Customer Reviews

A solid budget option with good battery life Amazon tends to dump all the maglite reviews together. This review refers to the regular Maglite Mini LED (currently 77 lumen), not the Pro or Pro+ versions. When I started shopping for a new LED light, I wanted a light with high and low modes - bright when I need extra light, low when I need to conserve batteries. I also wanted a light that uses standard AAs, not specialty batteries. This AA maglite offers a pretty good combination of price, performance, and battery life. It puts out 77 lumen for 11 hours, or about 19 lumen for over 31 hours. The beam is quite bright in the dark, and it can be focused, a feature not usually found on tactical lights. Yes, you can buy brighter lights. However, I find that this light puts out plenty of light while still providing solid battery life. The weak link on this light is probably the twist switch interface that maglite uses both for on/off and also to select between four modes: high, low, flash, and SOS. When you turn on the light, you default to high mode. To cycle to low mode, you twist off/on quickly. Cycle again to get to flashing mode, and once more to get to SOS. To get to the mode you want, you might have to cycle the light on/off 3 or 4 times. The reality is a bit better, since most people will use high and low modes most of the time. The light defaults to high mode when you turn it on, and low is only one click away.Still, the interface has a lot of room for improvement. I would prefer to have the on/off function on a click switch, which enables one-handed operation. At a minimum, I would kill the two flashing modes and leave just high and low. Mag must have heard this complaint, because the Pro+ version of this light has only high and low modes. I have a couple other small issues. One is the slippery texture of the exterior case. I definitely think more grip would be helpful. One other design issue is the fact that the battery compartment on this light opens on one end only. That's only a problem if you have a stuck and leaking battery you need to push out. There have been times I've had to throw away maglites for just this reason. If you like maglites, this LED model is light years ahead of the old bulb lights. For a light that provides more lumens and more features while taking somewhat more of your money, check out the Fenix LD12, a great LED flashlight that does nearly everything right. Though this AA maglite doesn't have the best interface out there, it remains a solid choice considering its low price. This light is good, if not quite great. 3Not as good as they use to be!!!!!!!!!!! I have bought MAGLITES of ALL sizes since they started selling. Never had a bad one. But the last two Mini Maglite's DO NOT WORK THAT GOOD. They shut off when they should not. I sent them in to be repaired. They said they DID repair it. WELL, it has the same problem as before. It shuts off when I am using it.I AM VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!!! I could ALWAYS DEPEND ON THEM. I guess they have gone the way of everything else. You buy one and just throw it away when it stops working.TOO BAD!!!!!!!! 2This one is just right This is a fantastic flashlight. I think it's actually a better choice for around the house than the expensive super-bright "tactical" types. The bright setting on this one is plenty bright, and the low setting is there if you want it. The battery life is 10 hours on the high setting and 30 hours on the low setting. The super-bright flashlights run through batteries in just a few hours and/or require weird battery types. That's why this one is perfect - plenty bright, great battery life, rugged, it's just going to work when you pull it out of the drawer even if the battery is a little low. Do watch out for battery leakage which will wreck it.You switch modes by turning it off and on quickly, so it's possible to change modes accidentally which can be confusing. I don't have a problem with it, but after 1 minute in my toddlers hand's, it was in blink mode. The Amazon product info for some of the colors is mixed up, blending in info from other Maglite AAs. Maglite could help us out here with clearly different names for the different AA models. Anyway, this model: has a hole in the tail for a string, has 4 modes (high, low, blink, SOS), does not have a spare bulb in the tail. It's more expensive than the incandescent AA, but cheaper than the "pro" AA. 5Great Power, Very Useful! One minor Complaint I think these LED lights are great. They provide exceptional light, as compared to standard bulbs. I can light up things nearly all the way across an acre of land, and can totally flood closer areas with bright light. It is amazing that such lighting power comes out of such a small unit. I can't imagine needing the larger size for general use around a house or modest-sized property. Also, the light is very white, not yellow like traditional bulbs. To me, the whiteness of these LED bulbs is much more appealing, and is easier on the eyes.Mine has been lightly used, so I do not know how well the bulb will peform once it begins to burn out (if it does). But, I will gladly replace the bulb or buy another one of these lights if that ever becomes a problem. They work that well. The metal housing is tough as nails, and it's small enough to go anywhere. The only complaint I have is the different light setting that are activated by turning the light on/off repeatedly. For example, if you turn the light on, then off, and back on quickly, it goes to a dimmer setting. Do it again, and it goes to a flashing setting. This can be annoying when you just want some light quickly, but accidentally twist the top when trying to use the unit.Other than that, I love this LED flashlight, and strongly prefer it over normal bulbed lights of similar size. 4Excellent Well, here I am wring a review of a flashlight, giving you the idea that I have too much free time on my hands.But. This is a great flashlight. Not too big and not too little, although I was a little bit surprised about how big it was (they were) when I got it in the mail. But no free lunch. You want a bright light, which this is, in a fairly small package that you can carry around, then you need the bigger size for the batteries. It is VERY bright and in the dark if you flash it in the distance it works just like a big, powerful flashlight. Great. And about carrying it, fit comes with a very niche case for the belt. I live in Thailand and feed and help dogs in the night so people don't pay me too much attention and so I can hug the dogs. I put the flashlight in my mouth and use my two hands to help the dogs, for example checking for ticks in their ears. It is so bright. Speaking of that, I had to HUNT on the Internet for how to adjust the brightness. Here it is. Twist it open once for super bright, twist it closed and then open again quickly for not so bright (the dogs like this one better), and do it again and again for two other modes, SOS and flash on and off I think it is, but I never use them.If you would like to help us with the dogs, please visit DogAidThailand on Facebook. Sorry about asking for help, but we sure could use it. Enjoy this flashlight. I have a red and a black one (I put tape on the end--not the end end but toward the end of the flashlight where you put the batteries in) so it does not hurt my mouth)and I am going to try to get the blue one the next time someone flies to Thailand. 5Perfect Mini Mag UPDATE NEW COMMENTS:When I don't sleep well, I have a short temper. I didn't sleep well, last night. So, when my LED Minimag didn't stay on, this morning; I lost my temper and slammed the flashlight against a desk, hard enough to dent the edge of the desk and scare my Lab out of a perfectly good squirrel dream. I decided to strip the flashlight for parts, and in the process I discovered that the battery compartment "cap" (on the butt end) was not tight. After tightening that cap, the flashlight worked like new. Here are two new comments about this product:1. Make sure the end cap is screwed on tightly (but you already knew that).2. Don't whack the flashlight against expensive furniture (it's bad for the furniture and scares dogs).Maglite, I apologize for doubting the durability of this little flashight; and I take back the nasty things I said when I thought mine had failed. This thing is TOUGH (just not idiot-proof)!ORIGINAL REVIEW:Love the gray color, size and light weight. I think this 2 cell puts out as bright a light as my 3 cell. I presume the batteries in the 3 cell might last a little longer, but it is an awkward size to carry on my belt. Anyway, this little 2 cell LED model is great!I don't remember the Amazon description saying anything about a selector "switch" that allows you to choose full power beam, reduced (battery saving) beam, steady flashing light, or a flashing SOS (3 shorts, 3 longs, 3 shorts). When I read that on the packaging, I couldn't find a "switch". Just by accident, I found that by turning the light off and back on changes the setting. The reduced beam is plenty bright for most needs and is supposed to extend the battery life significantly. I presume all these 2 cell LED Mini Mags have that feature, but maybe it was just mine. If they all DO have that feature, Amazon should surely say so, because it is a great selling point.I see some reviewers try to compare Maglites to other brands; but some of the other brands they mention cost triple what I paid for this little Mini Mag gem. In this price range, I don't think you can beat it. Buy several, because they make welcome gifts (just ask my daughter, ha). 5Nice, but could be nicer These flashlights seem to be well made and work nicely, but it would be much more convenient to have a button to turn it on/off-high/low instead of the twist action (like their larger flashlights). The two blinky modes are just froth and add unneeded complexity. Also, the round shape makes the light prone to rolling off a table. A hexagonal or octagonal shape would be better. It is VERY welcome to have an American made product. Most of the Chinese-manufactured flashlights seem to fail after only a few months of use. (Don't get me started on China's human rights abuses.) However, it is sad to see those leak-prone DuraCell batteries included with the flashlight. 4Good general purpose flashlight. Puchased 4 of these to use as a secondary light source for each of our mountain bikes. 3 of them are grey and 1 in camo. Mounted them onto the handle bars with the Fenix ALB-10 bike mounts. Replaced the plastic lens in each with glass versions at a cost of about $5 each. Also purchased the Maglite AA accessory kit for each (~$5) which included a lanyard, pocket clip, and an anti-roll lens holder with colored inserts. These are not the brightest lights available in this price range but for function and reliability these are hard to match. Believe at the time of purchase they were rated at 77 lumens which is less than the current generation (97 lumens). Primarily use them in blink mode to attract attention of other drivers/riders but also serve as a primary back-up. I use another flashlight for main lighting source. The focus works well but usually dont need it as we just twist the head enough to turn the light on. Accessing the blink mode requires turning the head on/off 3 times. As a bike light, these have been constantly exposed to shaking, impacts, and the elements for nearly 4 years. The only complaint being that I have needed to clean the contacts and expand the spring a couple of times. The most obvious damage to the finish is at the lanyard hole due to the metal ring used to connect the lanyard. A lanyard is required so we don't lose the light on a trail. The lights perform better with higher voltage batteries. As a result, primary lithiums are the best choice (1.7V) over alkalines (1.5V) and even the best NIMH rechargeables (~1.2V). For our application (blink mode), we use regular Eneloops.Overall, I highly recommend this light. Performs well and is rock-solid dependable. Most of the complaints about Maglites over the years have been failure due to leaking batteries. This is not the fault of the light but the fault of cheap batteries and neglectful owners. No flashlight, or any electronics for that matter, should be stored with alkaline batteries unless the tailcap is loosened/removed. Even then, the batteries should be changed annually at least. If used as an emergency light in a car or nightstand, would definitely recommend the Energizer lithiums.Purchased Summer 2014 from Amazon for $16.13 (grey versions) and $20.94 (camo). Also purchased a Pro version the same year which is still going strong too.All of them Made in the USA. 5Do you realy need a 100 dollar flash light? This LED mag light is very bright and long lasting. It uses standard batteries and is water proof as well as durable. I keep wanting one of the mega bright 100 dollar flash lights but I got this one first and it was the right choice for my bug-out-bag... I have a solar charger and AA batteries to go with it. I think the risk of using harder to find batteries is too great of a risk. I also can not imagine a scenario where the added brightness is a true advantage. The luminous intensity is inversely exponential, so a light that is 50% brighter does not give much better resolution at a distance but is more blinding up close. If you want a light for stunning a person than maybe the 100 light is better. That said, this light is intimidating enough when turned on someone's face, just saying there is a purpose and a place for the brighter light. 5Intense and Affordable This is the sweet spot of flashlights, unless you go for the more compact Inova X1DM-HB Dual High/Low Mode LED Flashlight - 1 AA Battery.PROs:* Throws a concentrated beam* Uses AA batteries -- alkaline or rechargeable (see Note 1)* Excellent specifications, fully disclosed (see Note 2)* Good value if you wait for low tide (under 15 buckss)* 4 Modes (bright, low, blink, SOS)* 18 hours (or more) from a set of batteries- Hole for tether or strapCONs:- Wish it had a glass (scratch resistant) lens- Warranty does not cover LED burnout or LED module failure.- The twist-on, twist-off, adjust-focus-every-time design is not ideal.- - - Pricing - - -Prices jump around, and vary by color. Low tide is around 15. There's an "Online Price Alert" that will email you whenever this or any amazon product dips below your target price. Google it. It's nicely done.- - - Notes - - -Note 1: Stick with AA batteries for all your devices. Best deal on rechargeables, and only one size to stock up on. Borrow from other devices in a pinch. I never go AAA...they're 2-1/2 times as expensive per amp-hour of output, and in flashlights they're also less space-efficient (per amp-hour of output).Note 2: 69 Lumens (light output) - 2547 Candela (light intensity) - 18/31 hour battery life (high/low mode) 5
