Customer Reviews

Great Camera and the GPS is a disappointmentThe camera is GREAT!! There is about a 1.5 second delay when you put the car in reverse and the camera comes on. Very crisp and detailed picture. It more than meets my expectations. The GPS on the other hand takes 5 or 6 minutes to find the satellites and the maps are very antiquated. I thought there was something wrong with the GPS, because I was not getting any speed limits in my area. I called Magellan and complained that I thought it was broken because the speed limits did not show up anywhere and they asked me to watch it for a few more days and if I was still not happy they would send me a new GPS. I then took a trip to a town about 45 miles away and when I got on the expressway, the speed limit showed up. It only shows up on very MAJOR thoroughfares. I live in a small town and I had the speed limits on all my previous GARMIN GPS's. I guess Magellan just doesn't have it together like GARMIN.3Magellan GPS with cameraUnit works well. Had to adjust to operating it (1st non-Garmin GPS) but it works well. Backup camera was easy to install and works well. Installing the factory backup camera system would have cost close to $1000 in parts & been much more difficult, very pleased with the Magellan, especially for the money.5Disappointed in numerous waysAfter charging the device I attempted update the map via USB connection to my laptop. After loading the software and 30 minutes of connection issues I found the update process very unreliable and questionable. There is no published data online to confirm the map and software version are the latest. Contacting customer support is extremely poor. Overall the online experience seems about 15 years outdated. Traffic Alerts appear to require a separate purchase of a "premium package" that does show up in update website. "Lifetime" map updates is only good for 3 years!! Obviously this device life expectation is just 3 years. Very slow to boot and acquire satellites. No Bluetooth or Wifi for live traffic condition monitoring. Many of these functionality problems appear to be due to poor execution at the company level and make all Magellan products of questionable quality1Nice GPS with back up CAMGreat gps with a back up cam, works great!5Acquiring Satellites Very PoorThe overall functions of this unit are very good. I purchased this as a package with the back up camera. This feature is very good, but the GPS unit takes forever to acquire satellites. On day three, it took over 2!/2 hours and 150 miles to acquire and lock on to satellites before the unit knew where I was. Tried everything from shutting the unit off, resetting the unit, stopping for 1/2 hour so I wasn't moving. Magellan needs to improve on the reception. Otherwise, when it works, it is a nice unit with many useful features. Don't think I would recommend this to anyone! Magellan has sent me another unit, (at first they wanted to send a refurbished unit but I refused that offer, mine was new and only a week old.) Waiting on the new one, hopefully they got the reception problem fixed on that one. We will only see when it gets here.Second unit arrived. Same problem with new unit, it will not acquire satellites. If serial numbers are sequential, the new unit was much older than the original one I bought. Updated the software (it was 2 rev's behind), maps, and it still took over an hour to acquire satellites. Contacted Customer Service and was told that since it was over 15 days since receiving the new unit, they would replace it with a refurbished unit only. Never again will I buy a Magellan GPS, it's back the trusty Garmin for me!! A $200 mistake that I will not make again.3Worst GPS I've ever experiencedI was excited about a GPS with an integrated backup camera (I tow a boat with a Tahoe). The backup camera installed in about 15 minutes and the quality was (just) OK in daylight. I did not find a second or two lag time to be a problem.Now... as a navigation unit... that's another story. I have used a number of automotive GPSs and marine GPS chartplotters with SONAR. The user interface on the 5255 was fine - I actually like the address lookup and prompting compared to Garmin's approach. That's about all I can say positive about the GPS functions. The unit is extremely slow to boot up and never took less than three minutes to acquire satellites - often it was ten to fifteen minutes and on more than one occasion the unit never did acquire satellites. (This was mounted on the dashboard under the rather large windshield of the Tahoe with no tall buildings or obscuring trees around.)One of the few times it did find satellites, the GPS wanted to take us about ten miles out of the way to get home from our local Wal-Mart. In addition, the unit would accept my street address (in a well-established neighborhood), but there was apparently no street in front of my house. Leaving the house, the instructions would begin with, "Proceed to [my street name] and continue to [the next corner]." The "dashboard" instructions were confusing. For example, if there was a turn in our route five miles ahead, the indicator would show a straight-ahead arrow and 3 miles rather than the turn arrow and five miles. I returned the unit and purchased a Garmin of the same size with the same feature set (minus the backup camera). The Garmin boots in only a few seconds, acquires satellites almost instantly, and makes sense with routing and turn instructions, etc. In fact, the Garmin acquired satellites with four bars' strength sitting in my living room! There is even a street in front of my house on the Garmin maps. My wife can help me back up to the boat...1Good combo GPS & backup cameraI had been loking for a combo unit like this for sometime and this one fits the bill. While I prefer a Garmin GPS to a Magellan unit, the convenience of GPS&back-up camera in one unit made the sale. This is installed on a Dodge Dakota Crew cab. Instalation was straighforward, hard wired into the reverse lights of the truck. Reception from the wireless transmitter is perfect and provides a good picture of what is behind the truck.4I am not real happy as yet.Thd screen is a bit small for a backup camera and the brightness is very poor. I have not hade chance to hear the voice or try the gps location finder yet. I have contacted the seller about this with no satisfaction so far.2
