Customer Reviews

Diamonds not evenly distributed over the surface The idea of 40 sq inches of a diamond surface flat to a tight tolerance is a great one. However I was surprised to see one side more crowded with diamonds than the other side (see the picture). First I said to myself that it may just be a matter of appearance and wouldn't affect the performance. However having used it quite a number of times and seeing the scratch pattern this plate produced, I can now be certain that this is not just appearance. This plate costs over $200 mark, and carries a certificate of flatness with a wet signature - meaning that a real person looked at the surface before leaving the factory. Maybe I happen to receive a defective product but it is frustrating enough and I also don't appreciate the extra work to return a product. This is definitely going back. 1Great results and a big time saver. Others mentioned an uneven distribution of abrasive but mine is uniform across the entire surface. I flattened my 10,000 stone and touched up my straight razor as a test.Best shave I've ever had. It was a revelation. 5I'll keep it, but would not have bought it if knew what i know now. The problem with this product is the price for what it ultimately offers. First of all, let me say that i have many different types of sharpening stones, been involved with synthetic and natural water/oil stones for many years. What this product will do is flatten your water stones; but so will the 8x3 DMT plate at 1/3rd the price. The main reason why i bought this plate is because it is advertised to be within 1/10,000th of an inch flatness; which turnes out to be a pointless feature of this plate. The diamond abrasive is rough enough to cut synthetic water stones quickly and it is aggressive enough to flatten my granite reference plate. However the finish that is left by this plate is far far too rough to even begin talking about 1/10,000th flatness. What i am trying to say is: if you have money to burn and if all you are flattening are water stones, buy it. Otherwise, spend $50 for a 6"x18" granite reference plate and another $60 for XXC DMT plate, to flatten reference plate when time comes. A 1/10,000 flatness is pointless with abrasives of this grit. 2One time use and it's worn out??? DMT DIA-FLAT Lapping PlateI received this DMT DIA_FLAT plate today and tried lapping a fairly new Norton aluminum oxide stone (240 grit) with it under running water per the instructions. It took a long time to clean up the large faces of the stone using the entire surface of the plate. I noticed that the center of the plate didn't "cut" as well as around the outer edges. When I was finished, I rinsed off the DMT plate (again under running water) and could feel that the center areas of the plate were much smoother than when I started. After it was dried off I inspected the surface of the plate with a USB microscope and found a significant number of diamond pieces had been dislodged and washed away from the substrate. (Nickel plating over steel?) The ends of the plate still have a good amount of diamond remaining but the center areas have a lot of craters where diamonds USED to be. For over $200 with sales tax, this tool should be able to hold up to a LOT more than a single use!!!Will be returning this - pronto. 1Must Have Despite Price Extremely pricey, but worth every penny! It not only flattens my water stones, which have an amazing propensity to dish out after every use, but it flattened my Arkansas stones with no problems and fast. 5Excellent product. It is a hobby of mine to keep my nerves are very sharp using Japanese water stones. I had my eye on this thing for two years before I pulled the plug, and it was worth the wait! I can't recommend this enough if you sharpen with water stones. 5Amazing! I flattened my kitchen oil-stone, after 15 years of use, and it was not only flat but honing knifes became way faster! So I had to freshen all of my knives and my quilting shears. Then I did my Norton 4 k/8 k and Shapton 12 k water stones and my razors were very happy too! 5A fast and easy way to flatten waterstones I bought the DMT DIA-FLAT Lapping Plate because I was tired of using sandpaper to flatten my waterstones. While sandpaper worked fine, I just wanted a faster and more efficient way to flatten my stones. I did consider a few other diamond lapping plates but settled on this one, even though this one was the most expensive, because i liked the size and aggressiveness advertised on this plate.I've only used this lapping plate a few times so far but I am very glad i bought it. Flattening stones isn't as much of a chore now and this thing gets them dead flat every time. It also motivates me to lap the stones during every sharpening session while with sandpaper I often didn't because it was a pain. It is a bit heavy as others have mentioned but that's really a nonissue for me. The only con that comes to mind is the price but you get what you pay for I suppose. 5Good Plate and Good Service The lapping plate I received had the cutting material unevenly distributed across the surface. I contacted DMT. They had me send some pictures of the plate and sent me a replacement that was perfect. It is nice the receive good customer service and have a company stand behind its product. 5Fast and effortless I had a Shapton #8000 ceramic stone and seriously gouged it by sharpening a M4 steel knife (most likely because I pushed down too hard). I was concerned that the stone was ruined but used this lapping plate with VERY LIGHT pressure to fix the Shapton stone. It worked great. I wonder if some of the reviews that stated diamond loss was occurring were because people pushed down very hard. Even if this were not the case, the plate looks new and light pressure gives a perfect reconditioning. The lapping plate is expensive, but it was a perfect fix and likely will be used for years to come. 5
