    Credible Entry into the Diffuser MarketThis unit attaches firmly to the flash (YN 560 III, in this case) and shoots 20% of light forward, with 80% bouncing upward to illuminate background and nearby objects.I've mounted it on an L-bracket off to one side. I can control the angle and shoot in either portrait or landscape modes with reasonable ease. The results with this setup, again for event photography, are very promising. Shadows reduced, backgrounds visible (bokeh more interesting when the background isn't pitch black), and soft, diffused light.A bugaboo for me is the dark shadow that appears behind the subject when using flash mounted on the camera. I just want to get the heck rid of this, if possible, and this device goes a long way toward that aim. Using the built-in flash on the camera, even at 1/32 power, still created some shadows, so I am also ordering a Yongnuo RF-603 N3 2.4GHz Wireless Flash Trigger/Wireless Shutter Release Transceiver Kit for Nikon D90/D3100/D5000/D7000. If you shoot Canon, make sure you get the correct trigger for Canon as the hot shoe contacts differ between Nikon and Canon. Hopefully, this will take care of the remaining shadow problem.The unit folds flat, comes with colored gels for those who employ such things, and attaches firmly to the flash. Again, I've experimented with it mounted horizontally on an L-bracket, shooting upwards, with the barn doors open towards the subject. I shot some shots with this, some with a Fotodiox Flash Diffuser Dome for Canon 580EX, 580EXII, 580 EX II, Flash Speedlight, and some with a CowboyStudio 8-Inch Portable Quick Setup Speedlite Octagon Diffuser Softbox for Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic Speedlite Flashes. The Lumiquest was consistently my favorite, with the Cowboy studios flash diffuser my second choice.The Cowboy studios diffuser would be great for shooting with more than one flash. If you are stuck with one unit only, as often is the case at fundraiser events, the Lumiquest would be the way to go, IMHO.Downsides? I knew you would ask. Probably the size and relative awkwardness compared with shooting a naked flash, or one equipped with the Fotodiox diffuser, is the biggest drawback. But, to it's credit, the unit attaches quite snugly to the flash and seems unlikely to come off.The other downside, I'm certain you'll agree, is the price. I bought mine on sale ($35) and don't think I'd have sprung for it at more than $50. However, what you're paying for here is not the materials or manufacturing, but the thinking that went into producing this product. It's well thought out and constructed to do the job without being overly heavy or unnecessarily cumbersome. Clever engineering that works.The Lumiquest LQ-134 also comes with a nice faux-leather carrying case. Folded flat, it fits easily even into a crowded camera bag.Now for your last question: No, I have no professional affiliation with the company that made this nor the vendor who sells it. I'm just a regular old photographer-guy who occasionally needs to shoot events.Knocked one star off for the price.
