Customer Reviews

First one I got was bad, replacement sent by Netgear works. And 2 weeks later, the replacement DIED.I've been working with Network switches for over 20+ years. I really wanted this GS308T to work because it was inexpensive but has full management capabilities. I needed the SNMP so I can monitor each port which is not available on other lower cost Netgear 8 port switches [some are managed, but don't have SNMP, can you believe that???].I was able to set it up out of the box, and within 30 minutes, had all my VLAN, IP and SNMP configured. In about 2 hours, the switch died... Stopped talking via the GUI and SNMP... 30 minutes after that the switch quit answering PING requests, it quit routing packets and shutdown all ports... power off and on, and it's back up... Runs for another couple of hours... or less.. Then power reset is required to get it going... Totally aggravating.Either I got a bad one, or this switch has an issue. Checked the firmware, it's running current firmware according to Netgear's website.I did open a ticket with Netgear, but this product is ONLY chat/email support. I had to go back and forth for a whole week proving my point with Netgear. Finally, they sent a replacement and the replacement has been working so far [it it dies, I will change my rating accordingly]. This is why this review went from 1 star [failed device] to 3 stars [device works, but Netgear took forever to admit they needed to send me a new one].So, if I could, I would give the device 5 stars in that the GS308T is a real managed device. It has QOS, VLAN, all those goodies and most importantly, to me at least, SNMP. For the price, it's a wonderful device that allows me to connect my devices and manage the connections. BUT 1 star for taking forever to admit to the flaky bad unit finally sending me a replacement after what I consider to be to much time [over a week]. Remember, if you open a ticket with Netgear, they won't answer it for 48 hours regardless.UPDATE: The replacement died about 2 weeks after getting it... At this point, I can't send it back to AMAZON, I don't want to even try to waste my time with Netgear... Time to move on to some other product as the GS308T has SERIOUSLY BAD ISSUES.1GS308T couldn't be found.GS308TCould not be access via default IP address, could not be found on network. Netgear's software could not find it. Windows could not find it, several attempts with Linux machines probing it could not find it. Resetting the switch solved nothing.Functioned just find as an un-managed switch in that it was still passing traffic along per usual, but this is not what I purchased it for.Lately almost every piece of Netgear tech I've purchased or had to deal with has been having issues, I believe it's time to jump ship.1Decent L2 switchI bought this to keep some noisy HDMI senders isolated so they could tear up their own vlan and leave the rest of my network in peace. For this it worked great and was easy to configure. The docs are decent too. This is playing nice with a TP-Link smart switch on the other end, which it should (thanks "standards") but still, it's nice when things just work.4J.U.N.KDude, I would NOT recommend this piece of CRAP to anybody who doesn't want to pull her/his hair out in frustration. I purchased 3 NetGear "smart" switches (different models) and they ALL turned out to be complete junk; they were all promptly returned. They would SPONTANEOUSLY disappear from the network. I could not ping or discover them in the discovery application that they provided (reserved IP). MOVE on to something better.1Great switch with ho-hum web interfaceI have it mounted in a wall-mount network rack at home with 12 connections including 4 that are link-aggregated/bonded connecting to my Synology NAS. The switch works great. The web-based user interface isn't very polished, but once configured, I'm incredibly happy with this switch. If ease of management was a higher priority to me, I'd have knocked off one or two stars, but the switch works great and I'm happy with the LACP (link aggregation/bonding) capability for multiple users trying to stream data to/from my NAS concurrently (each user can conceivably get up to a gigabit of bandwidth, albeit the HDD setup in my NAS can't support that much throughput, but more than a single gigabit connection would provide).5This switch is very easy to maintainThis switch is very easy to maintain considering I upgraded from a GS308E. My only problem came when I started configuring VLANs -- I had a very good working plan from the GS308E but the GS308T kept freezing and had to be reset several times. I found it very convenient to save the configuration (this model require a tftp server to restore), but being able to resume from where I left off instead of starting from scratch was a blessing. I never made a backup of a Netgear product before the configuration was fully completed before.5GS715Tv3's Web Interface REQUIRES Java Plugin for Full Functionality, BUT...The big three web browsers Chrome, Firefox, & Safari stopped supporting the Java plug-in last year, in 2018, more than a year after Google, Mozilla, & Apple announced their intention to do so.But the web interface on the Netgear GS716Tv3 requires the Java plugin for all of its features most importantly to me, a listing of connected devices to function. Yes, I could use a 3rd-party app to provide the same info, but that's not the point.Since purchasing this switch, I have learned that the original version was released in 2013, 6 years ago, and though Netgear has posted several firmware updates, none has addressed this core issue. Also they're still listing this switch as a current model, even with its hobbled functionality.I've been a big fan of Netgear GS-series switches. Over the past 20 years, I ve installed dozens of them for clients and have run a pair of them in my home, and of all those only one has failed and that because of a failed wall wort, not the switch. But selling a product as new and fully-functional when in fact it isn t is inexcusable.I m sending the GS716Tv3 back and browsing the offerings from other manufacturers. And to Netgear I say, your switches have gone from my go-to to my use-with-caution list.1and they've been working great. The web UI is pretty goodI have two of these, and they've been working great. The web UI is pretty good, and there's a cisco-like CLI available via telnet on port 60000 if you want it. I swapped out the fan with this PWM fan, and the switch is nearly silent but still stays cool. Evercool-40x40x20mm-Dual-Ball-Bearing EC4020SH12BP5Awesome little switchesThese are fantastic switches. Love these. VLAN setup is easy, and includes PVID so you can connect a NIC that cant do VLAN tagging to a VLAN. Multiple VLANs per port. Perfect for labs and remote offices. We setup 5 as we mocked up a 3 remote location scenario for a customer with firewalls and routers at each. They handled multiple firewall zones and vLANs perfectly.5Great ValueVery nice unit and value in my opinion. I recently upgraded from a Cisco SG-200-08, and for the same price I paid 6+ years ago for the Cisco, I get 8 more Gig ports with 2 more possible ports using GBIC (SFP), and easier configuration and more features. The initial setup was kinda kludgy for me as I do not use DHCP, so I had to laptop direct-connect and get things going. I think that the utility they ship with the device (SmartControlCenter) shows a lack of software development on their end. After I got things setup, I found the Firmware and Boot file were at the latest versions.I was able to setup a 2 port LAG to my NAS with jumbo frames, setup a few VLAN's for testing, and connect my virtual hosts using NFS and iSCSI with relative ease.I could not get the Device View to work (a known Java issue), or the TFTP functions to work. HTTP functions work fine. When a new Firmware does come out, I will say that I will be apprehensive to update, unless I find an issue directly affecting me.4
