Customer Reviews

Excellent stone to help restore an edge on old hand plane irons I picked up this stone, as well as the Chosera 3000 grit, for keeping my knives sharp and to help restore some old hand plane irons. This stone is fantastic, it's easy to tell that it's high quality and will last a long time as long as I treat it properly. This stone is great for restoring the edge on old hand plane irons, it's a great grit to use to flatten them back down without having to take off more iron than is needed. 5As good as it's reputation This stone is almost all you need to maintain every knife edge in your home. Unless the knife is extremely dull or damaged, this stone should be able to bring your knives to a fine edge that a little stropping from a leather strop should be all you need to maintain a razor sharp edge. The addition of the base and touch up stone are nice touches. A hard product to beat for the price ... make no mistake about it, this is a professional quality stone. 5Reasons to choose this over the popular King 1000/6000 Combo. Found this like some of the other reviewers through a YT channel called Burrfection. I had never gotten into the hobby before but I did have a handful of dull knives. I picked this up along with the Chosera #400 and the Chosera #3000. I'm certainly no professional but I have definitely gotten my knives sharper with this trio. Why I chose this expensive combo over the starter King 1000/6000 set that everyone usually gets? Well the main selling point was that these were 'Splash and Go' - which essentially meant that you could just run some water over them for 20-30 seconds and they would be good to go. The King, on the other hand, requires a more substantial 20-30 minute soaking session. If you can plan accordingly, the King will serve you just fine as it is substantially more affordable. But if you don't want to wait before sharpening, this is definitely the way to go. 5PERFECTION I made the mistake of buying the King Deluxe 1000 as my first Japanese whetstone. Dont get me wrong, the King 1000 is a very good stone at $20. However, after using it for a couple of months I got tired of having to soak it for 30+ minutes every time and decided to invest in a good splash and go. The Chosera 800 was a great choice without a doubt. I do not regret having spend $20 on the King because now I have a reference and a good second stone. However, most people who are just looking for an effective option to sharpen their knives would be better off saving the $20 and just buying the Chosera 800.PROS:- Cutting speed is just great. You can sharpen dull knives in 5 minutes- Feel and feedback are very nice- Real splash and go. Just splash some water and you are ready to go.- Very slow wearing. Will last for many many years- Plastic base provides hand clearance and non-slip base- Comes with high-quality nagura stoneCONS:Not a single complainTO BE NOTED: Naniwa offers a Professional Series which are the same stone without the base and with a higher price. You should buy the Choseras instead while still in stock. 5Great stone This stone is great I can take away small chips with it. It has great feed back and it s a fast cutter. If your on a budget, this stone with a good strop( I recommend a paddle strop with bark river white and black compound sold on DLT trading) is all you would ever need. Does not leave a mirrored edge like one the pic though that was my finished productafter a 10,000 grit stone and some stropping with bark river white compound. 5Love these stones If your doing your research and thinking about this or another brand STOP and get the chosera. Best stone I've ever owned by far. Great tactile feedback and won't need to be flattened as much or at all depending on your use. And for those of you thinking about the 800 or the green 1000 I recommend getting the 800.its not a true 800 grit, it feels and cuts more like 1200-1500 5Buy this stone! Last year I upgraded from my 20 year old Henkels Pro S to a Mac Pro MTH-80. I bought the $30 King 1000/6000 combo stone and learned how to sharpen by watching youtube videos. The King 1000 grit side dished quickly, cut slowly and created a thick muddy swarf that consisted of as much particulate from the stone as from the knife (not good). It did get the knives sharp but it was difficult to raise a consistent burr. After spending an embarrassing amount of time researching stones (I have no life) I decided to buy the Chosera 800.The Chosera arrived in the mail today and I immediately tried it out on both my Henkels and my Mac Pro. The difference between the Chosera and the King is night and day. First off, the Chosera is noticeably more dense. It will undoubtedly last a lifetime. This is a true splash and go. I wet the stone and started sharpening. The Chosera is a fast cutter compared to the King. I was able to raise a consistent burr in under a minute on each side. The feel of the stone is so much smoother than the King. It was much easier to sharpen on this stone with great feedback.I would recommend this stone to anyone including beginners. I wish I had bought this one 1st rather than spending a year learning how to sharpen on the King. The Chosera is jut so much easier and produces better results. 5If you have just one stone, let it be this one Will you re-profile an edge with this stone? With a lot of time, sure but I don't recommend it.Will you get a polished and refined edge with this stone? Nope. Never going to happen. Will you quickly restore a quality edge with an excellent amount of bite necessary for kitchen food prep tasks? You better believe you will. 5Well worth the price I bought this stone based on testing and recommendations by Ryky Tran in his YouTube channel "Burrfection". I have used it to sharpen to razor edge our old never-sharpened Wusthof knives. Ryky Tran did not lie; this Naniwa Chosera 800 worked perfectly just as he described: very efficient, smooth with very good feedback to your sharpening hands. No polishing stones needed, though much later I may get finer grit Choseras for my still very sharp Moritaka knives. For everyday sharpening this Naniwa Chosera 800 is well worth the price. 5One of the best stones on the market One of the best stones on the market. Feedback is great and cutting speed is really fast. Really let s you know what s happening to the blade. Scratch pattern on edges makes me think this stone is higher grit level than the 800 indicates. (Maybe 1000-1500?) Splash and go is amazing, no more waiting 15-45 minutes for stone to soak before sharpening. Stone has almost no load up after a sharpening.I used this to make my $30 knives feel like $300 knives. Used in conjunction with a ceramic rod and stroping on cardboard/leather to make it razor sharp. Makes knives sharper than an everyday chef at home could ever need. Feels like the only stone I need.Glued to plastic stand, comes with soft 600 nagara stone (cleaning stone)This line is discontinued and replaced by Naniwa professional which doesn t come with plastic base and is thinner while being more expensive. 5
