including seeing what channels your neighbors are on so that you can pick a less congested channel. I let the software choose the least congested channel for me (choose "Auto" for this). You can also change the default connection password from the one on the sticker on your Netgear unit if you want, see the status of your cable connection (good, fair, etc.), a network map showing the number of devices connected to the router/gateway, what they are (if you see something unfamiliar, someone might be on your network), set parental controls, and even enable a "Guest" wireless network that visiting guests can use to connect, separate from your own so that you don't have to give them your connection password. One last thing. From the other reviews I've read, you can't connect to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) with this unit. If you don't know what that is, you probably don't need to care. Until recently, my work required using a VPN for certain things. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Otherwise, this device wouldn't work for my needs.I hope this review helps others who have either already purchased it, or might be considering it. Again, I can only give you my experience with this device after using it for 2 months. Your results may vary.5Parental Controls Are TrickyIt works OK as a modem, I think. I do have much slower download speed than the cable company promised but it's TBD whether that's this modem/router or something else responsible. I really liked the idea of having parental controls without having to pay for a monthly service but it's not working out as expected. You have to get a free OPENDNS account to set up PC and I can login to OPENDNS from their site but when I use that same login to get to PCs through the modem app, it just spins until it fails so effectively I have no PCs with this device despite their claims. I think it's been a know issue for months and months with no resolution. So if you need PCs, don't expect to have them with this device. I called support and they really just had no idea what to do about it.--Update --Though firmware updates are supposed to be automatically pushed by your ISP per Netgear. Mine (Atlantic Broadband) does not but they were willing to do it upon request and with the current Firmware, PCs work as advertised. Wasteds several hours of my life figuring out that one. I hope this saves someone elsse from the same ordeal. About the speed, this router is not as fast as ones with 5G but I moved it to a slightly more central area and that helped so it's fast enough for me (I get about 30 Mbps though the advertized speed of my ISP is 100Mbps). The rented 5G one I tried got me more like 60Mbps.4Faulty Hardware - Recurring Issues For Multiple Customers DO NOT BUYThis may be my first review, as I feel compelled to warn others. I bought this unit two weeks ago, and it is really having issues. I'm a fairly technical person (I sell software for a living, have built a number of computers, etc.) - and have traced recurring internet issues to this unit directly. The problem is, multiple times a day anymore the device simply stops working correctly. Internet is slow or non-existent, and the device itself barely responds to a ping (if at all). A reset will fix the problem, but then it comes back within a few hours. The cycle has gone from a couple of days between resets to a few hours over just a couple of weeks. The price looks too good to be true for a combination unit for a reason. Steer clear - I've noticed the issues I'm experiencing are listed in numerous other reviews as well.1DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!I would like to start by saying this is the first time that I am ever writing a negative review for Amazon. Anyway I purchased this modem/router to replace my cox modem and another router and hope to get better service in my 1600 sgft home. After installing this modem/router it worked great for a month, then it started to randomly drop signal. Now I can not connect any more devices to this unit. (I only have two phones and a laptop connected.) The first thing i did was contact the manufacture tech support, they could not help. In fact they made it worse, now I am not able to use the internet at all at home because it not is completely cut off everything. So i guess i am out of the $100+ that i spent on this product. Hopefully the next one will actually work.1Beware of the Fraud.Beware of the fraud. It claims to allow speed upto 300 Mbps, but allows speed upto 10 Mbps "till you call the support and ask them to increase the speed".I bought this item 2 years back. I used to have Xfinity connection of 10 Mbps. The modem worked ok with 10 Mbps. After 2 years I upgraded my connection to 50 Mbps and expected the modem to support the speed. But to my shock the Netgear guys said it supports only speed upto 10 Mbps and to increase the speed limit I have to take a 6 month Technical support subscription for $99.So my question is when it claims to be allowing a speed of 300 Mbps at the time of purchase, why should I pay $99 to get my speed increased. Apart the cost of Technical support exceeds the cost of new Modem. I had to bang my head and write mails in order to get my speed upgraded.1Disappointed....Netgear user since 2002. As always I type in "Netgear gateway" and bought it without hesitation.Set up was easy as always. Plug it, call ISP, done. Then I realize it took forever to load a page and tested the speed. First I got 500+ ping, and thought it was one of those set up phase. Tried again later. Even higher ping then.Would be unfair to say Netgear's quality is slowly degrading only by this model, but still. Netgear used to be my #1 go-to networking brand but I should give a second thoughts now.1Possibly the worst DOCSIS 3.0 modem out there...I bought the C3700|N600 from Amazon around April 2016 and left it in the box for about a month. Switched from AT&T UVerse to Cox and the Cox technician installed the C3700 and performed the initial configuration while I was at work one day. I changed the SSIDs, passphrases, and looked at the rest of the configuration interface a few weeks later, but left everything else as originally configured. I didn't really notice it at first, but it seems like everyone in my family were having connectivity problems from the beginning. I believe the PS3 physically connected to an 8-port 1GbE switch that is connected to the C3700 has worked flawlessly. All 2.4Ghz wireless connections (three iPhone 6 devices, a MacBook Pro (El Capitan), two Samsung DVD players, and one Amazon Fire Stick) had fairly good signal strength when connected, but would occassionally disconnect from the C3700 wireless. We would attempt to reconnect and type in the passphrase over and over again and always received an error stating "Incorrect password for . The SSID was available and still had a strong signal. The only way to resolve this was to reboot the C3700. It seems that this happens at least once a week. I changed the 2.4Ghz channel last night in hopes that would resolve the problem, but it seems to continue today. This may be unrelated, but our 2.4Ghz wireless speed was sub 2Mbps when I tested last night. Cox Preferred is a 50Mbps down connection. Also probably unrelated, but our 5Ghz wilreless range is pretty much contained to the room that the c3700 is located in, so we don't use it very often. The 90 day support has expired a long time ago. I have read many more people have had similar and/or worse problems with this device. I cannot recommend it to anyone at this time.1Excellent choiceI was interested in purchasing a modem because I have to pay $10 a month for Comcast xfinity service if I use their box. After 10 months this unit will already pay for itself.I started out buying a refurbished Aris unit that was supposedly compatible. That's two hours of my life that I'll never get back. The unit didn't work so I decided to buy new and went with this unit based on the reviews.Within 15 minutes I was online. I opened the box, unplugged my current router/wifi unit, plugged this one in, logged onto the router (instructions on how to were included) and called Xfinity. Calling Xfinity was what took the longest as they had to activate it on their end. I waited about 10 minutes for my new modem to communicate with Comcast and then boom it was working.Dare I say that it's actually faster than the previous modem? Maybe I"m just excited about saving $10/month. I highly recommend this unit. Our apartment is 1100 square feet and we keep the modem in a separate room. Internet is crisp and fast.******UPDATE 8/20/18*********2 years in and this thing stops working. I went to my cable company and used their router for a day to test and see if my router was the issue. Plug theirs in and boom, normal wifi speeds. I contacted Netgear to see what help they could offer only to be informed that it would be AT LEAST a $90 charge. So yeah, its a cheap modem in the beginning but that all depends on how long it lasts. Their tech support is only included in the first 90 days so if you have issues after that you're looking at a charge that's MORE THAN THE COST OF THE ROUTER just to fix it. I can't recommend a company that doesn't stand behind their product.1Finicky and unreliable after a year and a half. Decent value for that period. It served me well for about a year and half with full speeds and decent reliability. After that, it started dropping the connection a couple times a week. By about a month later, it was dropping the connection several times a day. Since I work online from home, this was unacceptable. It somehow always dropped during a conference call or in the middle of some critical remote connection. Comcast/Xfinity sent a tech over since they were not seeing issues with the lines (though I don't put much stock in their phone support since I somehow end up knowing more about it than they). After he tested the line and jiggered things outside, it came back to life but after a week it was acting up again. The second tech told me these are super sensitive to interference and once they get past a year or so they become unreliable because of it. He gave me a Comcast modem (Cisco) and the line has been pretty stable since. I'm still giving it three stars because in a year and a half it paid for itself a couple times over in saved equipment rental fees from Comcast but it would have been four stars were it not so finicky. Someone suggested wrapping it in aluminum but I don't want to bother. I'm shopping for a new one.I would say, if your line is very reliable with good stable lines (Comcast is definitely not that as of this writing in the Seattle area), this is a great value. the speeds are exactly what you pay for and combined with a good router, it served me well. If your local provider is using old lines (in your building or on their network), get something more robust.3
