Customer Reviews

Perfect For Backpacking I have the larger DMT stones, and this little sharpener is the same high quality. Made in the USA. At 1.6 ounces, it s perfect for backpacking. Remove the key ring and you ll cut the weight in half. Most pocket sharpeners are the draw through type. A little research will show that those are too aggressive and do not hone a good edge. This is hands down the best portable option on the market. 5Fits well on a keychain. Easy to use. I put this on my keychain and it has the added benefit of helping me find my keys. This is very easy to use even for beginners. You may be surprised at how often a sharpener like this comes in handy such as keeping your pocket knife sharp, fish hooks, hatchets, or the family dinner because your Mom is scared of sharp knives so she keeps hers to dull to anything. 5What? this is only $8 ? ? this was only less than $8 ? Oh Me Gosh !I have been trying to sharpen knives for months, trying the stones, and an hour of multiple grade sandpaper - 800 to 3000, and best I got was the 'tear cut' on paper.10 minutes with this and I have 3 blades that cut paper -- without the tearing on microscopic level so to speak --I have been looking at diamond sharpeners for a while, thought they were a bit expensive, but with these results I believe they are well worth the price. and this one is a handy back pack size at a very good price. One tip, there are several ways to sharpen a knife, I found it hard to keep the knife steady on the same angle with the sharpener on the table, so I hold the knife steady and use the sharpener like a file, -for me- this gives me the control to keep the angle, even around the corner to the point. Light stroke in, and even lighter stroke back, and not 90 to the blade but 30 -- not the angle of the grind but rather the angle of the file to the blade length, results in file lines going along the blade edge rather than directly into the edge.Yes I recommend this product, Yes I will be purchasing the coarser and finer versions to go along with this, Yes this is the Best back pack/ prep-kit sharpener I have ever seen. 5DMT makes the absolute best diamond infused sharpeners. The small size is great to take with you anywhere you will need a sharp blade, i.e. fishing or hunting or working outdoors. The fine grade works quickly to restore a mildly dull blade to very, very sharp. If you need extremely sharp, try the extra fine, but it will take a while on a dull blade, or conversely use the coarse one on very dull blades, then switch to the fine, and on up. 5The best field sharpener you can carry I have 4 of these and have bought another 5 or 6 as presents. I keep one tucked into the pouch on my leatherman, one in my truck, another in my hunting pack and the last in my shop. Nothing puts a coarse edge on a blade quite like this sharpener. I have been buying these since 2002 and cant say enough how good they are. I race sail boats and nothing dulls a blade like cutting kevlar or dynema. The coarse mini-sharp takes 4 or 5 swipes and the blade is as sharp as can be. If you want to fine hone blades or chisels, you may want to look at the combo medium-fine, but for field work, you would be sorely mistaken to chose any other sharpener. Its tiny, folded about 3.5 inches, very light and with the key chain attachment can be lashed anywhere. Cant say enough good things about this product. When one wears out (which takes quite a while), I don't hesitate to just buy another as the price is attractive. I tend to wash them with warm water every couple of months or as fine build up accumulates in the pores. 5it's small and handy DMT Fine stone. If you can figure out how to ... A mini sharpening stone I bought for my brother to use, it's small and handy DMT Fine stone. If you can figure out how to sharpen on a small stone such as this your set. How good this stone truly is all dependent on you as a sharpener. I also own various other small DMT stones from C-EF and their stones work extremely well from my experience and this one is no difference. If your planing on buying this as your only stone though, I may look elsewhere as it may be a quick way to get frustrated while learning as a larger stone probably be easier to learn on. 5Nice portable knife sharpener I have the vg-10 spyderco manbug knife and the cold steel recon 1 micro knife and I keep one of them on my keychain. This Diamond Mini-Sharp Sharpener is going to be kept in my maxpedition micro pouch for when I need to sharpen my blades. But I also just bought another knife sharpener that I will keep on my keychain so I can always do a touch up to the blade and that knife sharpener is called 'handy sharp'. I bought the smallest handy sharp they make off their website because it fits on my keychain better.I am a little bit worried about the plastic that this is made out of to be strong, but I'll update if it breaks or fails in someway. 4Good sharpener but the description is off. I really like the Mini-sharp Diamond portable folding sharpener, it works fantastic I usually use other sharpening methods for sharpening but I bought this to fit in a holster for my survival/camping knife. I figure the x-course would be more useful for putting a quick edge on a more heavy duty knife, ax or machete.Beware the measurements are different than on the description. Closed it's 1-3/16" x 3-3/16", open it's 5-3/16" not including key ring. Also, the cover is Clear, not Black like in the ad picture. 4This probably the third or fourth DMT fine grit pocket sized diamond sharpeners that I have purchased ... This probably the third or fourth DMT fine grit pocket sized diamond sharpeners that I have purchased in my life. This performs exactly as expected. The folding cover blocks the 20% nearest to the hinge, but I simply removed that with my knife in about 30 seconds. It is well worth it's sub-ten dollar price to me, as I usually get several years of hard use out of each one, and the size and weight make it disappear in my pocket until I need it. I have had people ask me where I got my sharpener, because I don't just use it for sharpening knives. I sharpen dmm probe tips, dress damaged screwdriver blades, remove sharp burrs on metal which had scratched me, etc.. Obviously it could be used to sharpen a piece of a tin can lid or other thin metal to improvise a cutter if you needed to. I don't put anything on my stones before I use them, but I've heard that some guys think a few drops of windex helps. 4Extra fine is a good descriptor Extra fine is a good descriptor. After a few swipes across the surface of this tool, I could tell it was very fine grit. In retrospect, I should have gotten fine (not extra fine) because it would be more satisfactory for my purposes -- a few swipes to clean up an already sharp blade on the trail. Plus, the grit does start to wear down after use. It gets less abrasive as you use it. In a way, that's a good thing. I particularly like the sound of that on a medium grit sharpener, but on an extra fine grit sharpener... well, it's not the sharpener's fault. It is what it says it is and it does what it says it does.Observations:- I read that part of the sharpener is not usable due to how it comes out of the case... a quarter inch or so remains covered in enough plastic that it's not usable. My solution... use it at close to a 90 degree angle. I stand the case straight up at a 90 degree angle to the table or surface I am sharpening on. This leaves the sharpener resting with one end slightly raised in the case (a half inch or so) and the other end rests on the table at about a 103 or so degree angle... in short, it's a darn good sharpening angle for a small pocket knife (my Opinels) and it utilizes nearly 100 percent of the sharpener by exposing that last half inch or so. To use, hold the blade parallel to the table and swipe into sharpener. Then turn and do the same on the other side. I swipe toward the case (see the pic). Works great.- Keychain makes a good way to attach it to loops on my backpack. Plus it fits anywhere. Very small, very light. Weighs 29 grams.- It's really not made for knives with longer blades. Yes, it will work... just like a butter knife will work to remove a flat head screw, all things working correctly. But it's not "right" for the job. What it's good for is working edges on hunting knives or utility knives in your hunting pack or backpack. It's for the trail, not the home.- Extra Fine is smooth after 10-20 minutes of sharpening time. It does have micro-fine grit and it does work. But if you're trying to get a dull axe sharp, you'd better go with a coarser grit and be prepared to work for a long time because it's really "right" for blades less than three inches. 4
