Customer Reviews

Gets the Job DoneI have a thinkpad 12.5 Lenovo Twist, for those of you whom are looking to expand the usability and viewable monitors with this notebook. I have been in Information Technology for close to 30 years now, so, maybe this review will hold a little more weight than most...The notebook is solid, so I thought this would be a good platform to expand on.Overall, the docking station works as prescribed. Setup was relatively simple. It was just about plug and play, however, you do need the included CD, which can be annoying considering the notebook doesn't have one, so an external had to be setup. I have two 23 inch higher end monitors connected to it with DVI cables going to the docking station. The USB 3 connection does keep up for the most part, however, you will see screen ghosting and flickering during some applications. Its not a show stopper, however, it can be distracting...another anomaly to mention, some other users have also reported as well, their will also be latency with keyboard and mouse usage. I am using a wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard with the transceiver plugged into the front of the docking station. It works, again, its a little quirky at times. And it is true, the notebook dies have to stay open in order for the docking station to stay awake and accessible.Other than that, the docking station is attractive in appearance, it definitely compliments at least this particular thinkpad notebook model. Hope this review was helpful.4Works great with Surface Pro and Lenovo X1 Carbon TouchI bought this with the knowledge that other people have had some issues getting it to work, but it is working great for me. My basic steps were: 1. Plug everything in 2. Install Lenovo's driver on my X1 (worked at this point, but with some lag) 3. Install the 0A33970 firmware update (fixed most lag) 4. Install Lenovo's USB 3.0 Host driver (no lag at all from this point on) 5. Install DisplayLink's driver over the Lenovo driverAnd then for the Surface Pro 6. Install DisplayLink's driver on the Surface Pro 7. Unplug my X1 Carbon and plug in my Surface ProAnd everything just worked. There is a little bit of lag with the Surface Pro, but after using it for a couple hours, it is barely noticeable.Right now, I have two 24" 1080p DVI monitors, USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB VoIP phone, Ethernet, and speakers plugged into the dock and everything fits together perfectly. I can move between the two computers with no issue, and the swap only takes about 10 seconds to finish. For those who have tried this combo and had issues, you may want to redownload all the new drivers and firmware and give it another shot.**Update**Been using this daily for a couple months now and I have to say that I am still quite happy with how well this works. I work the kind of job where I switch between the dock at my desk and just the laptop at meetings at least 5 times a day, and the whole setup swaps solidly every time.5Decent Solution for the Carbon x1This product was mostly straight forward and easy to use on my Lenovo Carbon x1 Touch. It takes up less space than a dock, but that's the only pro versus the traditional station. My biggest complaints are:Doesn't come with many additional USB ports and given the Carbon has few to start out with, you will end up having to buy a USB hub.If you use this with multiple screens you will find that they aren't level. I have tried multiple monitor sets (always the same monitor) and this problem always persists. I have had multiple individuals from IT support try to unsuccessfully fix this.If you unplug the dock while leaving a program up on the 2nd screen in a 2 monitor setup, you will not be able to view that program on your laptop without reconnecting to the doc and moving the program to the 1st screen. I'm not sure if this is a Lenovo Carbon issue or a problem with the doc, but I've never experienced this before on a Lenovo laptop with a standard doc.In summary, this product functions well enough that it's usable. However, if a standard doc ever becomes available for the Carbon x1, I will replace this in a heartbeat.3Works great with Yoga 2, 11". Not so great with Yoga 3, 11"Works well with some computers, not so well with others. Works well with Lenovo Yoga 2, 11". Does not work well with Yoga 3, 11". I have dual external monitors, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse and speakers connected. On the Yoga 3, it will almost always connect / disconnect every few seconds when I first connect the USB 3.0 cable. Usually, if I unplug and re-plug the USB 3.0 cable a few times, it eventually stays on for a while, but drops out randomly. Also, never got Ethernet to work on the Yoga 3. I installed the latest drivers, but still no-go. I've tried connecting noting but a monitor and still same issue.Update: Stopped working so well on the Yoga 2. There are a lot of devices this thing doesn't like.2Flakey deviceLot's of promise for this guy. But it constantly disconnects and re-connects to the X1-Carbon touch. This cycle costs about 20 seconds of productivity loss each time, where the computer, mouse, display, network are dead. This happens about every 5 minutes.UPDATE Sept 2014:Newer drivers brought stability and happiness to my office for about 5 months. Both 1980X1200 24" monitors AND the X1 Carbon's display all working. 3 screens in Windows 8.0 extended mode. Then a new driver for the docking station dropped me to only one external monitor. No backpedaling the driver would bring it back.So I connected the second monitor to the X1's mini-display port connector, and now I have 3 things to plug in each time I "dock": Power, USB3 and mini-DP cable.Drivers are the bane of this device, as many have noted.2Function is hit or miss. Works great when you get a good oneHad issues and amazon took care of them immediately with a return and refund so I could order another. A+ as usual for Amazon. That said, I suggest you order an item either shipped/sold by Amazon or at least fulfilled by Amazon in case it doesn t work. The first in me I ordered was defective but the second worked fine (ordered from fivestarexperience with great results!). Ordered a new open box Lenovo thinkpad docking station and had to return it. Ordered another one used that was stated to be in excellent working condition and was very satisfied. The new one was essentially DOA: when plugged in and connected the connected monitors and keyboard/mouse constantly lost connection. I would have assumed a new driver was needed or the usb cable was faulty except that I have an identical device I use for work with the same laptop and was able to verify all cables and driver on that working component. If you ve installed the driver executable and have tested your monitor cable(s) and still have intermittent connectivity I suggest you return the item. When the docking station is working properly, install/setup is very straightforward and essentially plug and play.5Works OK but mine blew out after 2 years.I have two of these one in my home office and one in my work office. The home office device was about 2 years old and started generating a "device error" every 60 seconds, with the computer screens blinking on and off and the computer "rediscovering" the device. I replaced the USB docking station and the new one is fine again. So in my cases, one of these devices had about a two year life. I did leave it plugged in all the time for two years, I didn't methodically turn it off every night. This drives two DVI port monitors, and my home monitors are VGA/DVI and not HDMI, so this is a good fit for me. (If I did have HDMI monitors, you can get DVI-to-HDMI cables pretty easily.) Some newer generic docking stations have mostly HDMI outputs. I kind of like having a docking station but in a pinch, I have learned that my 2016 Lenovo X1 laptop will drive two monitors pretty well, one off the HDMI port and one off the mini DVI port. If needed that can be supplemented by a $15 USB hub for extras like a scanner. Still, I voted with my wallet and replaced the Docking Hub. I've also used a very simple USB based monitor port box (J5Create JUA311) with no video speed problem for ordinary office software. The Lenovo USB 3 Docking Station can be a little glitchy. Sometimes my laptop goes to sleep and when it wakes up, the monitors won't turn on until there is a cold reboot.3i read reviews so i knew i had to get the latest and greatest drivers right awayUsing this with my Yoga 1 and 2 24in Dell monitors that gives me a 3 screen setup (2 ext monitors + the laptop). Also running Windows 8, not 10.After the first time connecting everything together, i read reviews so i knew i had to get the latest and greatest drivers right away. I'm in the IT field so my tech abilities is way above avg, but i would say, any teenager probably could have figure this out and gotten it to work. If you can install a printer on a Win7 or older machine, you shouldnt have a problem connecting this up.As for the actual device and its functionality, so far it has been working like a champ. Been using this for about 7-8 months now and it probably gave me a problem once, which might have also been caused by Windows updates. A reboot corrected my problem.Like mentioned above, i'm running 2 EXT monitors off the dock, ethernet LAN connection, and a few usb devices (mouse dongle, hard drive, usb drive). The fact i just need to plug 1 USB cable from the dock to my laptop every morning instead of each device is where this bad boy shines. No, this is not a true docking station, but i'd prefer unplugging 1 usb cable instead of consistently pressing down on some latch or manual unhinge mechanism. All in all, this thing is GREAT and looks very sleek (similiar to external hard drive). I'm about to buy another one for my home as I only run 1 in my office.5Happy after I found a way to make it work with Win 8.1I purchased this for a new hybrid laptop that shipped with Win 8.0. I just did the upgrade to windows 8.1 and poof - this product is useless! Neither the external video nor the ethernet adapter would work. I went to the Lenovo support site and searched for the model 0A33970, and couldn't find ANY drivers to download, and the chat operator couldn't do any better. This OS has been out for months now. Lenovo, is this the best we can expect from you?Update: I did find drivers on the DisplayLink website that brought the external monitors back in action, but still not Ethernet. Pity that Lenovo sells this product and I have to go somewhere else to find drivers for even partial function.Update again: Found a "cleaner" program on the DisplayLink website that completely removes corrupted files from the old installation, paving the way for clean install of new drivers. All network capability restored. Hey Lenovo - it would be nice if you put this on your own website!5My home dockI bought this to use as my home dock. I had a previous dock that only worked with one type of laptop. This one is great in that my wife and I can both use it when we need to dock and use the peripherals and big screen. I have also docked my Windows tablet using a USB Go adapter. Worked great. Some have complained about the drivers, but I have had no real problems. I am pushing two monitors (DVI and HDMI) with no real lag or tearing. Do make sure you are using the most up to date drivers. My only complaint is with my external keyboard and mouse. If I put the proprietary dongle for the keyboard/mouse combo in the USB slots on the dock, after about 5 minutes the mouse goes crazy with lots of lag. I have to use it in the laptop USB slot. It is not a big deal, since everything else works with the dock, but I wish it did work like it should. If you have USB 3.0 compliant laptop, then this is for you!5
