Customer Reviews

Total Garbage -Don't BuyInternet connection drops intermittently. Numerous tech support calls are useless. Amazon and seller won't approve a return after 30 days. Total nightmare. So, I bought an alternative solution. It works like a dream so clearly it is this product.1Totally worth it!This thing kicks butt! It s faster and more responsive than a wired connection to my tv. I don t know how that s even possible, and I don t even care anymore. I yanked the cat 6 cable out of the tv. I ve been through so many routers like Apple AirPort Extreme, Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3600 tri band, nothing even comes close. I have all sorts of home automation connected including wink II, 4 TVs, Fire tv, Netflix, 2 Sonos systems with subwoofers, 4 Alexas, WiFi lights and switches galore, macbooks, imacs, PCs, all working perfectly. Setup was easy. I even put one in my pool pump shed so we d have great WiFi by the pool finally. Also. WiFi assist and FaceTime on the iPhones finally works in the basement. And the kids stopped whining about the WiFi. That alone is worth it.5Whole house Wi fiThis works great5Excellent Router! This is a very good router! It replaces a Linksys WRT1900acs router. I have nearly 20 devices connected. The old router could not keep up. The Linksys Velop mesh router is a great upgrade. Once I set up the three nodes, the router worked as advertised. If you need full WiFi coverage at your house and have multiple devices, this router is a very good candidate to fulfill your needs.5Easy to set up. Good, strong signal. We recently moved from a 1 bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house. Needless to say, our old wifi modem/router wasn't able to reach the upper and back parts of the house. We saw a couple good reviews from tech magazines that recommended this system.Setup was a breeze. Plugged in the first node and hard wire it to the modem. I then used the Linksys app to connect to the modem and start broadcasting a new wifi network. Once the first one was set up, the other two were relatively easy to set up as well. Overall, it took about an hour to set up all three.Over the last few weeks, the network has been really good and there haven't been any streaming quality issues. We're able to stream in 4k on our bedroom TV no problem. The price is obviously high but I got a good system that was easy to set up and works really well.5STABLE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE CASUAL USERLinksys AC6600, 3-Pack Model WHW0303This item is a 3-band mesh system, not to be confused with the AC3900, 2-band system, Model WHW0103 which looks similar, but has fewer features. The two primary bands run on 5GHz, with the 3rd, backhaul band, on 2.4GHz. Theoretically, that means if a connected device is limited to 2.4GHz (e.g. tp-link Smart Wi-Fi Plug), the device may not work. However, my 2.4GHz devices work well with the Velop. The use of three Velop nodes is probably overkill considering the size of my home, but a tp-link Smart Plug in the master bedroom (furthest point from my previous Linksys EA4500 router) often lost its connection - annoying when asking Alexa to play music on the Amazon Dot or turn a light on/off. Reviewers of my next choice of more powerful routers, the Linksys EA9500 tri-band, noted problems with dropping connections.Setup of the Velop must be done using the Velop app on a smartphone.Being male, a retired engineering type, and having experience in IT support, I usually ignore reading directions except as a last resort. Without instructions, completing the primary (parent) node setup was simple. Connecting the next two nodes was also uneventful, other than a great deal of time was used by the setup process to find/configure the secondary (child) nodes. As other reviewers noted, configuring all three devices in the same room may have speeded things up I didn t do that. The second and subsequent nodes should initially be added in wireless mode, not hard-wired. Hard-wiring can be done later.Performance comparisons of my old EA4500 and Velop AC6600 were significant.GOOD1. No dropped connections of any of the 25 devices connected to the Velop (that I'm aware of).2. Network signal strength is stronger and more consistently even throughout my home, including an increased coverage area outdoors - porch, patio, yard, etc. I use Ekahau Heatmapper to show signal strength, channels used, SSID, MAC address, & security settings of neighboring and my network(s). With the EA4500, Heatmapper showed red areas in my home indicating no coverage. The Velop s coverage is all green.3. My neighbor's networks are no longer stronger than mine due to interference on 2.4GHz. Previously, to reduce connection drops, I had to go into the router settings to select specific channels that were less-used by other networks. No more - the Velop automates that as needed.4. While control of the router (settings, passwords, etc) is designed to be done via the smartphone app. I've become comfortable using a browser connection to accomplish those things. Entering 192.168.1.1 into my browser's address bar opens a Linksys page which prompts me to use the Linksys phone app. A provided link on that page, however, opens the login screen.5. Wi-Fi Security options have been simplified. Choices are WPA2 Personal (default) and WPA2/WPA Mixed Personal.6. Speed is consistently faster. I'm paying for 75 Mbps download, which was usually obtained with the EA4500 (10.2 Mbps upload). Velop is giving me 94 Mbps down & 11.1 Mbps up.7. There is a 3-year warranty for both hardware AND tech support which includes a dedicated support phone number. No more being transferred multiple times to get help. The longer, tech-support warranty period relieves an uncomfortable annoyance I've had with Linksys support multiple times in the past when I've asked for a simple answer to a question and been told 'your router is out of the warranty period, but for $35, we'll help you resolve your problem'. I suspect the same situation applies to other router manufacturers, but unless extensive help or remote access is required to deal with a problem, a simple answer should be provided without charge. Linksys' 'help' policy caused me to closely consider Asus and others before opting for the Velop - and then only because of familiarity with the on-line interface.8. I'm pleased with Velop chat & phone Support. Discovery chat sessions & phone calls have been informative with agents often providing additional information or reference links to point me in a productive direction. The reps were responsive, courteous, professional and tactful while explaining things to me. I never felt overwhelmingly ignorant during conversations.9. To help prevent router/network hacking, changing the router password from admin is required during setup.NOT SO GOOD1. The Velop nodes have two ethernet ports in each device. I have security cameras, Network Video Recorder, ISP connection and Chamberlain garage-door (MyQ) hub that need to connect to the router. While a bridged connection could have been made between the EA4500 and Velop (to use the EA4500's four ports), to keep things relatively simple, I opted to use a Linksys SE3008, 8-port switch, which will provide extra capacity when I hard-wire the Velop parent node to a child node and add other future connections.2. The Velop has VPN Passthrough capability, not built-in VPN. Connected devices which can be configured with VPN Passthrough are safe - e.g. computers - but with today's IOT (Internet of Things), some devices - e.g. Nest thermostat - which are not VPN configurable, could potentially allow a network to be hacked. VPN Passthrough includes IPSec, PPTP, & L2TP. After reading many reviews that pointed out VPN typically slows down internet connections by 50% or more, I opted to be satisfied with Passthrough for now.3. The Alexa app for Velop has good points and bad. Good: You can ask Alexa to turn your guest network on/off. Bad: You can also ask Alexa to give you the primary network password, which will be provided - to anyone who asks for it, friend or foe. A challenge needs to be in place, beforehand to confirm the person asking for it is authorized to have it. I've opted to not use the app.4. If you want a multiple-node setup, you cannot mix/match colors (black/white). I had preferred a black node to go with the other black hardware where the parent node is located, and white in the kitchen and master bedroom. Mixing colors is possible if you buy nodes separately instead of in a set. That costs a lot more. This apparent marketing ploy should eventually end as competition heats up.5. A glitch in my Linksys account(?) prevented me from using a new SSID/password for my Velop network - devices couldn't connect. There seemed to be a 'hook' connecting the previous EA4500 and Velop. After spending a little time with Velop Support, I reset the Velop and entered the SSID & password used with the EA4500. That worked. Linksys support said they would contact me after the problem was identified/resolved. Four weeks later, I've heard nothing.6. The Velop should not be described as simply pricey - it's simply expensive.SUMMARY- The three-node Velop has eliminated connection-dropping problems and is faster than my previous router.- Setup was simple once I used my previous router's credentials to connect devices to the Velop.- Velop automates some functions that were previously done manually via the router interface (e.g. selecting channels). This may be considered a mixed-blessing. Non-techies will appreciate it, but others may prefer to be in absolute control of all facets of the router.- The number of Wi-Fi security options have been reduced.- The three-year hardware/support warranty is an improvement - that Velop buyers are paying for.- Two Ethernet (LAN) ports on each node aren t enough and require additional hardware (e.g. multi-port switch) to connect multiple, additional devices, particularly on the parent node.- Considering product cost, built-in VPN and local server capabilities should be included.- Alexa for Velop is a security risk.- The phone app is a nice convenience factor for controlling the router, compared to using the on-line interface.Considering the question would I buy it again? : I bought Velop (directly from Linksys) because they had a sale going on which reduced the price to about 85% of Amazon's. The three-year warranty was the final deal-making consideration for me. Paying MSRP would have been out of the question. Even Amazon s lower price placed the Velop beyond my perceived worth.4Amazing speeds and coverageGreat product. Easy install. bumped our speed to 300MBS and life is really nice5Way better than Xfinity Xfi podsI spent most of the day installing it as the firmware was old and instructions on the phone did not tell you to create a new wifi name and to keep the first Node connected to modem/router thru ethernet cables. I was thinking it was like the Xfinity Xfi pods that you use your existing wifi name and it is just extended. So I called the Linksys support and they remotely connected to my computer and installed the Nodes correctly. Once it was running, I loved the speed as my Xfinity Xfi gets me only 10Mbps with Gig speed internet. At least with my computer being at the end of the chain, I am getting over 350Mbps. What a huge difference compared to Xfi!! I spent so much money on the Xfi, but it is worthless! I can't believe Comcast is selling crap without full disclosure! I would have given it 5 stars due to higher internet speed, but I am opting with 4 stars due to their instructions was not very clear. Once the support representative got on the phone which I only waited 15 seconds for them to answer, he was able to fix my installation problem.4Works greatWorks great5Its a beast and provided by a trustworthy company far better than Google or Amazon. The wireless Internet in my rental only covered half my house. The Internet company wanted to get me to purchase a second wireless router and have two connections/fees for 55.00 a month. I will be here for 4 years. So I would have spent 55 x 48 = $2640 for an additional system to have full house coverage. The savings over the years will pay for the system multiple times over.5
