Customer Reviews

Shallow spot in the working surface, white stone instead of purple Ok, I received this stone today... The thing that first struck me was that the stone is a white color instead of being purple as shown in the images. I compared it with the Ultra fine stone (white stone in a yellow holder) that I received at the same time, and they feel pretty much the same.On closer inspection, the working surface has a recessed area about 2/3 of the way up the stone, where it's not flush with the rest of the surface. It's a pretty big defect for a super-fine polishing surface.I've contacted Lansky using their website, and will update this comment based on their response.Note that I've been using a Lansky sharpening system for about 25 years, and am a big fan. Don't let this negative review dissuade you from trying the Lansky system.Update: I contacted Lansky, and they sent me a replacement stone. The replacement stone has a flat working surface, which is a big improvement. Unfortunately, the edges were jagged. This isn't something that would affect the use of the stone, but it is unsightly. I used the diamond-fine stone to smooth the edges at a 45 degree angle, and got rid of the jagged edges.Note that the replacement again was a white stone, not the purple stone that's shown in the images and on the packaging.I used the new stone today, and it seems to have a more coarse finish than the ultra-fine white stone. This despite the sapphire stone being advertised as 2000 grit and the ultra-fine stone being advertised as 1000 grit. Oh well, either one works well for putting a final finish on the edge.Upgrading to 5 stars for Katherine in the Lansky customer service department standing behind their product. 5DO NOT BUY!! The glue they use to hold the stone and the plastic holder together is crap do not waste your money on the stone I was sharpening my knife and sure enough the stone fell and the blades edge got caught on the plastic holder and I sliced my dam Index finger! 1Great Hone, Bad Quality ControlThis works well as a near final finish. I am only giving it three stars because the stone was separated from its holder when it arrived. I glued it back together and it works great, but this isn't the first Lansky hone I've had this same problem with. Lansky's quality control and adhesive leaves a lot to be desired. So be prepared to either repair it upon receipt or return it under warranty.3It does work but the glue did failItem was received on time though like others the actual stone fell off the plastic part. Luckily for me a bit of contact cement holds it in tightly now. Its something that should not happen but it did and I did not want to return it. As for other users claiming it was not as sharp as S1000 stone, its because they still have a thin burr and wire edge which may be initially sharp, once it folds over it will no longer be sharp. This stone will remove the wire edge and polish better than the s1000 stone but its still not the end of it. You need to strop the knife if you want the smoothest edge, an edge enough to shave with. This is a worthwhile stone to get if you have the lansky system4Great addition to the Lanksy System! Wish I had bought it sooner.I chose a 5 star rating because I believe it deserves it. The Lansky system is my first venture into knife sharpening. I own the Diamond sharpening system and I added this because I wanted to get a finer edge. It does deliver that for sure! For the amount of money I paid and the sharpness I am now getting on my knives I consider this addition to my Lansky System priceless!Edit:I wanted to note that the the item I received is different than pictured. My item was not a blue handle with blue stone, it was a blue handle with a white stone. But the package did say "Polishing Stone" on it. I am not listing this as a problem but for others, like me, who are a little on edge about items not as pictured.Update on performance:I cannot tell you how much I love this little guy and what it does to finish off the edge on my blades!! I had a newer knife that was losing that factory sharpness, I mean I use it a lot at work and it was still very sharp but I really enjoy a really sharp knife. I put some oil on the stone and got to work. When I was finished I put it to the paper test, for those of you who don't know what that is that is when you hold a single piece of paper and slice downwards. If the knife is sharp it will slice through the piece of paper. The sharper the knife the less burrs you will see on the paper. It was a clean cut. Very clean.I've read a couple of reviews that say this does not work, I would implore anyone and everyone who is not getting an excellent finishing edge to check your sharpening angle against the original sharpening angle. Anything different will result in no results. This is a super fine stone, and it will not re-edge your blade. Well it will, if you stroke it for over 24 hours. 10-15 on a proper angle will deliver incredible results.Update 2: 2018-09-10Still use it. Cautious of its ability to provide accurate angles on one side of sharpening. Overall disappointed.4If you wanted the perfect finishing touches on a knife, look no further. It doesn't look like what's in the image, it's white, a ceramic white, which means it's the real deal. This sucker is smooth and I guarantee without any doubt it will take out scratches from previous strokes of a stone to bring a mirror edge that will have people take notice. I kid you not I had a customer ask me if I chrome plated the edge of my CPM M4, but it was just a few strokes of this cermaic. Get the S1000 and then get this S2000. I can never get Lansky system to sharpen anything but it sure gives a beautiful bezel and this polishes it off perfectly.5Inadequate glue jobThe stone itself is very good. Flat and uniform, very fine grit as advertised. I used it to provide a final polish after the "fine diamond" and the resulting edge easily shaved the hair off of the back of my hand. 3 star instead of 5 because the stone separated from the holder on the 4th use. No adhesive was left on the stone, and very little was on the plastic. I reattached the stone with epoxy, but upset that I had to do it within 2 months of ownership.3In the name of accelerating profitsI have no idea who Lansky is as a company. I bought their stuff 20 years ago, and it changed my outlook. Edged tools and knives I was previously throwing away, became better than new after sharpening with my Lansky set. I still use that set today. I needed something special to put an extra fine edge on my expensive Damascus cutlery. I bought this Sapphire Hone, to do it. Very fine grade stone. The stone fell out of the plastic carrier before I even got the package open. I glued it back with a good grade of modified Polysiloxane adhesive. I think anyone can buy good adhesives, and Lansky needs to do it. The theory of accelerating profits, says a company must always strive to make more money this business quarter than any previous quarter. A lot of fine companies became crap in pursuit of that principle. Sapphire is the high priced marketing name for aluminum oxide. Guess aluminum oxide doesn't sound as impressive.3You can't polish a knife with this!Much like the majority the hone I received was uneven. No biggie.. so I sent it back and when the replacement arrived it was defective also. Perhaps Amazon's stock is messed up due to improper storage of inventory? Nevertheless, I contacted Lansky directly and informed them of this situation and they are going to replace them under warranty. Score! Hopefully coming directly from Lansky the hones will be alright. Despite this.. 4 stars due to the QC issue.4Decent after fixingLike others have said, watch out. Mine came with a slightly concave stone. It's still usable and while it doesn't give me that nice polished appearance, it still produces a very sharp edge. I can at least shave hairs off my hand with the edge it produces. All the other stones I have in that kit are flat. Maybe I can fix it by progressively sanding it down?-- 7-1-2018 Update --I flattened the stone on a cheap Harbor Freight diamond hone from their 3 piece set with plenty of water. After about a while, I checked it with a small 3" square to make sure it was flat. After the initial flattening, I moved to water soaked 2000 grit sandpaper on a small sheet of glass. All in all, it took around an hour or so to get the stone back to what it was originally. The polishing the stone does now if far more uniform now that the stone isn't concave.-- Afterthought --I wonder how difficult it would be to make these using 1/2" aluminum extrusions and lapping film.4Great and Getting that Extra bit of SharpIt does help to polish and sharpen your knives beyond the stones in the regular and pro system. If you can use the Lanksy system and want to make your knives sharper then this is a must have.5What Hapopened to Lansky?Lansky should have named this stone the Super Craptastulastic Fail Rock Supreme. It's not flat. It is convex on the honing side, and concave on the side that is glued to the plastic guide. How do I know this, because the glue failed during the first use of the stone. The stone just fell off. At first I thought I was imagining things that my knife got less sharp after honing with this thing; checked that I was in the right slot on the guide and that the bar was true. Then I noticed that the hone's face is not flat. I have had a Lansky five-stone sharpening kit for years and never had a material/quality problem with any of the components. Bought this hoping that it would be a worthy addition to the kit. Now I'm left feeling like Ralphie after he decoded his first message from Little Orphan Annie.1
