Customer Reviews

Alot for the monrySaw this product in a YOUTUBE video, it is very high quality, it can be used as a stand alone practice key and also has connections so it can be hooked and used to key with. it will run a battery or can be plugged in, and it has an earphone jack. I cant enough about the quality of this piece of gear, it is alot of bang for the buck. If you are interested in CW on HAM radios its a great pc for the money.5Excellent Practice KeyerIt feels like I am on the net coding. I have gone from just knowing the Morse code to quality practice. I like the head phone jack because my wife gets irritated if I practice without headphones in the house. Since this purchase I have purchased a Straight key and a Bug. I am almost to the point where I should be able to go on the net and CW.5Meh. I wouldn t buy it againA few months ago I decided to learn Morse code and decided to try this out. As with many MFJ products the physical build quality is pretty solid, but the overall performance is mediocre. The sound quality is pretty poor and sounds something akin to a poorly executed attempt at electronically mimicking the cries of a dying animal. The sound feedback is not crisp and clean like you would expect when listening to code on the air, which may be the result of poor response of the key itself. I used this for a week or so and gave up on it for practicing on an actual decent quality Morse key attached to my radio. There are definitely better options out there.3Key doesn't fitFor the life of me, I cannot get the key to sit in the holder. The package was partly opened and the key and spring were lying loose. I don't have the skills anymore to reassemble broken products.1Works with 12 year olds! Arrived promptly and was easy to set up. I use this to teach CW to fifth graders and it has withstood their use. Even considering getting a second one. 5Exactly What do You expect from a Training Tool?I've seen some of the other reviews for this product, and I frankly wonder if some of the negative reviewers suffer from OCD.This is a training tool, and not designed as a "true" straight key.Yes, it doesn't have adjustments for left-to-right alignment, but if the contacts are making contact, then who cares? If they are reallyfar off you could bend the ears holding the paddle to make them align better. (Whatever happened to HAM's modifying their equipment?)As far as the two adjustments that are critical, gap and pressure, you can tune this key to whatever you like. (Think light and light!!!)My initial irk with the unit was that even under battery power, the frequency would shift, which was kinda annoying to a former audioengineer. Then, listening to the radio and trying to decode CW, I found that what you heard would also shift, so now I count that as abonus, a sort of "this is what you could expect to hear" kinda thing.Once I learn the code, I plan on using this product in real-time until I can find a vintage straight key73's!5Raspy Tone & Chintzy KeyWhen using the recommended internally installed 9 volt battery, the audio output on both internal speaker and external earphone was raspy and tone frequency range was limited. The morse code key was chintzy. I was surprised at the poor performance overall as MFJ is usually better quality. Gave to my 11 year old grand daughter who didn't know the difference, but I was disappointed to give her a low quality item. Unit is usable but.... Possible it would work better with external 12 volt power supply - better tone sound and frequency range. I didn't try an external 12 volt power supply as unit wouldn't be the portable unit I needed for grand daughter.3CQ CQ CQ I am a "old IMCO" operator from the USN. Recently, I decided to flake off some of the rust and try my hand at CW on the Amateur Bands. This keyer is perfect for that. It is small enough I can take it with me in my various travels, but heavy enough it does not move around on my desk. I have recommended to some of my Ham friends. 5Built like a Brick - Which is GoodThis is a solidly-built straight CW keyer. I've "book-learned" morse code, but keying morse is another thing. I practice using this with a morse code app that reads and decodes sound signals. Then I can tell whether I'm keying the letters and numbers correctly, and whether I'm pausing between letters and words correctly at different speeds. It works fine with either a 9V battery or a 12V DC adapter. The sound module is definitely analog, with some variation in pitch ("chirp"), but it's not a problem for practice. If connected to a radio, you must disconnect the key from the sound module hence it will not be used at all, so the chirp from the sound generation module isn't an issue. The tension and throw adjustments are a tried-and-true design that work well for light touch activation and release.5Great educational gadget for practicing Morse CodeWell-made with a good, solid feel and reliable operation. The volume and pitch of the tone are adjustable. The key works as promised.A tip. The headphone jack is monaural. I'd be willing to bet that most headphones sold nowadays are stereo. In the latter case, only one earpiece will sound. A mono-stereo adapter will bring sound to the other ear as well.5Built like a tank. Great valuePro: Heavyweight and sturdily built. Takes external or internal power supply or 9V battery. Key throw is fully adjustable and precise. Tone is good, good volume control as well. Con: NONE. This has helped me develop my 'fist' and gotten me back in the swing as I renew my amateur radio communications. Buy one!5A good product made by good people.I miss the days when someone could walk in to any Radio Shack and buy a solid brass key for $6.95, BUT those days are gone :-( and I have to get used to it. This is a nice little straight key on a solid, heavy base, and I like having the oscillator to practice CW in the car (yes, I'm that nuts) when I'm not making actual contacts. About that, it's quite easy to modify this unit to quickly switch between practice and sending, mine has a 1/4" jack in the side for the transmitter, the kind that breaks tip connection when you plug in but if you've read this far you know what to do :-) Sorry MFJ, guess my warranty is void. And about MFJ, they are one of the best known and highest quality manufacturers in the business, well known and loved by many in the amateur radio world. Check out their guarantee. Before I sign off, one important warning: And I ain't pointing fingers, I'm just sayin. If you're planning to buy radio equipment, or ANY equipment for that matter, through Amazon or eBay or craigslist or a classified ad in the newspaper, do yourself a favor and view or download a catalog from the manufacturer (you can download the entire MFJ catalog from their website) or a reliable reseller (GigaParts, Ham City, etc.) to ensure that the price is in the right ballpark and the warranties etc are intact. Cause somebody might, hypothetically, buy this unit for $50 and try to sell it to you for $150. I'm just sayin. Cheers!5Good First thing I did was get rid of the baseplate and hand key which is 4 screws. I then hooked it up to my vibroplex bug and used it to practice and works excellent and has good tone and volume control and small. Nobody else make code oscillators these days but I need one to practice using mechanical vibroplex bug as I do not like electronic keyers. The price is to high though but since nobody else make these they can charge what they want. They should sell just the oscillator box by itself and the user hooks up their favorite key. 5
