Customer Reviews

Buy this if you want a corded grinder I've used this grinder a few times on home projects, mainly working on cars... I'm a carpenter and first saw this grinder on the job still being used after 10 years of use (just hearsay but I believe it) when the battery powered grinders we use are not reasonable. So I needed my own grinder at home, felt the one I used at work a dozen times was good enough so I got my own.I'm actually amazed at the quality of the grinder, the case and the included cutting disks that it sells for $70-$80. I would pay probably $20 more for it and still feel like I got a good deal.Attached is a picture of the hole I cut in my truck bed to replace the fuel pump on my '01 GMC Sierra, no problems running it off of a 100' cord. 5This Is My New Favorite Tool! This thing is the bomb! I'm a woman who has a decent set of power tools but this is a new one for me... and it's already proven to be a fantastic addition to my toolbox.I recently bought a house and we are having a bunch of renovations done. I made it clear to my builder that I want to put in some sweat equity so he put me to work pulling up the tile and prepping the floor so he could put the wood floor down. After beating heck out of the floor for an hour I went to my phone and searched for "How to remove Thinset from a sub-floor" and came upon a video that showed a guy using one of these things along with a Diamond Grinding Wheel and a Dust Collector Hood. So I immediately ordered all 3 and waited eagerly for it to arrive.Assembly was reasonably easy... it's a little fiddly at first to hold down the lock pin while removing or adding a wheel, but otherwise it's pretty straight-forward. The dust shield was a little challenging to get on as well but I think both will get easier as I get used to using them. By the way, the dust shield is a definite necessity if you are doing anything dusty.... I wouldn't work without it now.I'm adding photos of the floor from when I started as well as one of the finished floor.... some of the thinset just would not come off with any beating with a hammer ... so I did a combination of knocking the loose stuff with the hammer than finishing with the grinder. The only thing I wish I had known (unrelated to this grinder) was that the expelling chute was a LOT smaller than the hose end on my shop-vac - thank heavens for Duct Tape!!!! I'll have to get an adapter for future use .... oh - and the dust clogged the shop vac filter so I had to clean it off several times... but none of that is the fault of the grinder or dust hood. The bonus was that we had a wall that had nails sticking through it and we just pulled out the grinder and changed wheels and ground them right off... so this thing is doing a great job earning it's keep already! I have another floor to do in the bathroom and having this makes it FAR less daunting to look forward to! 5Can't go wrong with this Purchase! Wow what can I say! This makes my 20th Makita small tool purchase dating back to 1980 when Rockwell circular saws went out of business. I have never known ANY problems with my Makita tools, like so many claim to have. When they wear out I send them back and have them rebuilt. I have been doing construction since 1975 and built over 400 homes renovated over 200 more and have operated some really junky tools but none of them are Makita's. This little grinder is a breeze to operate and the case is TOP SHELF! Four grinding disc's and a diamond wheel cutter and an extra wheel guard for under 80 bucks. WOW just WOW! 5Great little grinder, and the included case helps organize your shop I don't have a lot of experience with grinders, but I previously had a much larger (and more powerful) 7 inch grinder and my biggest complaint about it is that it was TOO BIG. It was heavy, it was very difficult to maneuver in tight spaces and it was so powerful, that too much material was removed in almost no time. This little grinder resolves all of those issues. It is very easy to maneuver in fairly tight spaces. It is also light weight so it won't fatigue the user. It is truly a joy to use!The included accessories store nicely in the included well-built case. I love knowing that all my accessories for it, like the spindle wrench, the removable guard, and the variety of discs, are all kept in the handy case so I don't have to go looking for them every time I need to use the grinder. The quality of the tool body, power cord, spindle and spindle wrench, and grinding discs are very high and it shows that the Makita brand is proud of their product. The grinding wheel guard is a bit flimsy, made from stamped metal, but it is certainly sufficient and light weight.PRO: quality materials and craftsmanship, small, maneuverable, light weight, accessories, storage case.CON: might be too small for large concrete or tile work 5No protection from overheating The grinder's initial build quality and workmanship seemed good considering the price. However, as someone new to using angle grinders, I was unaware of the risk of damaging the motor via overheating. Within 24 hours of opening the box, I had damaged the device by overworking it while grinding concrete.Because this is a common problem with angle grinders, imho Makita should have taken AT LEAST ONE of the following steps: (a) discussed the risk of overheating in the owner's manual, (b) provided a mechanism to issue a warning and/or shutdown the tool when internal temperature is too hot, and/or (c) covered this kind of damage in their warranty. Unfortunately none of these things is the case. 3Is this a joke? A fine example of Chinese quality. It looks like my old Makita, but after the first few minutes it started making a bad noise and the motor slowed noticeably. After less than five minutes it was apparent that the grinder head was trying to seize. They should give these to prisoners for April fools and watch them try to cut their way out, for fun. This grinder was a bad joke! I guess I'll try Milwakee or DeWalt. 1Makita 9557PBX1 (4.5", 7.5A, 10,000 RPM) - Great Grinder. Great Value. Great Case. I wanted to clear up the confusion as to what exactly is included. It comes with:(1) 9557PB angle grinder(1) Side Handle Grip(1) Type-27 guard(1) Type-1 guard(5) Makita Grinding Discs for steel/stainless(1) Makita Diamond Bladeplus owner's manual and the case of course. The case is aluminum with zinc coated hardware and latches. They should rust in no time. I spray nuts and bolts on floor jack and other zinc hardware to not rust, but I don't want to lube up these latches - I'd never be able to open the case. Oh well - better than a cardboard box.The case has eggcrate foam on the lid and tougher rubberized foam with cut outs for the tools and individual cutouts for each disc. Great protection for fragile wheels. Another thing I like is that the lid does not fully open. It goes a little past vertical and stops preventing damage to lid after a thousand times of throwing the lid open and it hitting the floor. This is my first Makita (M*lwaukee and R*dgid fan-boy here). It's a great value and works great. It ate through a Br*nks R70 disc-lock without blinking. Its small size allowed me to maneuver behind the weirdly shaped lock (enclosed hasp) butted up against a corner and melt through the lock one-handed. I have a 7-inch R*dg*d angle grinder that has waaay more power and lethality, but simply would not have been able to complete this job due to it's size. Another testament to having the right tool for the job. In this case, smaller is better. I'll admit it doesn't have the power of the big boys, but i'm not cutting through foundation or 2" plate. I'm also not melting extension cords or flipping breakers every few minutes. The included grinding wheels can handle mild steel as well as stainless and hold up way better than the Horrible Freight discs. Included discs must be precision balanced because the tool runs so smooth with these. The brand-new grinder and small diameter probably has something to do with that.It has paddle-switch operation (dead-man's) with lock-off and it can lock-on with a push button near base of paddle. Nice feature. Overall this grinder is definitely another great addition to my toolbox and wish I had it sooner. I might buy another one. It's a great tool and I would expect nothing less than the best from an industry leader in tool manufacturing.I haven't switched teams from M*lwaukee yet, but this little gem has definitely grabbed my attention.P.S. Wear a face shield if you like your vision. Safety glasses alone won't cut it. Wear both. With gloves and long sleeves. 5Runs hot Great grinder with great accessories. Bought mine to grind down the frame of my truck with a wire wheel. Got about 10% of the way (20mins of constant grinding) until I noticed the grinder getting very HOT but i kept going. Eventually I started to see smoke come from the vent area on the grinder. Let it cool down for an hour and it still seemed to work. Not sure if this is normal or not. 4Best 7 Amp Grinder I had a hard time deciding whether I needed this and as a result spent a lot of time here and at Home Depot researching this.Angle grinders are simple tools. All the major manufacturers basically offer slight variation of the same design. For 4.5" grinders you're basically choosing these things:Switch: Thumb/paddle/trigger switch, locking/non-lockingMotor: Usually 7/7.5A (~3.5lbs) or 10/11A (~4.5lbs)Miscellaneous: Tool-less guard adjustment etcPriceThat's about it. The closest competitors that I saw were the milwaikee 6130-33 and Dewalt D28110. Both of these have locking thumb switches. I thought milwaukee's switch is too small and flimsy feeling but I like the easily adjustable guard. The Dewalt has a larger and sturdier feeling switch but is heavier for a 7 Amp grinder at 4.1lbs.This tool has what I think is the ideal switch for a grinder - paddle switch. It runs the entire length of the tool so it doesn't limit how you can hold it but means that anytime you let go the tool is going to stop. It has a small latch, positioned in the middle that must be flipped before the paddle switch turns the tool on. This becomes natural after a few uses and prevents the tool from coming on accidentally when you put it down. Thumb switches by contrast, either require you to hold the tool in a very specific way, or force you to reach for the switch to turn it off. For a hand tool this powerful that's not ideal. So far I've only used it once to help a friend with rust on his car but given Makita's solid reputation (close or equal to Dewalt/Milwaukee) I expect this tool to last for a long time. On top of that of course, it includes a great case, 5 grinding disks and the diamond cutter. All round I think this is the best angle grinder out there. 5Very nice for the price I needed an angle grinder to smooth out a rather large bump in a concrete floor. Combining this with a dewalt 4 inch diamond cup wheel and a damo shroud hooked up to a 6 gallon shop vac worked like a dream. The combination trapped and evacuated all the dust leaving the room clear of dust and the floor smooth as anyone could hope. For a little grinder, this one had no problems grinding the area (about 2 square feet with a high point of half an inch above level) down to level in about 30 minutes. The only flaw was in the packaging for shipping. It was placed in a cardboard box with 2 other items and the only packing material was crumpled paper. The aluminum case was dented in two places and appeared to have been dented prior to shipping but it could have happened in transit and not left any marks on the shipping box. Amazon immediately offered a return/replacement for the product to correct the damage. All in all, I would recommend this for anyone looking for a grinder for small to not so small jobs where you need quality for an affordable price. 4
